Once I thought I have heard every KW song ever recorded, I run across this one. Another masterpiece from Keith. There is much irony here. Thanks for share'n this great song.Bud
@budmorgan64 Keith and Kix Brooks did all the demos from Tree Publishing from several years in the mid 1980s. Many written by Keith and Kix. There are dozens of them that are in the vaults somewhere. RCA says that someday they will release them.
@1dillontaylor The song is called "Lord, It Sure Is Drunk Out Tonight." Think about it. If you need a JKW fix, come on over to my channel. I have at least 70 Keith Whitley videos that will feed your need. Thanks.
@1dillontaylor Hey this is a great video but you are an uneducated moron to term college people dumbasses. College grads are the ones who work in every upper mangement position in every company and america could not function without college educated people. So just because you are trailor trash and recite the term "would you like fries with that" do not insult educated people that have goals and a purpose in this world besides a waste of space.
Could you please share a link to an MP3 for this? I've tried everywhere i can possibly think of and so far this video is the only place I can find this song and I really want it.
A very talented drunk. People don't get and stay sober because it's not as easy as staying drunk. It's hard but worth it. Better him than me. He couldn't hack life sober. Alcoholics that drink don't do well. He could have had an amazing long life. Couldn't hack it. Oh well, pass the salt. No sympathy. I'm sober and grateful for every minute I have.
I am kinda living through this now. just had my wife of 22 yrs leave me. At times it seems the bottle is my only friend. Not a good thing, but right now its my thing. Thank you keith for all your great music. I feel your pain.
sober for twenty years i can relate and i never forget what drunkeness is like. Ilived in a hell for 30 yrs and am blessed i don't have to do it that way anymore. Thank you k
....i think people should've payed a little more attention to these lyrics.....maybe keith could've been helped.....i heard he did his drinkin alone and no one really knew he had a problem with it.....but hell....if you hear this song you can tell!......i mean it's upbeat.....but......that don't make a difference.....the lyrics are still sad........this is all just my opinion.....hindsight's 20/20 i reckon
Some do and some don't. Alcholism is often coupled with clinical depression, as it did in Keith's case. This leaves the person with a completely distorted view of life and the world around him and makes it easy for the person to constantly fall off the wagon. Its a complex difficult issue for even the most skilled professionals to deal with.
Thanks. Another of Keith's own songs, My Old Friend, is even more explicit in dealing with his own alcoholism and depression, which started during his days with Ralph Stanley (long before Lorre). Also his entire final album "Do You Think Of Me?" deals with it directly. Keith's unabashed emotionalism and introspection makes these recordings overwhelmingly powerful.

