keaton isnt a reference to pikachu, it is a reference to fox, if you look at the line up of masks you will see fox, falcon, rabbit, frog, and pig. the characters fromstarfox
plus in oot 3d if you go into geroudo fortress an go into this one room and break these to crates there is a painting of skyward sword link its true I tryed it myself
I've played like 2 Zelda's, and in oot in the window there are paintings of Mario Luigi bowser yoshi and peach in Zelda's courtyard, and in links awakening there's a yoshi doll you win in a claw game and there's goombas.
The keaton mask isn't based on pikachu. Its based on a wolf from chinese folklore if I remember correctly. You can look it up on google to check for sure.
Forgot about the stone in goron's dungeon saying L is real 2041 and the pictures in the castles right side which you can see through the window...(Pretty obvious)
Keaton mask is not a nod to Pikachu. Although the colors are the same, the scheme is associated with celestial kitsune (usually yellow or white). Also, slit/narrowed eyes are recurring among kitsune lore in the media.
There's actually a bit of context to support that it's a reference to pikachu; remember the mask trading sidequest in Ocarina of Time? The soldier guarding the gate to Death Mountain (the guy you sell the keaton mask to, and the first guy you show zelda's letter to), he tells you about his son and the craze the keaton mask is causing among young children? I think Nintendo is referencing the craze pokemon had in Ocarina of Time, come to think of it, it's actually one of the deeper references.
@XFalconZeroii Yeah and also in Majoras Mask you can encounter an actual Keaton in the shrubs in clock town. Just saying the mask is probably based off the Keatons in the game.
@SlippSkipp I think, only Nintendo knows. If I could ask 'em, I would, but I don't know if it's just a coincidence, I mean, Pokemon came out LONG before Keaton's Mask was even thought of, and Pikachu's always been INSANELY popular, so I wouldn't really be surprised if they did base it on Pikachu's face. Now, I'm not proving, nor disproving your statement. It COULD very well be merely a coincidence!
The Keaton Mask was a reference to Pikachu, the games came out about the same time and the game even talks about how the character had been getting popular around that time.
...None of these are really 'secret'. They are, if anything, blatant- completely obvious to anyone who's played Mario and Zelda. Except your E-Gadd's. Those are very long stretches of your imagination.
also, if u look on talon and ingo on zelda OoT, they're like mario and luigi, Zelda looks like princess peach and melon and talon have bowser's medalion.
I got some more, in zelda oot too (lol this reverse letters i got randomly), on zelda's castle u look on the windows and u can see yoshi's pictures.
@mpdkrm yes enemy, MM was an alternate dimension and was released after OoT. the keatons i can recall were in link to the past and minnish cap, i know they are in more but i havent played the others in a while
The kearton mask, (unlike pikachu who is a mouse) is based off of a fox, This is discovered in Legend of zelda Majora's mask when you slice up cirten patches of grass a kearton pops out of the ground and talks to you (if you have the mask on)
On that note, I want to point out that anything in Link's Awakening (a dream) that references SMB2 (a dream) or Kirby (dreamland) seems appropriate, no?
Keaton is not a reference to pikachu xD it's a reference to the japanese fox u.u in japan the rapresentation of foxes is in that way.. like naruto or Redd from animal crossing u.u
i'm pretty sure the keaton mask is a pikachu reference, in oot, when you give it to the gaurd, he mentions that it's his sons favorite cartoon character or something along those lines.
@NoskcajJackson Yes, Doki Doki Panic was the original game that was by Dream Factory and made into a Mario game, where they removed the ability to save game and added the ability to run. Also, unless you beat the game with all characters, you don't get to see the real ending. I guess they figured the game was too hard for stupid americans. The actual Mario 2 was later released in America as Mario the Lost Levels, and in Japan they later released our Mario 2 as 'Super Mario USA'.
You forgot that guy on Mt. Tamaranch who is in that house with the cuccos. He looks a lot like Luigi.
Personally I think that mask is a reference to the ghost in Link's Awakening (it has those "ears" as well).
@Superfactmaster1 Why copyright? Both game series are Nintendo games ;) The lineup of the fox mask, frog mask, etc. in Majora's Mask's mask menu is clearly a reference to Starfox, because of this I'd say it shall show Fox.
I didn't know that with the OoT theme, it's quite interesting! :)
@Superfactmaster I'm fairly sure Nintendo owns Zelda and Pokemon....
Also, I could see Nintendo explaining the Link's Awakening ones because it was all a dream and Link was dreaming about other things in the Nintendo Universe
I don't think the Keaton Mask was a coincidence. I think it was put in to look like Pikachu on purpose, but they gave it a different name for fear of copyright claims.
The Keaton Mask is referenced back to the Nine-tailed fox, a fox demon found in Japanese folklore. The nine-tailed fox was known to be very intelligent, which is why when you speak to a Keaton they ask you a series of questions to test your intelligence. They were also known to play tricks on people, which I'm pretty sure one of the Bomber kids say in North Clock Town. So no, it isn't Pikachu.
Keaton MAsk is Pikachu. When you talk to a guard in Ocarina of Time, he says his son wants a Keaton Mask because it's all the rage with kids....like Pokemon
