I drink coffee like once a month cuz I prefer tea. But to get up in mornings I thought coffee would help. Do u think it would be safe for me to have a cup of coffee a day with 1 and a half teaspoons of coffee powdery stuff and a sugar cube?
A cup of coffee has two to three times as much caffeine as a cup of tea. For some people, that amount may well be enough to produce addiction.
I can't recommend relying on a drug to "help you get up in the mornings." A healthier solution is to eat nutritious foods, get regular exercise, and get plenty of sleep.
I can't recommend added sugar to foods or beverages, either. Sugar will mess you up; it's a direct assault on your health and longevity.
funny how people get high on uppers all day and then i smoke some weed after work and i'm the one that gets fired. fucking drug addicts you are paying 8 bucks for a cup of coffee at starbuck, then going to work, then taking more uppers when you get there, all of you feeding on it saying ugh i need a cup of coffee!!!. i don't need to smoke, its just relaxing....but you people NEED coffee to function...pathetic!
We are a very confused society when it comes to drugs, yes. Our legal classifications have nothing to do with scientific knowledge - or morality - and everything to do with protecting pharmaceutical profits, fueling prison industry profits, and persecuting minorities.
One of my fondest hopes is to live long enough to see a rational drug policy adopted in the US. But it doesn't look like I'll get my wish.
@infinitewobdrahpa your perception of coffee is way off using caffeine responsibly, being a senior in high school i drink coffee almost every morning before school, it helps me focus so i can get the most out of my learning experience. I also most weed everyday i also have a cup of coffee after smoking cause i usually crash at the end from smoking and i like to play pick up basketball and go to the weight room. Who told you coffee was 8 bucks i get a medium coffee from dunkin donuts for 2.14$.
Well I am a Caffeine junkie, Full blown, I drink about 2 pots 20 cups a day and on a rare occasion 3 pots. Been having anxiety and mania because of it. I have been aware the coffee was doing it. I get the mood swings, feel stoned, paranoid. my thoughts are no longer clear by the end of the day of coffee binging. just like the coffee kid from South Park "Tweek" So this has gone on too long. I have decided to detox. Today is my last day. Wish me luck
@Urgelt Thank you, I just never considered coffee to be this powerful a drug. I think we all got into it for the jolt of energy, I no longer get the positive effects. I been to the doctors and none of them even thought of a caffeine addiction, It never came up. So I have some time off from work, And I stocked up on juices and water and tylenol. Took the coffee pot out of the house. So I think I am ready. I will let you guys know how I progress.
Careful with that Tylenol. It's terribly toxic to your liver, and the toxic effect accumulates, so if you're taking it regularly for weeks, you can get a very, very bad outcome. It's just a matter of time before it gets yanked from the market, I think.
It's too bad marijuana remains banned (for reasons I won't get into here), because it's just about the safest analgesic you could hope for, and a low dose provides considerable relief from pain.

@Urgelt 2 weeks and going strong. Now I am scared shitless of this stuff. I am mad at the doctors because they over looked it. Feeling great. I have not felt this good in a long time. The more time that passes the better I feel.
I think it takes months, not weeks, to recover from the physical addiction, and the cravings can persist for several years, honestly. I cringed every time I smelled coffee for a few years after I quit. But if you can tough out the first two weeks, you're definitely in the category of people who can get through the entire withdrawal period. You've got the strength of will for it.

And yes, energy drinks are 'potent and effective,' until drug tolerance creeps in and requires the addict to keep upping his dose to get the same benefit.
@Urgelt I found your video very informative, but I must say that the caffeine article on Wikipedia seems to have been scrubbed of information speaking negatively of the drug. I visited it after going to the CaffeineAwareness website, expecting to see more of the same, but the Wiki article basically does very little to point out the problems with using it.
The fall-back is a search engine. Try searching with these terms: "caffeine side effects". You'll have to ignore sites sponsored by the food and drug industries (which are not objective sources of information), and zoom in on consumer health and science sites.
Usually drink coke and Monster energy drinks I don't get the migraines and such all the time but I occasionally get them. I notice people always complaining about crashing after drinking a monster and whatnot. I always drink water when I have my caffeine and I always make sure I eat something when I have a monster. Seems to work quite well. I consider caffeine a body fuel that burns itself out fast, You have to have a slower burning fuel to supplement it to prevent the crashing. Great vid!
Good video.I have been caffeine free for almost a year and feel I am in control now.That includes chocolate or anything that has caffeine in it.Before I would be off and on pepsi and coke , always trying to quit but back at it again and then feeling like crap.Quitting caffeine is the best thing I ever did.Also my nail biting went away which I did since I was a kid.Hope this helps someone out there.
Caffeine, like many addictive drugs, produces an effect called 'drug tolerance.' Your body responds less to a given dose over time. If you keep your dose constant, eventually you'll feel very little from the drug of benefit to you. If you allow the dose to rise, you'll get side-effects of increasing severity.
You may be comfortable with your addiction for now. But it may cause problems for you down the road.
At the peak of my consumption, if I am remembering correctly, I might expect to consume three or four cups of coffee, plus a few more caffeinated sodas at lunch and at the end of the day. As the migraines intensified, I took prescription drugs with caffeine in them which heaped even more of the drug into my system.
My consumption wasn't as extreme as that of some of the commenters on this video, but it was enough to produce serious, quality-of-life-destroying side effects.
My addiction was not so much coffee, but diet sodas that contain caffeine. Is it possible I'm just addicted to aspartame??
I don't miss the caffeine as bad as I thought I would. Now that I'm on crystal light, maybe my addiction was/is really aspartame. Diet sodas have aspartame, right?
There is controversy surrounding the question of whether aspartame is addictive.
Many governments, including the US, have been (in my view) corrupted by industry money, lobbyists and the revolving door, which puts industry employees in sensitive government positions. The message coming from industry and its allies is that aspartame is safe.
Animal studies tell a different story. Aspartame has many drug-like and toxic effects.
Most diet sodas do contain aspartame. I recommend, 'avoid.'
I think, delrashid1, it's only a matter of time before aspartame is removed from the market. Years, no doubt; yet almost every year, some university completes a study of aspartame, and the evidence is mounting against it.
My guess is that aspartame may be addictive. I don't think it's as addictive as caffeine (but I have no data to back up my guess). I'm more concerned with its neurotoxicity, its effects on gestation, and its carcinogenicity.
I feel GREAT! I am more focused, not as agitated. I have never drank so much water in my entire life.
However, I'm concerned about my potential aspartame addiction by drinking Crystal Light. I may need to dig deeper and find out what I'm really putting in my system.
I'm proud to say that I am totally caffeine free. Green teas have helped a great deal. For my sweet tooth, crystal light (fruit punch) does the trick. I was completely addicted to Diet Pepsi. Yuk!

