  • wish we could play this song again, its so perfect

  • I've convinced our band director to have us play this at our spring concert. I play euphonium in concert band, and since we don't have any horns, I get a solo at the beginning. :)

  • Absolutely gorgeous. Ticheli, man, it's incredible.

  • @TheaterGeek7777776 Which is something that is, sadly, almost non-existent in my school. French horn is kinda difficult though.

  • the value of good french horns......priceless

  • I got the flute solo but our french horns are really bad, so I get to play it with a saxophone :(

  • @14562839 I have the saxophone solo :)

  • My band played this at band camp last year, I freakin love this arr.!

  • gives me the chills every time..

  • I love this song, despite how overrated it is (in the vocal world). It's beautiful.

  • Percussion-3 especially vibraphone!!!

  • Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you,

Away you rolling river. Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you, Away, I'm bound away, 'cross the wide Missouri.

  • great song but when we do it at our band our french horn and one baritone (played on trombone) cant hit the first notes. kinda ruins it.

  • its hard to play when your a freshmen and this is your first year on tuba

  • 5:57 gets me every time..

  • My wind ensemble has done this in one of our concerts and we sounded amazing! We're playing this and 2 our pieces in Florida this year and I can't wait!

  • @JDBbabii16 my band is going to florida this year too to preform! Marching band and concert band!

  • 2nd trumpet part :D

  • playing this song for festival this year i cant wait i realy like it

  • Trombone♥

  • i love playing this song for band ♥ #ERHS

  • One of my band directors conducted my band through this for his last concert with us. 1st trombone was a little moving toward the end.

  • The 2nd clarinet part for this is amazing. :D I am enthralled by the part at measure 56, I believe it was in my piece, where they come in with Battle Hymn Of The Republic.

  • i think techli hates trumpets in this piece and blue shades (whcih we are playing for my band) trumpets are baiscilly left out :'(

  • @SocialistSwine I play Bari, and I feel your pain.... :'(

  • I have to ask. Does Mr. Ticheli despise baritone saxophone? Just got my part handed out for this brilliant example of his work and once again my part is painfully boring.

  • @SocialistSwine Bass Clarinet part isn't that exciting either...

  • I wish we could play this...I play french horn...*sigh*

  • im playing this song for fmcmea

  • couldve had the euphonium solo in the begining if it wasnt for the fact that i had a solo in the previous concert

  • Great song.. i love playing this on euphonium but sad my band decided not to do this but we picked an equally good song to play for competition.. has a great soothing sound instead we did canterbury chorale by Jan Van der Roost great two songs

  • I played this last year for our UIL Competition in 8th, and we sounded good :D (Not nearly as good as this of course :P)

  • My band is playing this for competition...i wish our french horns were this good :')

  • @AzianPersuasion96 our band is too

btw its always the first note that gets our horns

  • We used a variation of this in our Drum Corps for our on-field warm up. Needless to say, it was pretty dang spectacular to hear it echo across the trees when we were done.

  • @Lufbery17 What Drum Corp are you in??

  • @KasumiDOA3 Shenandoah Sound.

  • @Lufbery17 Yeah drum corp!!! shenandoah sound is dci right

  • One of his best! Always got emotional when we rehearsed/performed this...very moving

  • I played the beginning on my trombone. I make it sound just like this. But my friend makes it sound even better on euphonium. But it's unbeatable when played well on the french horn. It makes me melt, dude. So soothing.

  • The high school I'm at now played this piece last year while ironically I played parts of it in American Riversongs last year in my All-Suburban band. We would have sectionals over the summer for marching band but some of the upper classmen would play this song cause they loved it so much <3

  • Oh how i loved playing this last year

  • Is it just me, or do the clarinets sound a bit out of tune?

  • Flutes <3 1st chair in Symphonic band.

  • playing this song on f horn was such an experience. something i'll never forget. <3

  • Love the flute spilt solo! First one I ever got ;)

  • I Loved playing this song soooo much.. Sooooo beautiful!!!

  • I'm playing this song in a woodwind quintet for my solo ensemble contest :) This is even prettier, trumpets and all the other instruments adding to it make the piece come alive even more. (P.S. I play French horn :) )

  • I liked this as a euphonium player, but I enjoyed First Suite in Eb by Gustav Holst much more.

  • @xxTheDutchBoyxx HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT? </3

  • *wonders how many people found this from being part of the same group as he is*

  • Ah... I loved playing this. <Fluter-tooter right here!

