Blues goes beyond technique, which is an acquired thing, mechanical and cerebral. Feeling is close, but even here, feeling is vague. What one may feel as blues, may not be felt by others. Blues is a thing you either have or don't. It's beyond both technique and feeling, it's more close to spiritual, a thing written in and of the heart. It's a thing that transfers into sound, from a place deep within.
I've never understood this technique argument. You have to have technique to express a feeling on a guitar. I mean the techique for being a great point guard is completely different from the technique needed to be a great power forward even if both are playing the same sport. Same with the guitar. Want to make a guitar sing like BB King or sound like a horn section like T-bone Walker or wail like two cats fighting like Muddy Waters... It takes technique and lots of practice
i agree with u there, jesusjones2944, but clapton has great technique AND knows how to use it, and it goes without saying that clapton has feeling. i saw him and doyle live a few nights ago and was blown away. but whether u have feeling or not, u need to know how to express it, and clapton does, thru careful study of all the greats that have gone before him, so yeah, he has great technical knowledge of singing the blues.