I'm glad you're free of caffeine. I have bad news for you, however.
Crystal light contains aspartame and acesulfame potassium, both known carcinogens. Aspartame is also a psychoactive drug and a neurotoxin. Coloring agents used in Crystal Light are also carcinogenic in animal studies.
The only non-calorie sweetener I can endorse is stevia. The rest are simply too dangerous for humans to consume safely.
Thanx,I feel like I'm not alone now.I have drunk too much coffee for ten years since I started Uni.Over the past few years I have developed sore joints all over and more recently, stomach pain.I have withdrawn from 6-8 mugs each day slowly and am now down to half a mug daily.I have never felt sicker or more alone..massive back pain,leg pain,sick stomach,weakness,anxiety,insomnia.Funny I don't crave it now..it's deadly stuff.It's Day 8 and I will never put myself thru this again. Give children as much sugar and caffeine as they can ingest -- then when behavioral problems set in, diagnoze them with ADD or Bipolar; how can you not make money with this strategy?
Sounds like Jaun Valdez has victimized you my friend -- seriously, I've gone 8 days allowing myself to drink water only (and still eat). I feel good, but man do I feel bad.
It can take a couple of months to get past the worst of it, though that seems to vary among different individuals.
It's been three decades since I quit, and the smell of fresh coffee still hits me hard in the gut. It's still a craving, but at least the withdrawal symptoms are far, far in the past. I'm glad for that, at least.
Thank you! I bought a wonderful Jasmine flower green tea. It's one of those teas where the dried flower bud opens up when you pour in hot water. I added 1/2 packet of sweetener and it was such a treat!!! Who knew this could be so delicious!
I've only had one caffeinated drink today. This is a miracle for me! Slight headache, but nothing Tylenol can't fix.
I'll suggest you do some planning and reading before you start, to maximize your chances of success. Like, know what you'll drink and lay in supplies (recommended: stevia-sweetened herbal teas.) Choose a time when feeling low for a few weeks won't interfere much with work, school or important projects. Learn about withdrawal symptoms and how to cope with them.
Sleep alone won't make people think you're an addict. But using pills to attain sleep is a different matter. That's dangerous, if you do it as a regular habit.
Congrats on doing this.I know it wasn't easy.I work ten hour night shifts and take care of my one year old in the mornings.I drink at least a liter of Diet Dew when I am working.If I don't have it, I am super groggy.I cannot wait until I can quit this job and give it up.I have thought about getting the carbonated water.I think I will buy some and try drinking that instead when work isn't busy.Thank you for posting this.
Carbonated water is harmless; diet soda isn't. It's more than the caffeine; artificial sugar substitutes are outrageous poisons. The FDA has let us down, badly, by failing to protect us against them.
Once i drank two energy drinks and five cups of what i thought to be decaffinated coffee. When i got home my ipod had run out of battery but i was no paranoid and not thinking clearly that i thought it had broken down

if you have too much of anything, it will harm you.. learn to moderate everything in life and you will be happy.. denying yourself from things is also wrong because by denying things you want it destroys the purpose of its all..
If you're looking for brainboost alternative to caffeine like drug/herb/amino aicds. Please stick to caffeine since there's not enough evidence, research and safety of any of the other drugs. But really we don't know everything about caffeine either so the best proven way to live healthy is to get all the nutrients from fruits and vegetables rather than pills and stay away or limit caffeine and alcohol.
I think caffeine is a gateway drug as well. After I developed tolerance to caffeine I looked for alternative 'drugs' or nootropics. All over the internet they talk about how safe some nootropics are. So I bought Acetyl-l-carnitine and L-tyrosine and tried them. But I think they are all scams since I had second thoughts and researched further and it seems like acetyl-l-carnitine could cause pro-oxidation so I quit both straight away. So please be careful.
The term "gateway drug" is not a scientific term, but a political one. I try to avoid using it.
Seeking to self-medicate oneself through drugs is not being "careful." It is the very definition of dangerously self-harmful behavior.
The problem I'm addressing here isn't that one. The problem I'm addressing is misinformation. We're told caffeine isn't a drug at all: it's harmless, not addictive, beneficial, good for us. Those are outright lies, and believing them causes harm.
I just realized that I'm addicted to green tea. I thought it was helping me study and I kept on drinking like coffee. I felt nauseous few times so I know I'm drinking too much. Ironically in the end caffeine made me more unproductive anyway.
More than a decade after I quit caffeine, I cautiously introduced green tea into my daily routine. I use about 3-4 green teabags per week; otherwise I drink water and herbal teas. This amount of consumption, i have found, is neither addictive nor produces noticeable physiological effects.
Green tea has less than half the caffeine in a cup of coffee; but you can, if you consume it excessively, addict yourself. I recommend substituting a variety of herbals, if you are able.
For someone who enjoys variety (like me), herbals are great; there are so many different flavors to discover.
I still like green tea, too. I'm just very cautious about it. I do not want to readdict myself,. I make sure I haven't by taking breaks from it and seeing if any hint of withdrawal symptoms appear. Thus far, they have not, so for my body weight, 3-4 tea bags per week seems pretty safe.
@Urgelt This may be a random question but do you think there's a link between caffeine and receding hairlines or hair loss? This has been on my mind for quite some time and I can't find what I'm looking for on-line.
If there is a hair loss effect from caffeine, I suspect it must be weak.
Most hair loss is associated with male pattern baldness, which is genetic. If you want to identify other causes of baldness, the smart thing is to look at populations unaffected by male pattern baldness.
That means looking at trends among women, mostly.
Women lose hair readily when exposed to some toxins (notably cancer drugs). But I know of no correlation between caffeine consumption and hair loss in women.
@bryanaa24 - Caffeine addiction is the last of your worries with such a high consumption. Most sodas are, as we all know, jam packed with sugar. If you keep going at that rate, diabetes will definitely ensue.
I picked up caffeine during university to cope with exams and study. I've found nothing so far to make me want to quit it. It's helped me incredibly and improved my life, and I've never had a side effect from it that I would consider as negative. I know I'm addicted (because I feel tired and without motivation if I go a day without it), but I don't mind it as long as I can keep it coming. I'm sorry it triggered your migraines, but different things have different effects on different people.
You're quite right, drugs affect different people differently.
The whole story remains to unfold, however, regarding the effect of the drug on your life. Right now, you've only reached Chapter 2.
Don't underestimate the drug. Between unfolding drug tolerance, its affect on sleep, its ability to change your personality, and its many other potential side-effects, it's dangerous - even if, at present, you're unaware of any negatives.
@Urgelt I'm sure my personality has already changed. I know the effects it has on me, and as a fairly educated person I also understand the chemical processes so I know what it's doing to me, so I know it's not permanent. I think you've had separate problems that added to your caffeine addiction that made you believe the caffeine was the culprit. Judging from your story you also abused it (which I'm not).
"Abuse" is a loaded term, and however it is defined (variously by different people, I'm sure), it's a judgment which does not shed light on the physiological and psychological effects of the drug. That's where my focus is.
We should not think that an addict's symptoms are going to remain forever in a steady state. Drug addiction is dynamic and symptoms can easily worsen. What seems tolerable to you now may become intolerable for you later. Or perhaps not; but that was my own experience.
@Urgelt As for coca cola, I know the story. I used to drink it instead of water, and was in hospital for two weeks with a pre-ulcer condition caused almost directly by it. I quit it, but once again it was a matter of abuse. It won't kill anyone in moderation, and neither will coffee. If you drink gallons and gallons of it, of course you will do damage to your heart and your personality.