Thank YOU! I feel the same way about Lorrie Morgan as I do about Keith. On one her Song's Comments someone accused her of KILLING Keith, and then went on to refer to her as Classy "White Trash". Well, he got reprimanded REAL FAST by ME ! Keith, sadly, was killed by a VICIOUS Disease called Alcoholism. If it weren't for Lorrie's LOVE I think he would have been gone sooner. And she's NOT "Trash" !!!
Well, her old drummer knows her way better than I do, let's just say it that way. The tryst, I think, definitely hastened things. If he had lived, the Whitley/Morgan union would not have lasted long. And Keith was not exactly faithful, either.
Thanks for clearing that up. NOBODY'S perfect. We know that Lorrie and Keith had some VERY difficult times, but I'll never think any less of either of them for any of it. and Lorrie still stands by her Man !
AWESOME! At first when I started to watch it I was beginning to get angry because I thought it would be direspectful to Keith Memory, but it wasn't at all. in fact I think it's quite a good Tribute! And Alcohol almost killed me !
Then that would prove that you don't know me, because if you did you'd know that I don't say anything or post anything to besmearch Keith's memory, nor do I condone the actions of anyone that do. My job here is to protect Keith's memory and to help preserve it for a new generation of country music fans. I wouldn't deserve my position as associate director of the Keith Whitley Association if that weren't true.
Of course I don't know you. And of course after seeing your Title, you would never do anything to disgrace Keith's Memory. please don't misunderstand me. I think Keith Whitley is one of the GREATEST Country Singers that has ever existed ! It's just after I saw the first couple of "Slides" in this Video, I thought it was going to glorify Alcoholism. Thankfully it didn't.
No offense taken, now that I know you feel the same way I do about the man. This video was meant to cast dispersion on a way of life people choose (or not) to live, a life (thankfully) I don't know anything about.
i know first what aolchol can do to a person and loved ones i have a drinking problem and for some reason i heard this song and man it brought back some memories form my teenage years..i should have already been dead but thank god i'm not and i live with this problem and i have my down days where it is so easy to give in but i know what i don't want to happen..keith whitley is so amazing
You and me both. That's why the fans are so close-knit, because we're always hungry for something "new," something we've never heard before. And when one comes across something, they share with the fans (providing the family OK's it, of course). I guess that's where I come in. Thanks for stopping by. And sign that petition!
How many songs did Keith whitley record during his shortlived career? I know this is one of several songs posted on Youtube that aren't on any of his albums. I love this song. Keith Whitley was true to his country roots and he always poured out all his heart and soul in all his songs. His music was so genuine and as country as it could get. It's a shame his career was cut short from alcoholism.
It's hard to say just how many he did record since the age of 15, since he began recording. He actually had a relatively long career, but I think you're just referring to his RCA days. He's even written songs that he never pursued getting copyrights for. That is to say that they're not registered with Tree, his old publishing company. Thanks for your comments! And be sure to sign the petition to get him considered for the CMHOF. The link's on my channel.
My brother looked a lot like Keith Whitley and he died pretty much the same way. I am raising his daughter. I love my brother and I miss him. He has been dead eight years. He told me he toyed with death every day and I assured him I would take care of his child if something happened to him. I even paid for his funeral, that was my baby brother. Every person that has issues still leaves a family behind to grieve. But I am towing the line.
Instead of poking fun at Keith for not being able to beat his demons, can we focus on the incredible music he left? Check out his first album, L.A. to Miami, and his first single, "Miami, My Amy". Some of the most beautiful music, full of promise. There's a vid of him doing it on YouTube. He is beautiful there, before hurricane Lorrie destroyed him. Yes, I believe she played a part in it. And if you look at her track record, she's had four husbands since him. There's a problem there.
whatever, maybe she i strying to replace him..dont ever try to answer for her, until you have walked in her shoes, dont talk fir her...she didnt put the bottle to his mouth...he knew the demons were there, it was up to HIM..not her to fight them, dont blame her
Being a recovering alcoholic i can say this..that you dont quit until u hit bottom or the alcohol kills you. I wish i could have talked to Keith, but alas the bottle took him much too soon and may God Rest his Soul. None of us know the demons that plagued his beautiful soul and voice. A tragid loss much too soon God Bless and put the plug in the jug!!
In his liner notes to "Do You Think of Me", Keith writes that its amazing that some men can't stand on their own feet without help. "My help came from a bottle. In fact it was almost exactly like this". Keith used alcohol to deal with his deep depressions. It was no joke. Like Hank, like Lefty, like Townes, it consumed his life and killed him.
