I'm a St John volunteer from South Oz. I'm also a paramedic, registered nurse and a medical student. What, pray tell, do I 'wannabe' by being affiliated with this service?
It's ok though, I understood what you were really trying to say to the thousands who give up their free time to spend hours learning how to save lives and then give up hours more keeping people like yourself safe for free so you can enjoy youself. And my response on behalf of those people is, 'You're welcome matey!'
Ever heard of on call?? We have Nurses, doctors, PARAMEDICS within St John. Sure some of us are paramedic wanabes...but at least they are making a start doing VOLUNTEER work which makes them better paramedics when they do become one!! Learn to appreciate something people are giving for nothing! U'd understand if u had to do 12-16 hour shifts for 5 days straight. And guess what, these "paramedic wanabes" did hell of a job over the entire week and they def. saved many lives in that 5 days!!!
At least they had qualified people at this event. The Ambulance SErvice of NSW's response to this event was to have trainee paramedics with 2 weeks experience and Paramedic educators, most of which have not worked on road for a very long time. So much for the 'professional Ambulance Service'. For the record I do not and have never volunteer with St. John's.
change the title to "AT world youth day" :)