Don't fall prey to a misconception. LSD is not "concentrated ergot." LSD is chemically different and has its own distinct constellation of physiological effects.

@Urgelt I'm 20 years old, I consider myself addicted to : Cigaretes, alcohool and caffeine. Well about alcohool, I dont use to get drunk, if theres a birthday party or a fiesta lets say about twice on a month, maybe I get drunk only once, and in that once, I not that drunk... i can walk i do controll my bodys comands but yes not perfectly, but its just ok if i can say it this way.
@Urgelt The point is: I use to drink 50 to 70 grams of wine wich my favorite one has got 11,5% Vol. of Alcohool, 200 Grams of coffy ( eanuf strong coffy) and 3 to 5 cigarettes before goein to sleep, and i don't need anything in the next mornin, evetualy some cigaretes. I use to "re-energize" me this way only at night so I can sleep.
@Urgelt I dont really have plans about that, I just feeled free to share this, but what I am affraid of is that I dont want to try leavin them and than gettin other drugs in time that I'm tryin to quit them . But I was thinkin'... When I'm gonna try to quit them, what if I'm gonna use sleeping pills.... hummmm... or maybe slimmin' pills to keep me energized..

mine is really different to the other posts i read on here but im trying to cut down because i dont have headaches with it i do if i drink too much like a cup of coffee and a rocket choclate (caffeine truffle) and i am still jittery on my starting dose but i always need it this is some of the time if i dont have coffee i have 4 cans of cola usually im trying to cut down to 1 pop or coffee a day
You might find that you like stevia-sweetened herbal and green tea better than soft drinks and coffee. (I sure do.) Tea and water are much, much healthier, and if it tastes good to you, it's a no-brainer.
When i gave up coffee, everybody said i had a complete personality change. However i was bored and depressed all the time. Now i drink coffee again, people tell me it's asshole juice and that i'm not as nice, but i feel way better! My mind is keen and sharp, and i can study for hours.
If the effects you describe were the only effects caffeine produced, I'd probably still be drinking coffee myself.
But it isn't limited to grouchiness and stimulation, alas.
And what is more, it's addictive... and, worse, there's drug tolerance to consider. In order to keep getting the same level of benefit, you'll have to keep upping the dose... until the dose is very destructive, indeed.
Or you can keep the dose the same, and find yourself addicted without much of a payback at all.
It's way oversimplified, like nearly all popular articles about drugs or nutrition.
Here's my take.
Lots and lots of vegetable foods (especially tropical) provide many, many micronutrients which are beneficial. Coffee is one. Some of these vegetable food sources also shovel drugs into us. Coffee is one.
A person on an industrial diet is starved of micronutrients, in general. They're sick. Feeding *anything* with micronutrients in it to that person will have health benefits.
There is life after you end a caffeine addiction (in my opinion, a better life), and you *can* get out of bed without coffee. It's not so hard; when you sleep without the drug in your system, you sleep better and are more rested when you get up.
Of course it's all much easier if you're routinely getting enough sleep.
If you are routinely skimping on sleep, you'll develop other health problems over the long haul. Google "sleep deprivation" and see how many disorders are linked to it.
@Urgelt i think because of the coffee i have really late nights and get up early, so do skimp a lot on sleep. i've cut down from 3 cups to 2 cups a day, and feel a lot better for it, but last time i tried to cut down to only 1 cup a day, i felt worse for it. You got me thinking about trying it again though.
I'm 16 in high school and I drink 16 oz of dark coffee each morning, and then usually have a diet coke or diet mt dew or even an energy drink like amp after school. I get headaches if I don't drink it. But I did quit it for a while by switching to earl grey tea and eventually to white tea and then I was fine. It's not like cocaine or something. Caffeine is a drug which can easily be overcome if you pay attention to what u r consuming
Cocaine works in the same way, and it's possible to use it, develop a mild addiction, and back off.
It's also possible with either drug to develop a deep, life-changing addiction. Cocaine addiction is worse primarily because of its legal status, cost, and social stigma.
Severe caffeine addiction can produce profound symptoms, not the least of them being personality and behavior changes. The Wikipedia article on caffeine has more info.
The routine of waking up in the morning and the feeling of essentially having that 1st cup of coffee before doing anything is actually a withdrawal symptom from not getting enough caffeine while sleeping. Hence, coffee addiction it is.
I'm 17 years old, a senior in high school. Every weekday during the school year I'll drink either a half a cup or cup of coffee before school in the mornings. Generally, I'll abstain from coffee on the weekends (probably because I get more sleep) with no side effects. Coffee is also my main source of caffeine; i.e., I don't consume other caffeinated substances. However, if I don't drink my morning coffee before school, I'll usually have a headache by the end of the day. Is this an addiction?
I don't know if it is, redsoxfan713. You're dealing with pretty low doses. Not insignificant doses, though.
Different people are differently sensitive to the addictive properties of caffeine (or any addictive drug).
If you find yourself feeling the need to increase your morning dose in order to ward off weekday headaches, or feel the need to consume caffeine on the weekends for the same reason, then I would conclude that you are probably edging towards full-blown addiction.

