Just because she writes and records pop doesn't make her contribution to music any less valid. The other names you mention are just as valid. No one (credible) would say Mariah is more of a poet than Bob Dylan, but they would say she's more of a voice. That doesn't mean one is better than the other, although you may prefer one over the other.