You're right. The treatments, the interventions, the meds that make you sick, it's all real, and it don't work unless you have the right attitude and strong support. And then sometimes even when you have all that, it's not a guarantee that even that will work. It's serious stuff. Thanks for your comment.
My next-door neighbor just got her 20-year coin from AA last year. She's a good person and a good neighbor, a grandmother of two who's raised her children in the church. Congrats to you for taking that first step. That first step is always the hardest, they say.
I acknowledge the fact that alcoholism is very real and the grip that it has on some people is very debilitating. A lot of these people in the video chose to live this life, view alcohol as "a good time," can't have a good time without the alcohol. I don't believe that. I love Keith Whitley. Not a day goes by that I don't think about him or listen to his music. The grip on him was relentless and would not let go, despite all he did to try to break free.
Oh please. Drinking, Smoking, anything, it's all the same. You do it becaue you enjoy it, it doesn't pur itself and jump in your throat. Sure quitting mmight make you uncomfortable for a while but if you can't deal with that, you deserve liver failure. Keith Drank because he enjoyed it, for whatever reason, there was no grip, he died doing what he loved - Drinking. What's wrong with that?
That's a really perverted way of looking at it. If he wanted to drink, why did he put himself through the agony of rehab and Antabuse? Why did he pursue the help to stop?
Me or the other person? I know I don't have any first-hand information on the subject, and I thank God every day that I don't. All I know is what it's done to so many other people, people who had so much to contribute.
I guess it funny for those that have fun drinking...for those that have an issue with alcohol, maybe not so much...knowing Keith was a drunk and I might me, it aint funny to me...but, he does have a good voice!!
Keith's final album Do YOu Think Of Me deals directly with his own alcoholism and depression. These are topics that show up in many of his own songs as well (like this one). Its sad that less than two weeks after the album was completed he died from alcoholism.
That's right, he was so proud of that album, too. He put so much of himself into that last album. It's a beautiful piece of work. He took a lot of chances with the vocals, too, which he wouldn't have taken hadn't he been confident in his abilities to deliver it. Thanks for your comment and for stopping by.
You're right, it's not. So when RCA... BMG... BNA... whatever they're calling themselves today... say they've released everything, that there's nothing left, don't believe the hype. There was a lot out there. Probably enough for one or two more albums.
its one of many demos Keith did when he was primarily a song writer. many of them are on keith Whitley Blvd on Yahoo. They can be downloaded and stored on cds.
No, it's not. You might want to try looking for a download of this on the Keith Whitley Blvd. Yahoo! group files page. I'm not sure if this one is available there or not.
Yeah, some of them were pretty funny. A personal question, Elin, if you're ready for it... Does it bother you to be around drunk people? It makes me uncomfortable.
Well, as you might be able to guess, I don't drink, and I don't associate with anyone who has been. After May 9, 1989, I pretty much became dead set against alcohol. I only ever tasted a capful of peach schnapps, and my dad was with me, so it was no secret.
That's cool. Nothing wrong with that. I guess I've been kinda sheltered from it. Members of my family that drank or did any sort of recreational drugs (if they did) didn't do it around me.
There was not a shortage of pictures of people partaking of alcohol on the Internet. The video really made itself. I was happy to find another family portrait of Keith and Lorrie and the kids. Keith wrote songs this way quite often, using the play on words. He wrote one called "Flying Colors" that was just full of them. I might have to make a video for that song sometime. Really cute song!
He would be singing about the same thing that killed him. WTF?

It's is so ironic to hear him singing this..and SO sad!
This should be shown to anyone who struggles with alcohol but I WOULD change some of the pics to show the "dark" side of alcoholism.

Spoken like a true hillbilly who has no education on the truth behind alcoholism. You sound like the half of my family thats going or already gone.

I have every Keith Whitley album ever released and this song isn't on any of them.

RossM3838 3 years ago
is this on a cd?
vampirepez 3 years ago
No, it's not. You might want to try looking for a download of this on the Keith Whitley Blvd. Yahoo! group files page. I'm not sure if this one is available there or not.

Yeah, some of them were pretty funny. A personal question, Elin, if you're ready for it... Does it bother you to be around drunk people? It makes me uncomfortable.
MAMsMom97 4 years ago
well, it depends I guess. But most of the time - no :)

Well, as you might be able to guess, I don't drink, and I don't associate with anyone who has been. After May 9, 1989, I pretty much became dead set against alcohol. I only ever tasted a capful of peach schnapps, and my dad was with me, so it was no secret.
MAMsMom97 4 years ago
ok, that I respect:) I'm not like that though.

I mean, I do enjoy having a drink or glass of wine :)