I was diagnosed with ADD because I drew in class. Medication didn't help, but I got good grades so the matter was dropped. When I became an adult I started drinking coffee, 1-2 cups a day, thinking it'd help me be alert. Despite everyone saying so, I noticed that, rather, it makes me more restless and tense. Tea will help you focus, caffeine just stimulates adrenaline. Fortunately I'm not addicted, but I like the taste and smell of coffee so I'm trying to find decaf. Hard to find here in Japan.
@Urgelt whatever, having a nice cup of joe now my friend, i couldn't deal with it after two days of taporing off, it's a beautiful thing, my friend, LOL, my granny smoked cigarettes and drank coffee the day she died, of course she ate her vegetables...it's all good, i'm just being honest..
You are an excellent story teller, and you're very wise. I feel honored to listen to your experiences. Anyway, as far as soda goes, I don't really like the taste. I like water more than anything, but lately I've been getting hooked to caffeine in the form of a pill--Excedrin. See, even as a kid I would get these headaches, and the only thing that helps make it go away is that pill. I'm also starting to drink coffee...it's the only thing that gets rid of my headaches and makes me animated
There's no telling what gave you that first headache. But once you started taking caffeine for it, you may have fallen into a trap.
Caffeine, in the short term, dilates the blood vessels in the brain for a few hours. It eases some kinds of headaches.
But the drug has longer term effects, too - and one of them can be to bring on the very headaches which you use the drug to solve. That happened to me, and I let it get very bad before catching on.
well i lasted about 3 weeks completely off caffeine and i had a constant headache every single day not to mention i was feeling very dull and down in the dumps. So im back on the wagon, or off the wagon, hell whatever it is. I Been pounding energy drinks and cups of coffee like madd. lol caffeine is one hell of a drug ill tell you what. ANd it is very psychoactive, ive found that out after indulging in the first cup of coffee with such a low tolerance.it basically got me high...im wired
Quitting isn't easy, that's for sure. And you're right about caffeine's psychoactivity.
You might want to think about the problem as similar to learning to ride a horse. Falling off is pretty common. It doesn't mean you can't get back on the horse and try again.
Cold turkey isn't for everyone. Perhaps tapering off will work better for you?
A LOT of people don't even realize that caffeine is a drug. I have felt similar withdraws from my pain medication: Oxycodine, but people around me fail to realize that Oxycodine isn't the only drug with a bad withdrawal so they tell me "you gotta get yourself off of this". Oxycodine is the only drug that can make my life bearable by decreasing both my chronic pains and my breakthrough pains. People tell me to just use advil/tylenol but even at a dose of 1g it does nothing for me.

One of these days, we really need to acknowledge that among the cannabinoids are drugs that are safer than any of the pain medications currently available by prescription, they are not addictive, their analgesic properties compare favorably with opiates, and they're cheap to produce.. Which is not to say there are no side effects, but we do need them in the medical system.
@Urgelt In the past I have tried Marinol, but at first it didn't seem to work so i raised the dosage... Bad idea, I wen't into psychosis, as Marinol has a very high THC content (stronger than actual Marijuana). When I lowered the dosage and took it on a day to day basis I began to notice that I had less pain overall. The only reason I stopped is because I knew no doctor would prescribe it to me as I was not a cancer patient and I am only 18. They only care about cancer nowadays :(
Urgelt, i hope that you will have more free time in the future to share your knowledge and experiences with us. This video helped, and inspired me to put down the bean. Its been 4 days now. Its also been 4 days of a constant nagging headache that is only relieved by sleeping. On a good note ive noticed a slight reduction in anxiety which is a great relief to me.I was also less scattered and reckless at work. Caffeine seems to have been overstimulating me to the point of not being a good thing.
Something about my physiology is different; I never experienced much anxiety or sleep deprivation from consuming caffeine. Just those awful migraine headaches, which grew steadily more intolerable and frequent while I grew ever more frantic for a solution.
But the experience of most caffeine addicts seems to mirror yours, not mine. Anxiety is one of the most common symptoms inflicted by the drug.
If you can hang in there and stay off the drug, the payoff will be even better.
this past semester, I was drinking about ten cups of coffee several cups of espresso daily along with two or three caffeine pills, and it wasn't uncommon for me to have at least two monsters in the evening. I finally had to cut back because I lost 18 pounds in just a couple of weeks, and I was getting headaches all the time.
Valerian tea is a sedative, and a rather potent one. It's one of the less safe herbal teas you could choose, and not one to consume often. There are also some troubling indications of addictivity in the literature.
My advice is to pursue variety in herbal teas, and it's more fun, too. There are dozens and dozens of great flavors to enjoy.
Valerian is a "downer." Caffeine is an "upper." Mixing and matching these drugs, and administering them to yourself without a doctor's involvement, might not be one of the safer things you could do to yourself.
It might actually be quite dangerous, in fact, depending on doses and other variables,
Efficacy and safety aren't the same thing, you understand?
it is possible to taper off caffeine without the pain of going cold turkey. last time I got off coffee i made a direct conversion to matcha green tea (which is not a cheap thing) matcha is green tea leaves ground into a powder and has ~ 30mg caffeine per 1 tsp. i cut off coffee and then used matcha at a dose dose (1 TBSP=90mg caf) and slowly cut it to 1/4 tsp/day over 3 weeks. i have migraines my whole life and was able to use this method to get off coffee without disaster.
There is no way to end an addiction without withdrawal symptoms, I think. Tapering reduces the symptoms but they occur over a longer period of time than with cold turkey. A wash, on average.
But you aren't average, you're you. One or the other of those methods may work better for you than the other.
It may take a few months before you notice a change in your migraine patterns. Be aware.
I've taken caffeine pills for the hell of it. Bad idea. I took 500mg and then went for a spin in my car. After about an hour I became sensitive to light, my hands started tingling, and then I blew chunks all over the dashboard. Caffeine sucks. For energy I suggest Ephedrine or Ephedra products. Those have worked for me a lot better than Caffeine, without the shitty feeling.
For energy, I suggest adequate sleep, good nutrition and exercise. Ephedrine or other drugs can pep you up in the short term, but the long term is always grim.
I've been drinking green tea lately myself, but I find myself worrying about the caffeine contained inside of it. Lately, I've found that when I'm parched, I crave green tea, not being sated by a drink of water. Am I in danger of caffeine addiction from green tea?
It's hard to become addicted to green tea, I think, but probably not impossible.
Here's what you can do to virtually eliminate the risk: - Use one tea bag per 18 oz mug of water. (I actually like the taste of it this way, using stevia for sweetening.) - Drink lots of water along with your tea. (Green tea is a diuretic, so you'll need more fluids.) - Mix up your teas. 3-4 green tea bags per week, the rest herbals.
Do that, and I think the risk of addiction is vanishingly small.
I've never really seen someone just honestly explain the problems they had with caffeine. Caffeine is just seen as such a normal harmless thing. I guess I might just be overly sensitive to it or something, because I can relate to the symptoms you mentioned. The hardest part to me of just not drinking any caffeine is giving up the energy boost it gives me. But, I'm starting to think my energy levels are actually below what they would be not drinking caffeine. I'll try switching to tea.
I think the long term effects outweigh the short-term gains.
I also think that most people are vulnerable to both the damaging side effects and addiction. Caffeine is highly addictive - which is the reason corporations love to put it in their products. It makes for repeat customers.
I mostly use herbal teas now, but 3 or 4 teabags of caffeinated tea per week is on my menu, too, sweetened with stevia extract powder. It's not enough to produce any symptoms, and I do enjoy it.
@Urgelt I've tried substituting tea that has caffeine, its okay for a bit. But I always wind up right back to drinking pots of coffee. Sometimes I'll fill a big mug, like for beer, with coffee. Friends or family give me a facial expression of ” you've got to be kidding me.” Thanks for the info, but especially, just speaking plainly about how you feel about it. I might go with decaff tea, drinking any seems to lead me back to drinking a lot.
Man, I've kicked alcohol (after 10 years) and have shot up coke (as in cacaine) heroin, done pretty much anything put in front of me. My first trip was 2 hits of acid in ISS anyhoots....I've haven't yet been able to kick my coffee / energy drink addiction. It's an 'INVISIBLE ADDICTION'...as in an addiction thats socially acceptable and even desirable (lets you concentrate on monotonous, boring work).

