There's actually a bit of context to support that it's a reference to pikachu; remember the mask trading sidequest in Ocarina of Time? The soldier guarding the gate to Death Mountain (the guy you sell the keaton mask to, and the first guy you show zelda's letter to), he tells you about his son and the craze the keaton mask is causing among young children? I think Nintendo is referencing the craze pokemon had in Ocarina of Time, come to think of it, it's actually one of the deeper references.

Also, unless you beat the game with all characters, you don't get to see the real ending. I guess they figured the game was too hard for stupid americans. The actual Mario 2 was later released in America as Mario the Lost Levels, and in Japan they later released our Mario 2 as 'Super Mario USA'.
