Great performance. I have a point to make about the Liu's costume: it reminds me of a ghastly tragic story written by a 14th century chinese writer about a widow who was wronged and exercuted unjustly, prophecizing about unaturally events that would happen as a proof of her innocence. The story has since being dramatized in Traditional chinese opera. There are an urban legend that whoever wears that costume when playing a female tragic role would be possesed the soul of that wronged woman.

Leona Mitchell is adorable as Liu. She is even more moving in the 1987 performance with Eva marton. Love her. I saw her as Aida in Orange, France in 1995. Apart from a few minor weaknesses, it was a good Aida.

Leona Mitchell is an outstanding soprano who never got the recognition she deserved because she chose to devote herself to family rather than her career.  One of the best sopranos of her era.