Now days I don't think about it much really but to be totally honest I can't remember the last time I went to school, work or even training without it.

Hello Urgelt. Im a 19 year old guy who drinks alot of cofee. My addiction started of when I was 13 and ive drank coffee for the first time. It was at my grandmas house. I didn't really like the taste of it then. But as the years passed on and I drank caffaine indirect via coke and candy it became harder and harder to not see the problem.
It eventually come to an point where I needed to quit beacuse I was dependant on having that cup of coffee and I was consuming alot maybe as much as 10 cups.

It's an addictive drug that is highly psychoactive (part of its psychoactivity is mood elevation), so it really shouldn't be a surprise to see behaviors we often associate with illegal drugs.
Hey great video, I've seen it three times now. I'm 19 and I have a really important question, hopefully you can answer. I know I'm a caffeine addict (2-3 cups a day, black) but everyone keeps telling me I'm overreacting. It's only been like this for me for two years and I really want to quit, do you really think I should quit cold turkey?

A cup of coffee has two to three times as much caffeine as a cup of tea. For some people, that amount may well be enough to produce addiction.
I can't recommend relying on a drug to "help you get up in the mornings." A healthier solution is to eat nutritious foods, get regular exercise, and get plenty of sleep.
I can't recommend added sugar to foods or beverages, either. Sugar will mess you up; it's a direct assault on your health and longevity.

Well I am a Caffeine junkie, Full blown, I drink about 2 pots 20 cups a day and on a rare occasion 3 pots. Been having anxiety and mania because of it. I have been aware the coffee was doing it. I get the mood swings, feel stoned, paranoid. my thoughts are no longer clear by the end of the day of coffee binging. just like the coffee kid from South Park "Tweek" So this has gone on too long. I been to the doctors and none of them even thought of a caffeine addiction, It never came up. So I have some time off from work, And I stocked up on juices and water and tylenol. Careful with that Tylenol. It's terribly toxic to your liver, and the toxic effect accumulates, so if you're taking it regularly for weeks, you can get a very, very bad outcome. It's just a matter of time before it gets yanked from the market, I think.
It's too bad marijuana remains banned (for reasons I won't get into here), because it's just about the safest analgesic you could hope for, and a low dose provides considerable relief from pain.

I think it takes months, not weeks, to recover from the physical addiction, and the cravings can persist for several years, honestly. I cringed every time I smelled coffee for a few years after I quit. But if you can tough out the first two weeks, you're definitely in the category of people who can get through the entire withdrawal period. You've got the strength of will for it.

Stomach problems are only a small part of the negative effects. Check out Wikipedia's article on caffeine for a plain-English explanation of the drug's physiological (and even psychological) effects..
And yes, energy drinks are 'potent and effective,' until drug tolerance creeps in and requires the addict to keep upping his dose to get the same benefit.

Usually drink coke and Monster energy drinks I don't get the migraines and such all the time but I occasionally get them. I notice people always complaining about crashing after drinking a monster and whatnot. I always drink water when I have my caffeine and I always make sure I eat something when I have a monster. Seems to work quite well. I consider caffeine a body fuel that burns itself out fast, You have to have a slower burning fuel to supplement it to prevent the crashing. Great vid!

Good video.I have been caffeine free for almost a year and feel I am in control now.That includes chocolate or anything that has caffeine in it.Before I would be off and on pepsi and coke , always trying to quit but back at it again and then feeling like crap.Quitting caffeine is the best thing I ever did.Also my nail biting went away which I did since I was a kid.Hope this helps someone out there.

Remember, that's a snapshot.
Caffeine, like many addictive drugs, produces an effect called 'drug tolerance.' Your body responds less to a given dose over time. If you keep your dose constant, eventually you'll feel very little from the drug of benefit to you. If you allow the dose to rise, you'll get side-effects of increasing severity.
You may be comfortable with your addiction for now. But it may cause problems for you down the road.

At the peak of my consumption, if I am remembering correctly, I might expect to consume three or four cups of coffee, plus a few more caffeinated sodas at lunch and at the end of the day. As the migraines intensified, I took prescription drugs with caffeine in them which heaped even more of the drug into my system.
My consumption wasn't as extreme as that of some of the commenters on this video, but it was enough to produce serious, quality-of-life-destroying side effects.

There is controversy surrounding the question of whether aspartame is addictive.
Many governments, including the US, have been (in my view) corrupted by industry money, lobbyists and the revolving door, which puts industry employees in sensitive government positions. The message coming from industry and its allies is that aspartame is safe.
Animal studies tell a different story. Aspartame has many drug-like and toxic effects.
Most diet sodas do contain aspartame. I recommend, 'avoid.'

I think, delrashid1, it's only a matter of time before aspartame is removed from the market. Years, no doubt; yet almost every year, some university completes a study of aspartame, and the evidence is mounting against it.
My guess is that aspartame may be addictive. I don't think it's as addictive as caffeine (but I have no data to back up my guess). I'm more concerned with its neurotoxicity, its effects on gestation, and its carcinogenicity.