  • 3:24. work it, flutes. ♥

  • @Radonkulusness I agree that those particular instruments make the piece, even though I do not play one of them... but that last comment was very uncalled for.

  • are those french horns?! wow, i need to learn! :D

  • Trumpets #1. Clarinets can sit down.

  • Trumpets <3

  • Heavy Metals Representin!

  • French Horns <3

  • @xDecodeYourThoughts euphonium :(

  • @sephiroththeman Hey, euphoniums are just as amazing in this song, and even in general. I met probably the coolest guy I know this year, and he plays euphonium. he's an AMAZING player.

  • Flutes<3

  • Clarinet <3

  • Saying that Clarinets are better than Saxophones is like saying (insert your favorite incorrect statement here).

  • Saxes all the way. We got to play this piece back in March at Carnegie Hall, and I was the one playing the saxophone solo. This piece is just beautiful.

  • @raina2224 Problem is... I'm stuck in middle school. Guess what? The rest of my section sucks. Do you know what that means? OFFBEATS!!! But now we're playing this cool piece called "On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss" by Holsinger and it has a french horn solo at the beginning...

  • BONES!

  • Thumbs up if you're a horn player and you're tired of boring parts and you want more pieces like this...

  • @geniusboy98 OMG! Like the annoying off beats on marches. I'm a horn player and we played amazing grace the frank ticheli version and I played first horn. It was such a great piece.

  • saxophones <3

  • Low brass represent.....lol baritones especially

  • i play horn. and i love our part on this song. :')

  • EUPHONIUMS!

  • love this song

  • Hands down, CLARINETS OWN THIS SONG! :)

  • @shoopyman72 No the saxophone solo does!!

  • @SuperBandgeek01 Saxophone is cool, but clarinets are better! :)

  • This song is absolutely amazing!

  • This song will always make me want to cry. Our band dedicated this song to one of the Freshmen in our band who died two weeks after our last Marching Band competition. Rest in peace, Jonathan Magana.

  • Euphs represent! Love this song <3

  • Tenor Sax holdin it down!!!!

  • Sorry. That dash was supposed to be part of the heart...

  • Love it!! -3 euphoniums rule :)

  • i loved playing this piece for band!

  • My all time favorite piece to play Baritone/Trombone for life

  • Props to the French Horns. That first note chord was bearable. (Its a VERY difficult range and chord to just hit, and it being a pick-up to start the song doesn't help)

  • @SquallLionhart409 low concert b flat! -____- i played this piece years ago and I still remember it. lol.

  • @brittanybetrayall I love my low concert B flats... but then I play trombone :D. Bb to Eb is almost stereotypical for Ticheli by now... I guess this is another to add to the list.

@xxTheDutchBoyxx I prefer the first and third movements of Holst's 1st Suite in Eb as well, but Ticheli's American Elegy will always be my favorite.

  • Saxophones <3 :)

  • Flutes dominate.♥

  • Played this at districts... Frank Ticheli is a GOD. :D This song NEVER fails to give me chills every time.

  • i remember my band played this for contest last year. I loved playing the vibes part and all the instrumentals sounded dynamic and they played with emotion.

  • i love playing the f.horn duet <3 its so calming <3

  • Ah clarinet <3

  • such a beautiful song

  • flutes♥

  • hey the trumpets are there to you guys gosh...GO HIGH BRASS

  • key changes rip my heart out.

  • @Godislovecrzy09 YEAH!!! :D

  • MY SYMPHONIC BAND PLAYED THIS!!!!!!! I LOVED IT!!!!

  • Tenor sax!!! Keepin that bass line movin!!!

Its crazy because i have had experience playin this 2 years in a row

Last year on Alto and I thought we never stood out

this year on Tenor and I love how we sound!

  • i love marching season best time of the year!!!! claries<3

  • I made my alto saxophone section leader cry on this piece since we played this at graduation; it made me cry too. What a sad and moving day.

  • flutes <3

  • we did this in marching band. 4:38 to the end was the most epic part, much more epic in marching band.

  • @VenomEmperor I would kill to see that in a show.

  • Just played this tonight in the Straits Area Concert Band and it gave me the chills..what a beautiful song

  • @caseysterly I was there listening! All of you did a great Job! :)

  • @hawkinstaylor51 oh really you from up here?

  • @caseysterly Nope, I was up there on vacation and we were near the park so we decided to come watch. It was pretty awesome to listen to haha. Good job!

