I don't think mac gives out samples but I could be wrong. I have (made) "samples" of every full jar I own to carry in my kit.

it is free, but they tend to get upset if you only ask for a pigment sample and don't buy anything

But I'd gotten my samples when I wanted to buy the product and they didn't have any in stock [for example, melon pigment] and i REEEAAALLLY wanted it, so she gave me a little mac sample jar full of it because she felt bad that they still had it on display. There's quite a bit in there. And I've gotten samples of paints.