However, I'm concerned about my potential aspartame addiction by drinking Crystal Light. I may need to dig deeper and find out what I'm really putting in my system.

Now I guzzle water (and tea, mostly herbals, which is really just flavored water). Fortunate I am that the municipal water tastes fairly good.

I'm proud to say that I am totally caffeine free. Green teas have helped a great deal. For my sweet tooth, crystal light (fruit punch) does the trick. I was completely addicted to Diet Pepsi. Yuk!

I'm glad you're free of caffeine. I have bad news for you, however.
Crystal light contains aspartame and acesulfame potassium, both known carcinogens. Aspartame is also a psychoactive drug and a neurotoxin. Coloring agents used in Crystal Light are also carcinogenic in animal studies.
The only non-calorie sweetener I can endorse is stevia. The rest are simply too dangerous for humans to consume safely.

Thanx,I feel like I'm not alone now.I have drunk too much coffee for ten years since I started Uni.Over the past few years I have developed sore joints all over and more recently, stomach pain.I have withdrawn from 6-8 mugs each day slowly and am now down to half a mug daily.I have never felt sicker or more alone..massive back pain,leg pain,sick stomach,weakness,anxiety,insomnia.Funny I don't crave it now..it's deadly stuff.It's Day 8 and I will never put myself thru this again. I sympathize. It is bad, in the early period.
It can take a couple of months to get past the worst of it, though that seems to vary among different individuals.
It's been three decades since I quit, and the smell of fresh coffee still hits me hard in the gut. It's still a craving, but at least the withdrawal symptoms are far, far in the past. I'm glad for that, at least.

Thank you! I bought a wonderful Jasmine flower green tea. It's one of those teas where the dried flower bud opens up when you pour in hot water. I added 1/2 packet of sweetener and it was such a treat!!! Who knew this could be so delicious!
I've only had one caffeinated drink today. This is a miracle for me! Slight headache, but nothing Tylenol can't fix.

I'll suggest you do some planning and reading before you start, to maximize your chances of success. Like, know what you'll drink and lay in supplies (recommended: stevia-sweetened herbal teas.) Choose a time when feeling low for a few weeks won't interfere much with work, school or important projects. Learn about withdrawal symptoms and how to cope with them.

Congrats on doing this.I know it wasn't easy.I work ten hour night shifts and take care of my one year old in the mornings.I drink at least a liter of Diet Dew when I am working.If I don't have it, I am super groggy.I cannot wait until I can quit this job and give it up.I have thought about getting the carbonated water.I think I will buy some and try drinking that instead when work isn't busy.Thank you for posting this.

Carbonated water is harmless; diet soda isn't. It's more than the caffeine; artificial sugar substitutes are outrageous poisons. The FDA has let us down, badly, by failing to protect us against them.

If you're looking for brainboost alternative to caffeine like drug/herb/amino aicds. Please stick to caffeine since there's not enough evidence, research and safety of any of the other drugs. But really we don't know everything about caffeine either so the best proven way to live healthy is to get all the nutrients from fruits and vegetables rather than pills and stay away or limit caffeine and alcohol.

I think caffeine is a gateway drug as well. After I developed tolerance to caffeine I looked for alternative 'drugs' or nootropics. All over the internet they talk about how safe some nootropics are. So I bought Acetyl-l-carnitine and L-tyrosine and tried them. But I think they are all scams since I had second thoughts and researched further and it seems like acetyl-l-carnitine could cause pro-oxidation so I quit both straight away. So please be careful.

The term "gateway drug" is not a scientific term, but a political one. I try to avoid using it.
Seeking to self-medicate oneself through drugs is not being "careful." It is the very definition of dangerously self-harmful behavior.
The problem I'm addressing here isn't that one. The problem I'm addressing is misinformation. We're told caffeine isn't a drug at all: it's harmless, not addictive, beneficial, good for us. Those are outright lies, and believing them causes harm.

More than a decade after I quit caffeine, I cautiously introduced green tea into my daily routine. I use about 3-4 green teabags per week; otherwise I drink water and herbal teas. This amount of consumption, i have found, is neither addictive nor produces noticeable physiological effects.
Green tea has less than half the caffeine in a cup of coffee; but you can, if you consume it excessively, addict yourself. I recommend substituting a variety of herbals, if you are able.

For someone who enjoys variety (like me), herbals are great; there are so many different flavors to discover.
I still like green tea, too. I'm just very cautious about it. I do not want to readdict myself,. I make sure I haven't by taking breaks from it and seeing if any hint of withdrawal symptoms appear. Thus far, they have not, so for my body weight, 3-4 tea bags per week seems pretty safe.

@Urgelt This may be a random question but do you think there's a link between caffeine and receding hairlines or hair loss? This has been on my mind for quite some time and I can't find what I'm looking for on-line.

If there is a hair loss effect from caffeine, I suspect it must be weak.
Most hair loss is associated with male pattern baldness, which is genetic. If you want to identify other causes of baldness, the smart thing is to look at populations unaffected by male pattern baldness.
That means looking at trends among women, mostly.
Women lose hair readily when exposed to some toxins (notably cancer drugs). But I know of no correlation between caffeine consumption and hair loss in women.

@bryanaa24 - Caffeine addiction is the last of your worries with such a high consumption. Most sodas are, as we all know, jam packed with sugar. If you keep going at that rate, diabetes will definitely ensue.

I picked up caffeine during university to cope with exams and study. I've found nothing so far to make me want to quit it. It's helped me incredibly and improved my life, and I've never had a side effect from it that I would consider as negative. I know I'm addicted (because I feel tired and without motivation if I go a day without it), but I don't mind it as long as I can keep it coming. I'm sorry it triggered your migraines, but different things have different effects on different people.

You're quite right, drugs affect different people differently.
The whole story remains to unfold, however, regarding the effect of the drug on your life. Right now, you've only reached Chapter 2.
Don't underestimate the drug. Between unfolding drug tolerance, its affect on sleep, its ability to change your personality, and its many other potential side-effects, it's dangerous - even if, at present, you're unaware of any negatives.

I know the effects it has on me, and as a fairly educated person I also understand the chemical processes so I know what it's doing to me, so I know it's not permanent. I think you've had separate problems that added to your caffeine addiction that made you believe the caffeine was the culprit. Judging from your story you also abused it (which I'm not).

"Abuse" is a loaded term, and however it is defined (variously by different people, I'm sure), it's a judgment which does not shed light on the physiological and psychological effects of the drug. That's where my focus is.
We should not think that an addict's symptoms are going to remain forever in a steady state. Drug addiction is dynamic and symptoms can easily worsen. What seems tolerable to you now may become intolerable for you later. Or perhaps not; but that was my own experience.

