It's not quite right to say that DEVO were ahead of their time as that suggest that the rest will eventually catch up, when in fact they are getting further and further away....devolving, if you will...
If you don't love Uncontrollable Urge there may not be hope for you. It's the second hardest rocking DEVO song ever (the hardest being the "Mr. DNA" half of Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA) and here, our spud heros rock it harder than most bands ever dream they could. When Devo kick the snot out of songs like Wiggly World, Strange Pursuit, Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA and Uncontrollable Urge, they are in a league of their own. Thirty years later and these spud boys are STILL ahead of their time.
Hey that Japanese girl band in Kill Bill did that yeah yeah yeah line in one of their songs in the movie. I never knew they stole that from Devo......
I saw them in concert in 1981, and this video comes the closest to any I've seen of capturing what their live performances were like. They really were this fast and precise, and they made it look easy. They started marching in place at the beginning of their first set, and they never stopped until intermission. They just segued from one song to the next -- no pauses, no patter, no nothing. It was kind of superhuman.
Are they not men?! HELL YES! That performance was amazing! I have replayed this videos about 20 times. I love the YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH!......YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!!!!! Totally freaking cool! I also miss this kind of music. I miss the energy, the watts, the power, the voltage that this era of true Rock n' Roll music had 30 years ago. Why in the hell can't music be like this today? This stuff totally kicks ass.
A great band from Champaign-Urbana used to cover this - Hot Glue Gun. That made me search this out, and I'm not disappointed. I love the Misty Mountain Hop riff. Check my channel for some good blues slide guitar music. Not much like this, I guess...but if I like this, and you do too...well, maybe you'll like it!
@johnny07652 you don't want to insult a band whose major fan base is comprised of insanely devoted nerds. they tend to be more liable to snap and hunt you down for insulting their favorite band as opposed to fans of a less magnificently nerdy band.
@darthfrodo44 I'm not worried about NERDS hunting me down. All they'll do is roll a seventeen-sided die and tell me I lost hit points and expect me to pretend I died. At which point I will stuff them all into the nearest locker. Plus I'll call my frat brother Ogre over and he'll terrorize them.
Don't bother with the unevolved closeminded guy posting hate. Persons like that are incapable of independent thought. Let him enjoy his brainwashed, sheepish mindset.
@ronaldvanderkleij; If I'm not entirely mistaken Howard Devoto was one of the founding members of the british band Buzzcocks, and had nothing to do with Television (even though they are both great bands).
Are they not men??? unbelievably great performance. These guys were far too ahead of their time and MADE for the video age. They were unique, original and creative even if you didn't like their music or some of it you have to respect the fact that they stuck their necks out by boldy trying something different. I miss this kind or creativity and originality in music.
@patlavert Yep, the 80's was a very unique time for music that showed TRUE musical diversity! These days everyone sounds the same. Like a bunch of whiny ass cry babies with nothing to sing about and no political point to make. Back in the 80's a good 80% were making a statement and had thier own creative talented sound. There's no more true talent or creativity anymore........The talent pool has officially dried up!!!
I don't know if the talent pool is officially dried up. It does seem so though when one looks at the charts. I see mostly shallow, bland, talentless, prefabricated and completely overrated dung like Beeber for example. Or mindless "same old lyrics same old beats" rappers. I believe there are some bands out there "on the fringes" like Devo was but they are hugely ignored because the powerful record companies rarely seek them out. That's too bad for us, the fans/consumers/customers.
Purchased first album and was die hard fan even before they played Satisfaction on SNL. But after our high school cheerleading squad developed a routine to "Whip It", I felt my anti-establishment band was stolen from me.
I totally get that. Purchased first album and was die hard fan even before they played Satisfaction on SNL. But after our high school cheerleading squad developed a routine to "Whip It", I felt my anti-establishment band was stolen from me.

I remember being surprised to see my "Spud Boys" from Akron introducing their underground 70's music to an 80's mainstream Top 40 TV audience. It just didn't fit right. But at least it was on "FRIDAY'S" instead of Donny and Marie. It worked out well though. As would have it, it turned out to be an awesome live performance!
