For GODS SAKE YOU CLASSIC FANBOYS LISTEN UP! I have played through every single mainstream Sonic game so far except Sonic Coulours and Black Knight. Sonic 1,2,3,knuckles,CD,3D blast,Adventure,Adv. 2, Advance 1,2,3, Heroes,Shadow,06,Secret Rings,Both versions of Unleashed,Black Knight, Generations Demo, and out of those, the Genesis games are the most meh, Secret rings is the worst and Adventure 2 is the best. The Genesis ones are just running to the next level with some sweet music playing. End.
The difference is that Sonic Mega Drive games were great for their time, whereas these games are very average. Put them side by side and yeah the newer games might offer a more enjoyable experience to some. Games age. What a lot of us want is for Sonic to replicate the pure platforming experience of the older 2D games for the newer generation. Like Mario was able to do. Hes done it in patches in Adventure, and Colours etc. Maybe the new Sonic game next year will offer this.

IGN grew up with the Genesis and Super Nintendo, so they ended up being idealists. They think that every game that strays from ideals is a bad game. I honestly think that isn't true. I've played the original Sonic games, and once I played this game, I found that it felt pretty much like the original games in the daytime stages, and found the nighttime stages pretty relaxed, so I had a chance to take a break from that fast paced action, and still be able to plow through enemies. 8.5/10
@GrueRaaaaar When I was a kid, Sonic 3 was my life. That didn't stop me from loving Unleashed. The funny thing, watching their review for the Dark Knight made me want to play the game instead of shy away from it.

Now the Sonic Adventure games were "okay" I guess, but in Sonic Unleashed the majority of the gameplay is spent playing as Werehog. Sonic Unleashed's Sonic levels are INFERIOR to the Sonic Adventure levels. Most of them play alike: run, fall in badly placed pits on 1st playthrough. 2nd playthrough: hold boost and effortlessly win.
The 1st time you play a Sonic Unleashed level, you'd probably just randomly fall into a pit that was out of view (ESPECIALLY when its 2d.) Of course, once you remember the pits, it's only a matter of holding "boost" through the entire level and jumping every once in a while.
Even if the controls were "somewhat" tolerable, 90% of the levels play the same. Boost, go, pit, repeat. Sonic Adventure games had somewhat-decent level design
Actually, it was proven that by checking trophy statistics, the vast majority of gamers that played Sonic Unleashed actually quit the game before even progressing 1/4 of the game.
Funny, how most gamers that actually purchased the game got rid of it by the 3rd level, according to their trophy data.

IGN's hatred of Sonic Unleashed matches gamer's complaints in game communities.
I could go into detail on a TECHNICAL level why the design of modern Sonic games are inferior. Guess what? I'd even be copy-pasting statements from "Yuji Naka" as "Yoshi Hashimoto" who explained this in several blogs and interviews.
Many of the factors Naka and Hashimoto described as major flaws are present in Sonic-Unleashed, but much worst. In the end, you have a Sonic game that is inferior to the Sonic Adventure titles.
Sonic Adventure 2 did have the unwanted treasure hunting and worthless shooting, but atleast you actually moved FORWARD after getting past those atrocious levels. In Sonic Unleashed, if you "rush through" a horrible Werehog level, you are forced to play it AGAIN for medal collecting.
That alone is enough to dislike the game more than SA2. SA2 was controversial when it released, and the Sonic levels "hold your hand" too much. But it's a heck of a lot better than Sonic Unleashed.
If you like modern Sonic games fine, that's your opinion. My responses occur in vids like this when the person directly insults the one who says the game sucks.
IGN's complaints of Sonic Unleashed are similar to the complaints people had in gaming-forums towards the game. When IGN is "insulted" for having a point of view, the thought "since I agree with them, what does that make me" comes to mind.
But it's bad if something is disliked by all but a certain group of fans.

In the 1990s, Sonic's popularity was incredible.3 Hearing the words were "common" everyday, and normally in a positve manner. Sonic's popularity rubbed shoulders with Mickey Mouse at a point.
Sonic is now reduced to the laughing stock of the gaming industry. Less people even want to "touch" these new games anymore. There's no way a TRUE fan would accept...

I sound like Star Wars fanboys? The difference between this and Star Wars, is that Star Wars continues to be popular and well-recepted. Offending "Star Wars" fans isn't too harmful as long as the vast majority find this enjoyable.
Sonic is a different case. Gamers in general: longtime and non-Sonic fans find modern Sonic games atrocious. A TRUE Sonic fan would actually recognize there is a problem. I doubt you came from the Genesis era. Unless you mean "you were born then."

Star Wars fans are upset because of story-related reasons. Not so much complaining about the movie itself, but contradictions or "explanations" in the canon story.

So, as I said, its more than just hardcore fans from the past that have a problem. The quality of Sonic games have disgusted the gaming community, PERIOD. If you are a true Sonic fan, there is no way you can brush this off.

Speaking of the HD version, you'd be HARD-PRESSED to find a non-Sonic fan that even BOTHERED to complete Sonic Unleashed. Almost anyone that even BOTHERS to defend the game is an existing Sonic fan (who previously defended games.)

I could go into detail on a TECHNICAL level why the design of modern Sonic games are inferior. Guess what? I'd even be copy-pasting statements from "Yuji Naka" as "Yoshi Hashimoto" who explained this in several blogs and interviews.
Many of the factors Naka and Hashimoto described as major flaws are present in Sonic-Unleashed, but much worst. In the end, you have a Sonic game that is inferior to the Sonic Adventure titles.

Sonic Adventure 2 did have the unwanted treasure hunting and worthless shooting, but atleast you actually moved FORWARD after getting past those atrocious levels. In Sonic Unleashed, if you "rush through" a horrible Werehog level, you are forced to play it AGAIN for medal collecting.
That alone is enough to dislike the game more than SA2. SA2 was controversial when it released, and the Sonic levels "hold your hand" too much. But it's a heck of a lot better than Sonic Unleashed.

If you like modern Sonic games fine, that's your opinion. My responses occur in vids like this when the person directly insults the one who says the game sucks.
IGN's complaints of Sonic Unleashed are similar to the complaints people had in gaming-forums towards the game. When IGN is "insulted" for having a point of view, the thought "since I agree with them, what does that make me" comes to mind.
But it's bad if something is disliked by all but a certain group of fans.