@Urgelt As for coca cola, I know the story. I used to drink it instead of water, and was in hospital for two weeks with a pre-ulcer condition caused almost directly by it. I quit it, but once again it was a matter of abuse. It won't kill anyone in moderation, and neither will coffee. If you drink gallons and gallons of it, of course you will do damage to your heart and your personality.

Well about alcohool, I dont use to get drunk, if theres a birthday party or a fiesta lets say about twice on a month, maybe I get drunk only once, and in that once, I not that drunk... i can walk i do controll my bodys comands but yes not perfectly, but its just ok if i can say it this way.

@Urgelt The point is: I use to drink 50 to 70 grams of wine wich my favorite one has got 11,5% Vol. of Alcohool, 200 Grams of coffy ( eanuf strong coffy) and 3 to 5 cigarettes before goein to sleep, and i don't need anything in the next mornin, evetualy some cigaretes. I use to "re-energize" me this way only at night so I can sleep.

But I was thinkin'... When I'm gonna try to quit them, what if I'm gonna use sleeping pills.... hummmm... or maybe slimmin' pills to keep me energized..

mine is really different to the other posts i read on here but im trying to cut down because i dont have headaches with it i do if i drink too much like a cup of coffee and a rocket choclate (caffeine truffle) and i am still jittery on my starting dose but i always need it this is some of the time if i dont have coffee i have 4 cans of cola usually im trying to cut down to 1 pop or coffee a day

You might find that you like stevia-sweetened herbal and green tea better than soft drinks and coffee. (I sure do.) Tea and water are much, much healthier, and if it tastes good to you, it's a no-brainer.

When i gave up coffee, everybody said i had a complete personality change. However i was bored and depressed all the time. Now i drink coffee again, people tell me it's asshole juice and that i'm not as nice, but i feel way better! My mind is keen and sharp, and i can study for hours.

If the effects you describe were the only effects caffeine produced, I'd probably still be drinking coffee myself.
But it isn't limited to grouchiness and stimulation, alas.
And what is more, it's addictive... and, worse, there's drug tolerance to consider. In order to keep getting the same level of benefit, you'll have to keep upping the dose... until the dose is very destructive, indeed.
Or you can keep the dose the same, and find yourself addicted without much of a payback at all.

It's way oversimplified, like nearly all popular articles about drugs or nutrition.
Here's my take.
Lots and lots of vegetable foods (especially tropical) provide many, many micronutrients which are beneficial. Coffee is one. Some of these vegetable food sources also shovel drugs into us. Coffee is one.
A person on an industrial diet is starved of micronutrients, in general. They're sick. Feeding *anything* with micronutrients in it to that person will have health benefits.

There is life after you end a caffeine addiction (in my opinion, a better life), and you *can* get out of bed without coffee. It's not so hard; when you sleep without the drug in your system, you sleep better and are more rested when you get up.
Of course it's all much easier if you're routinely getting enough sleep.
If you are routinely skimping on sleep, you'll develop other health problems over the long haul. Google "sleep deprivation" and see how many disorders are linked to it.

@Urgelt i think because of the coffee i have really late nights and get up early, so do skimp a lot on sleep. i've cut down from 3 cups to 2 cups a day, and feel a lot better for it, but last time i tried to cut down to only 1 cup a day, i felt worse for it. You got me thinking about trying it again though.

I'm 16 in high school and I drink 16 oz of dark coffee each morning, and then usually have a diet coke or diet mt dew or even an energy drink like amp after school. I get headaches if I don't drink it. But I did quit it for a while by switching to earl grey tea and eventually to white tea and then I was fine. It's not like cocaine or something. Caffeine is a drug which can easily be overcome if you pay attention to what u r consuming

Stacie, your addiction was mild to moderate.
Cocaine works in the same way, and it's possible to use it, develop a mild addiction, and back off.
It's also possible with either drug to develop a deep, life-changing addiction. Cocaine addiction is worse primarily because of its legal status, cost, and social stigma.
Severe caffeine addiction can produce profound symptoms, not the least of them being personality and behavior changes. The Wikipedia article on caffeine has more info.

The routine of waking up in the morning and the feeling of essentially having that 1st cup of coffee before doing anything is actually a withdrawal symptom from not getting enough caffeine while sleeping. Hence, coffee addiction it is.

I'm 17 years old, a senior in high school. Every weekday during the school year I'll drink either a half a cup or cup of coffee before school in the mornings. Generally, I'll abstain from coffee on the weekends (probably because I get more sleep) with no side effects. Coffee is also my main source of caffeine; i.e., I don't consume other caffeinated substances. However, if I don't drink my morning coffee before school, I'll usually have a headache by the end of the day. Is this an addiction?

I don't know if it is, redsoxfan713. You're dealing with pretty low doses. Not insignificant doses, though.
Different people are differently sensitive to the addictive properties of caffeine (or any addictive drug).
If you find yourself feeling the need to increase your morning dose in order to ward off weekday headaches, or feel the need to consume caffeine on the weekends for the same reason, then I would conclude that you are probably edging towards full-blown addiction.

Caffeine, all by itself, is highly addictive. Using marijuana, or not using it, doesn't change this fact.
How much of the drug it takes to addict will vary from person to person. Some can be addicted by a single cup of coffee every day.
I'll suggest reading the Wikipedia article on caffeine. It's quite an eye-opener.

I was diagnosed with ADD because I drew in class. Medication didn't help, but I got good grades so the matter was dropped. When I became an adult I started drinking coffee, 1-2 cups a day, thinking it'd help me be alert. Despite everyone saying so, I noticed that, rather, it makes me more restless and tense. Tea will help you focus, caffeine just stimulates adrenaline. Fortunately I'm not addicted, but I like the taste and smell of coffee so I'm trying to find decaf. Hard to find here in Japan.

