They're pretty stiff on blood donation anyway. They'll question you on whether or not you've been out of the country recently, how much you drink, etc.
I donated with someone who's a pretty heavy drug user, and i'm damn sure they knew that at the time, but they still took his blood. They aren't going to use it, thank god, but the point is that they didn't turn him away because he looked like a 'stoner'.
the blood service have to be extremely strict on who can donate as it is in the best interests of the person recieving blood, you only need to read up on someone who recieved blood and unfortunately contracted hiv, although u can run tests and screen the blood, hiv can be present but not show up for up to 6 months. i do feel sorry as it is somewhat discrimating but they are not enforcing this rule just to annoy homosexuals, remember the blood is going to ppl with cancer & new born babies ect
@mortimer316 Pretty sure the FDA is aware of the time frame it takes to contract HIV and how long before it shows up in testing. They wouldn't use any blood they weren't comfortable with. Straight people donate all the time, and I'm pretty sure some of them have HIV without knowing it. If it was such a problem we would hear of dirty blood all the time. We don't. Why? Because the screening used is more complex than the average blood test. There's no reason to discriminate.

I've been told that certain tests have a high risk of false negative results, meaning you could have eaten meat tainted with mad cow disease and it not show up in a blood test. But there needs to be more awareness on issues such as these.
HIV/AIDS doesn't show up in tests until 6 months after infection, as this is the hibernation period for the virus. Still, the idea that somehow there's no risk of AIDS with straight people's blood is pretty dumb.

I'm pretty sure somebody's already said this but: you can't detect HIV right away. On the OTHER hand, they do ask you about your sexual life and you don't get to donate anyway if you've lately had sex with someone who isn't your regular partner or something like that. I believe part of the concern is based on the fact that HIV cannot be immediately detected in blood tests, sometimes taking up to 6 months to be revealed.
And I believe the hypocrisy is based on the fact that anybody can get HIV/AIDS regardless of sexual orientation. This policy stems back from when the disease was seen as a "gay disease", but even though we know better nowadays, actually changing past policies and attitudes is easier said than done.

I have my doubts about the validity of this story. I was talking to a friend in Alabama and they have to accept blood/plasma from everyone. Even though some are drug users or clearly have HIV, they take the donation and they have to discard the blood after it goes to Europe for the HIV/AIDS test.

I live in New Mexico, and in order to donate blood or plasma (I've done both) they first ask you tons of questions about your sex life, medication, health condition, countries you've visited, and more. Plus, they check your pulse and temperature. If you don't meet their strict requirements, they don't let you donate at all... I'm sure they still check the blood/plasma for diseases though

the do test blood but it is really expensive and the more blood they test that turn out to be HIV positive the more money they've wasted. i'm not saying that i agree with their discrimination i'm just saying that's why they make people fill out those questionnaires before hand.
I disagree with this law, however it seems no one here understands it. The time between contraction and testing positive in an antibodies test is 3-6 months. Gay men are 44%-50% more likely to have AIDS. The CDC doesn't want a gay man donating blood while between the window period before detection, and giving AIDS to an unsuspecting donor. There actually is a solid scientific basis for this discrimination, which is worth understanding.

It takes up to 6 weeks before a person tests positive, so if the person has had unprotected sex (with ANYONE) in the last 6 weeks that should be the rule. Straight men on the DL are FAR more dangerous in terms of HIV risk than either openly gay or homeless people.

Can nobody realize why they would turn gay people away? Look, if there's a higher percentage of 'contaminated' blood from gay people, then it would make sense to turn them away depending on how high the risk. Regardless if you can test the blood after you've taken it, when you realize the blood is no good, you've just wasted time and money for the entire process up until that point. Turning away gays lowers the odds of wasted time and money. How is that so hard to see for some people?