  • Clarinets make a Tichelli piece what it is. <3

  • @cLaRiNetLoVer503 Amen to that! Clarinets are amazing, or I'm just being prejudice because I play the clarinet! :)

  • @cLaRiNetLoVer503 And french horns. OMG french horns. And that is coming from a trumpet player ;)

  • This song completely gives me chills at the beginning. It's amazing, and beautiful.

  • My all time best favorite piece of music, ever. EVER. SO powerful. It actually brings tears to my eyes every time.

  • I freaking love this piece, which is saying something because the contralto clarinet parts are sooooo boring, but this song is so beautiful I don't mind so much.

  • Comment removed

  • who would dislike this?? it's a beautiful piece

  • i, personally, think those intense suspended cymbal rolls are the best. but that's just me.

  • Gosh, i love music. :*)

  • playing the alto sax duet sucked with a flute that couldnt hold pitch.

  • Probably my all time favorite piece to play on Baritone :)

  • @TheBrendo525 I definitely have to agree. I played the euphonium part on trombone, never gonna forget this song. I love it so freakin' much. :)

  • Comment removed

  • it bothers me when people that play saxes dont know how to spell 'saxophone' and spell it 'saxaphone'

  • FLUTES <3

  • i have to sing thi song

  • flute 3 all the way :)

  • Absolutly beautiful.

  • THUMB THIS FLUTE!!!! too much silence for flute but exelent!!! flute trioo xD!!!!!11

  • i LOVE this song. we played this last year in our high school concert band, it was beautiful.

  • @Katoria294 we played it in middle school

  • nothing compares to the beauty of the clarinet

  • just played this piece in our spring concert a few days ago. beauuuutiful<3 this is the kind of music i didn't understand as a middle school instrumentalist, and now I treasure them. this is why i smh at middle school band directors that give their kids music like this just cause its easy. it takes mature musicians to make the true music with things like this.

  • saxaphones all the way !

  • flutes represent!

  • Played this song this year, I'll never ever forget how beautiful it sounds.

  • I am working on a band arrangement of this tune as well. I of course cannot hold a candle to Frank Ticheli's masterful arranging. :)

  • i play this song

  • I played this song in 7th grade:) it's so far my favorite song we've played...EVER! I love it:)))))

  • lets jump the one person who disliked this

  • When we played this at summer camp. It was so good my mom (even my dad) cried :)

  • i played this song my freshman year and i have to say its closest to one of the hardest songs i have ever played because you need the right pitches and the best tone for this and thats so hard to do and also the tempo its hard to stay at a slow tempo. but this is by far one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard or played

  • Flute trioooo! :D

  • 4:35 - 5:00 will give the chills to anyone who knows nothing about music

  • really beautiful..i remember this kid in our class last year fell asleep while we were playing this >.<

  • Trombones are the best. You know why? Because we do it best in all seven positions

  • @Chewbaca18 hahahaha nice

  • We are playing this in the song American Riversongs, which has I think three different songs in it. But this is my favorite :)

  • Fluteee (:

Played This For Adjudication In Disney On Saturday .

  • We played this two years ago for our UIL contest and i had the trumpet solo. Every time i hear it, it brings warmth to my heart. One of Ticheli's best pieces.

  • Trumpets!!!!!! ^____^

  • Trumpets!! :D

  • somehow, this song reminds me of "Sword of the Stranger" maybe that's just me O.O

  • Oh i love this so much! I love the clarinet parts but I;m can't get the upper range real good (Over the staff notes after C) anybody have something that could halp me???

  • @XxRedxX12345 . Long tones!

  • @mikespikke1 that would help my above the staff note?!?!?!? really? i didnt know that

  • we are playing this for my spring concert and i get to have the trumpet solo...i about cry everytime i have to play. :)

  • AGHH! I get shivers & tingles EVERY time I listen to this song!! It never fails!! What's even better is playing it at districts... WOW. It's just so amazing being right in the middle of it all! It was a ginormous musical orgasm! :D

  • @dennalilly I know exactly how you feel. I cannot express in words how this song makes me feel. Especially when you're in the middle of a large, experienced, and talented band. There is no other substitute in the world for such a feeling. 99% of the time I have tears in my eyes by the first minute of the song. It's good to know I'm not the only one that gets excited about great music. =] haha

  • When Ticheli was our conductor he made us play this song till our lips fell off. I hate this song soooooooooooooo much now lol

  • @Entreprenerd2009

Hey, at least you got to work with a musical genius like Ticheli.
