According to prominent Jewish rabbis in Israel and the U.S., Talmudic Orthodox Judaism condones blowing a elderly man out of a wheelchair with explosives launched from helicopter warship missiles (as in the case of Israel's assassination of Sheik Ahmed Yassin on 3-22-04).
In which forum shall we look to find you wringing your hands over this particularly repulsive spectacle of Jewish extremism, Sam??? Ye hypocrites!
@godonlyknows3 He was asking for evidence, which is perfectly reasonable, and you appealed to your own authority. Perhaps you could point out some of Sam Harris' quotes that would shed light on why you think that? Here's one that might change your mind: "If it's possible to love your neighbor as yourself, I'm interested in learning how to do that. I just don't think we have to believe anything on insufficient evidence in order to do it."
@godonlyknows3 I'm seconds away from blocking you. Are you going to substantiate your foolish remarks or not? Seriously, why do you believe that Sam Harris wants to believe in god? It's a ridiculous claim that I'd like some backing for.
@TimothyStuartRiches - First, why would you make the "blocking you comment"? Are you immature (are you young?) and afraid to debate the topic? Why post the video if you can't handle the discussion? Makes no sense...you have all of about 10 comments, don't you wont participation? Stand up and debate your position.
You need to read more about Sam Harris and how he came to his current position. Sam is on a journey to understand religion and mystical experience. He wants an answer. Don't you?
@godonlyknows3 Not young, old enough to have heard many theist rationalizations. I don't post these for debate, but for instruction. I'm not in this to learn from theists, only to infuriate them. Theists have ALL the explaining to do in order for their belief system to survive the next decade or two. They have failed miserably. I'll answer your question though. NO I don't want to find god. Clearly a man made concept bleeding from a million cuts. Irrelevant is worse than dead and you know it.
@TimothyStuartRiches - Well first, I'm not a theist. Nothing I have said is a rationalization of anything. You seem to be invested in Sam Harris for some reason. I found him interesting and entertaining like a monkey at the zoo..lol, just kidding there, don't block me. I do find Sam to be the most interesting of the new atheist. You don't want to find god, then why ask for evidence for god (Sam does)? Scientific if evidence is also a human construct. No?
@godonlyknows3 Depends how your define god. If it the mysognist, murder and slave enabler god of the monotheisms than no. That is a god I most certainly would hope would not exist. Lucky for me there is no evidence for such a god. If you want to take a deist stance and talk about a 'higher power' god, then you still run into the problem of definition as the term is too vague to mean anything. I believe things to be true when they are supported by evidence. You can still try and wow me tho :)
@lambofpaul - "Depends how your define god." - God can not be defined nor can god be a cause or be caused (within our known laws of physics). If you want evidence for god than you run into the problem that science can not answer that question. "Is there a god" is not a valid scientific question. All systems of logic are circular by nature. Anything you can draw a circle around can not be proved without referring to something outside the circle, something you believe to be true but cant prove.
@godonlyknows3 The god of the monotheisms is defined in the holy books in which he is supposed to have revealed himself and his message to the world. I understand what you mean by all logic is circular by nature, however its misleading and poorly worded. Your referring to the limits of our understanding. Your doing what many theists do, and that is to defend theism by (intentionally?) referring to deistic principles.
@lambofpaul - "Your referring to the limits of our understanding." - Not exactly. I am referring to what is understood. As in mathematics, all logic is incomplete. It is not poorly worded at all...In the bible, god is defined as...who is. "I Am Who Is". The bible is in an interpretation of god but that's IT!
@godonlyknows3 Im "into" labels insofar as they help me organize different philosophies and principles. It is possible to ditch the atheist label tho. Harris and Hitchens both make the point that we dont have words for people who dont believe in fairies. "The bible is an interpretation of god but thats it"- You clearly dont know much about Islam, the koran is considered the literal word of god. You also say your not a deist, I still dont think you know what that is.
@lambofpaul - I Know what a deist is.... I must admit, I don't see the evidence for atheism. What tell me that it is a correct position? What evidence?
@godonlyknows3 Well im glad you understand deism because you certainly dont understand atheism. There is no "evidence" for atheism. The burden of proof is on the religious who claim that something exists, not those who are unconvinced. Atheism is a really a default position. I'm not to sure what you are, but I can almost safely assume you dont believe in Zeus. You are atheist towards Zeus. Now imagine how silly it would be if someone said he exists and you have to disprove it or its true.
@godonlyknows3 Like 2leghumanist says, the definition of the word. Imagine you were part of an uncontacted tribe and you knew nothing of the monotheisms. You would be atheist towards the god of the monotheisms and you wouldnt even know it. This is a wonderful point to think about, i forget who said it, but if god does exist, he (or she?) failed at getting his most basic message to the world. There are uncontacted tribes who have had no exposure to Christianity.
@godonlyknows3 Imagine that the monotheist god "God' was named Jerry. Now imagine that Jerry's existence was disproved. Would you still refer to what we cannot know as Jerry? Same thing applies to leprechauns. You would not argue that leprechauns might exist beyond what we know. Whose to say that this all encompassing deist god is not unlike a force like evolution? This is why atheists are calling to rationally criticize religion. Its intellectually insulting and dangerous.
I dont have a problem with deists. It often leads to interesting philosophical talks. I do have a problem with theists. It sounds like your a deist. But understand that your original comment attacks someone who is attacking theism, not deism.