They're pretty stiff on blood donation anyway. They'll question you on whether or not you've been out of the country recently, how much you drink, etc.
I donated with someone who's a pretty heavy drug user, and i'm damn sure they knew that at the time, but they still took his blood. They aren't going to use it, thank god, but the point is that they didn't turn him away because he looked like a 'stoner'.

the blood service have to be extremely strict on who can donate as it is in the best interests of the person recieving blood, you only need to read up on someone who recieved blood and unfortunately contracted hiv, although u can run tests and screen the blood, hiv can be present but not show up for up to 6 months. i do feel sorry as it is somewhat discrimating but they are not enforcing this rule just to annoy homosexuals, remember the blood is going to ppl with cancer & new born babies ect

@mortimer316 Pretty sure the FDA is aware of the time frame it takes to contract HIV and how long before it shows up in testing. They wouldn't use any blood they weren't comfortable with. Straight people donate all the time, and I'm pretty sure some of them have HIV without knowing it. If it was such a problem we would hear of dirty blood all the time. We don't. Why? Because the screening used is more complex than the average blood test. There's no reason to discriminate.

I've read in some blood donor pamphlets, the legally, any gay man who has had sex within the last year can't donate blood...Its ridiculous that there is actually a generalization that they believe all sexually active gay men have some form of STDs...I understand that they're taking precaution, but why not get people tested for STDs prior to donating, instead of being so stereotypical and homophobic...They say they need as much blood as possible, but obviously theres still flaws in the system!

I'm pretty sure somebody's already said this but: you can't detect HIV right away. On the OTHER hand, they do ask you about your sexual life and you don't get to donate anyway if you've lately had sex with someone who isn't your regular partner or something like that. What I'm saying is, basically you could just ask the gay men if they're in a steady relationship or not, that's what they do with the straight people. If they feel paranoid then just put some stricter requirements for them.

I have my doubts about the validity of this story. I was talking to a friend in Alabama and they have to accept blood/plasma from everyone. Even though some are drug users or clearly have HIV, they take the donation and they have to discard the blood after it goes to Europe for the HIV/AIDS test.

I live in New Mexico, and in order to donate blood or plasma (I've done both) they first ask you tons of questions about your sex life, medication, health condition, countries you've visited, and more. Plus, they check your pulse and temperature. If you don't meet their strict requirements, they don't let you donate at all... I'm sure they still check the blood/plasma for diseases though

I disagree with this law, however it seems no one here understands it. The time between contraction and testing positive in an antibodies test is 3-6 months. Gay men are 44%-50% more likely to have AIDS. The CDC doesn't want a gay man donating blood while between the window period before detection, and giving AIDS to an unsuspecting donor. There actually is a solid scientific basis for this discrimination, which is worth understanding.

It takes up to 6 weeks before a person tests positive, so if the person has had unprotected sex (with ANYONE) in the last 6 weeks that should be the rule. Straight men on the DL are FAR more dangerous in terms of HIV risk than either openly gay or homeless people.

If they test all blood why cant any body give blood? Say a gay person has a rare blood type that someone else needs but he cant give it just because he is gay, which would have been tested anyway? Doesn't make sense. Once again America... Once again.

Can nobody realize why they would turn gay people away? Look, if there's a higher percentage of 'contaminated' blood from gay people, then it would make sense to turn them away depending on how high the risk. Regardless if you can test the blood after you've taken it, when you realize the blood is no good, you've just wasted time and money for the entire process up until that point. Turning away gays lowers the odds of wasted time and money. How is that so hard to see for some people?

Being gay is not the same as having unprotected sex. It might seem reasonable to turn away people who had risky sex, regardless of their sexual orientation.

@BjoernarEricSven No, it's not. Why? Because I'm sure a high percentage of those black men are gay. Out of those who test positive for HIV/AIDS, the MAJORITY (over half) are GAY. Breaking down the percentages of those gays is pretty redundant. The majority of them might be black or Hispanic, ...but, the HIGHEST RISK is from those who are gay. Look, a black guy walks in with less than 50% chance he's got AIDS, he gets to donate. ...if a gay guy walks in with MORE than a 50% chance, no go.
