Hmm... Just to point some things out.

Bi tai yang geng guang should be "Brighter than the Sun" and not "Hotter than the sun"

Dan si tie da would be more appropriate as "Courage wrought like iron / metal"

"Train" might be more appropriate in replacement for "Excercise"

Re xie might be more appropriate to be displayed as "Passionate" than "Hot-blooded" - but both applies

Still , it's a matter of opinion :3

Hao means good or great, Han really references the culturalization of the Huaxia people after the Han Dynasty took over the Qin Dynasty during the imperial eras and long before unified China of the modern era. So one would assume that it means "good or great Chinese". The origins of being a Han is prideful during these eras and stretches even until the last Qing Dynasty rule. So the 2 characters when combined, really means "good Han" and later, changes to the simplified expression as "hero".

Hao Han in the latter sense, expressively denotes an individual's heroic action(s), and thus glorifies that individual as the hero. No one in modern times would use Hao Han as a "good Han" anymore. In this film during the turbulent end times of Qing Dynasty with Western influences along with this modified military song, the undertone theme is for the Hans to unite and fight against the powers foreign invaders. So such actions would be deemed as heroic.

@ChenYiLei Well, AFAIK, "Han" in the phrase "Hao Han" is not used in the same sense is "Han" meaning the Han people/ethnic group (e.g. 汉族). "Hao Han" (好汉) is just a common phrase meaning brave man, manly man, etc. Try searching for "haohan" on nciku.com. This translation is simplified and is much more proper in the English language then the typical literal character-by-character Chinese translation.

Literal translation if often more confusing because it would be filled with many layers of metaphors.

Unlike the English language, which is spoken in many singular words that are defined, Chinese language, likewise with many older world languages, are spoken with characters or images, thus the literal meaning and metaphor arises intuitively.

This Mandarin audio version was ripped from a VHS release from Canada, which I still own, and fused with the DVD video. The VHS had no credit line to it and predates the DVD releases from HK from MegaStar and possibly another vendor in which 2 versions was sung in Mandarin and Cantonese both by George Lam. When Columbia Tristar got exclusive U.S. distribution rights for release, they only had the Cantonese from the Megastar release.

The DVD video that you see here was used from the MegaStar DVD from HK in which George Lam sung the Cantonese version and was replaced by the Mandarin track version from my ancient VHS.

The opening of Once upon a time in China was done by someone else singing in Cantonese. If you can't find this song, it is easy to buy in Itunes store, I know they have it in one of Jackie Chan's almbums. 他唱歌唱得很好!

Someone told me it is Jackie Chan, and if so, it is an earlier version in Mandarin that's really hard to find. Depending where and when you got the DVD from for both part I and II, some versions may have a Mandarin track. Most HK and US DVD now have ONLY Cantonese track sung by George Lam. This version here is from a VHS that I had to get from Canada way back in 1991 (when DVD wasn't around yet, except for laser discs), when most Americans don't even knew who Jet Li was.

Yeah that was my impression as well. I heard Jackie Chan sung OTHER Mandarin versions AFTER the movie became a huge hit in the U.S. And I can't detect any of his vocals in this song.

Also when this Mandarin soundtrack was release in 1991 along with the movie. Jackie Chan was not part, in anyway, with the Tsui Hark production of this movie at the time.

The theme song to the Once Upon a Time in China series is taken from the Ming Dynasty folk song "Under the General's Orders"; the version used for the films is entitled "A Man Should Better Himself" and was written by Wong Jim.

The Cantonese version of the song is sung by George Lam and the Mandarin version is sung by Jackie Chan.

I know you got this info from the Wiki link. Their are multiple Mandarin versions. George Lam ALSO sung a version in Mandarin for the first movie and perhaps even the second. This version here that you see is most likely NOT a Jackie Chan version as explained in my earlier posts. And BTW, it's James Wong Jim.

Sorry but I don't have the original OST of this very old mandarin version. This was probably the original mandarin version prior to any other mandarin or cantonese songs when it was released back in 1993. I've had to crudely recorded this song from VHS back then. I'm still looking for an original laser disc which may have this song in it.