You are an excellent story teller, and you're very wise. I feel honored to listen to your experiences. Anyway, as far as soda goes, I don't really like the taste. I like water more than anything, but lately I've been getting hooked to caffeine in the form of a pill--Excedrin. See, even as a kid I would get these headaches, and the only thing that helps make it go away is that pill. I'm also starting to drink coffee...it's the only thing that gets rid of my headaches and makes me animated

There's no telling what gave you that first headache. But once you started taking caffeine for it, you may have fallen into a trap.
Caffeine, in the short term, dilates the blood vessels in the brain for a few hours. It eases some kinds of headaches.
But the drug has longer term effects, too - and one of them can be to bring on the very headaches which you use the drug to solve. That happened to me, and I let it get very bad before catching on.
It might be happening to you.

well i lasted about 3 weeks completely off caffeine and i had a constant headache every single day not to mention i was feeling very dull and down in the dumps. So im back on the wagon, or off the wagon, hell whatever it is. I Been pounding energy drinks and cups of coffee like madd. lol caffeine is one hell of a drug ill tell you what. ANd it is very psychoactive, ive found that out after indulging in the first cup of coffee with such a low tolerance.it basically got me high...im wired

Quitting isn't easy, that's for sure. And you're right about caffeine's psychoactivity.
You might want to think about the problem as similar to learning to ride a horse. Falling off is pretty common. It doesn't mean you can't get back on the horse and try again.
Cold turkey isn't for everyone. Perhaps tapering off will work better for you?

A LOT of people don't even realize that caffeine is a drug. I have felt similar withdraws from my pain medication: Oxycodine, but people around me fail to realize that Oxycodine isn't the only drug with a bad withdrawal so they tell me "you gotta get yourself off of this". Oxycodine is the only drug that can make my life bearable by decreasing both my chronic pains and my breakthrough pains. People tell me to just use advil/tylenol but even at a dose of 1g it does nothing for me.

I'm not at all glad that you're coping with chronic pain. No fun, that.
One of these days, we really need to acknowledge that among the cannabinoids are drugs that are safer than any of the pain medications currently available by prescription, they are not addictive, their analgesic properties compare favorably with opiates, and they're cheap to produce.. Which is not to say there are no side effects, but we do need them in the medical system.

@Urgelt In the past I have tried Marinol, but at first it didn't seem to work so i raised the dosage... Bad idea, I wen't into psychosis, as Marinol has a very high THC content (stronger than actual Marijuana). When I lowered the dosage and took it on a day to day basis I began to notice that I had less pain overall. The only reason I stopped is because I knew no doctor would prescribe it to me as I was not a cancer patient and I am only 18. They only care about cancer nowadays :(

Urgelt, i hope that you will have more free time in the future to share your knowledge and experiences with us. This video helped, and inspired me to put down the bean. Its been 4 days now. Its also been 4 days of a constant nagging headache that is only relieved by sleeping. On a good note ive noticed a slight reduction in anxiety which is a great relief to me.I was also less scattered and reckless at work. Caffeine seems to have been overstimulating me to the point of not being a good thing.

Something about my physiology is different; I never experienced much anxiety or sleep deprivation from consuming caffeine. Just those awful migraine headaches, which grew steadily more intolerable and frequent while I grew ever more frantic for a solution.
But the experience of most caffeine addicts seems to mirror yours, not mine. Anxiety is one of the most common symptoms inflicted by the drug.
If you can hang in there and stay off the drug, the payoff will be even better.

this past semester, I was drinking about ten cups of coffee several cups of espresso daily along with two or three caffeine pills, and it wasn't uncommon for me to have at least two monsters in the evening. I finally had to cut back because I lost 18 pounds in just a couple of weeks, and I was getting headaches all the time.

Sounds like you bought into the industry lie that caffeine is "energy." If it were, then more is better, eh? Can't have too much of a good thing.
But it is a lie. The drug is fiercely addictive and has brutal side effects, especially at the large doses you were consuming.
You aren't free of the drug yet. It can still harm you. Don't be complacent.

If you are addicted to coffeine, quit normal coffee and start drinking coffee without coffee. Next switch over to valeriana tea.
It binds coffeine and stuff like theobromin and helps balancing.

Valerian tea is a sedative, and a rather potent one. It's one of the less safe herbal teas you could choose, and not one to consume often. There are also some troubling indications of addictivity in the literature.
My advice is to pursue variety in herbal teas, and it's more fun, too. There are dozens and dozens of great flavors to enjoy.

Their are german studies ,that indicate the help of valerian tea ,when you are addicted to coffein.
It neutralizes the effects of coffeine, helps overcome the craving because of the changing brainwaves.
You could also try ibogain.

Valerian is a "downer." Caffeine is an "upper." Mixing and matching these drugs, and administering them to yourself without a doctor's involvement, might not be one of the safer things you could do to yourself.

it is possible to taper off caffeine without the pain of going cold turkey. last time I got off coffee i made a direct conversion to matcha green tea (which is not a cheap thing) matcha is green tea leaves ground into a powder and has ~ 30mg caffeine per 1 tsp. i cut off coffee and then used matcha at a dose dose (1 TBSP=90mg caf) and slowly cut it to 1/4 tsp/day over 3 weeks. i have migraines my whole life and was able to use this method to get off coffee without disaster.

There is no way to end an addiction without withdrawal symptoms, I think. Tapering reduces the symptoms but they occur over a longer period of time than with cold turkey. A wash, on average.
But you aren't average, you're you. One or the other of those methods may work better for you than the other.
It may take a few months before you notice a change in your migraine patterns. Be aware.

I've taken caffeine pills for the hell of it. Bad idea. I took 500mg and then went for a spin in my car. After about an hour I became sensitive to light, my hands started tingling, and then I blew chunks all over the dashboard. Caffeine sucks. For energy I suggest Ephedrine or Ephedra products. Those have worked for me a lot better than Caffeine, without the shitty feeling.

For energy, I suggest adequate sleep, good nutrition and exercise. Ephedrine or other drugs can pep you up in the short term, but the long term is always grim.

I've been drinking green tea lately myself, but I find myself worrying about the caffeine contained inside of it. Lately, I've found that when I'm parched, I crave green tea, not being sated by a drink of water. Am I in danger of caffeine addiction from green tea?

It's hard to become addicted to green tea, I think, but probably not impossible.
Here's what you can do to virtually eliminate the risk: - Use one tea bag per 18 oz mug of water. (I actually like the taste of it this way, using stevia for sweetening.) - Drink lots of water along with your tea. (Green tea is a diuretic, so you'll need more fluids.) - Mix up your teas. 3-4 green tea bags per week, the rest herbals.
Do that, and I think the risk of addiction is vanishingly small.

I've never really seen someone just honestly explain the problems they had with caffeine. Caffeine is just seen as such a normal harmless thing. I guess I might just be overly sensitive to it or something, because I can relate to the symptoms you mentioned. The hardest part to me of just not drinking any caffeine is giving up the energy boost it gives me. But, I'm starting to think my energy levels are actually below what they would be not drinking caffeine. I'll try switching to tea.

I think the long term effects outweigh the short-term gains.
I also think that most people are vulnerable to both the damaging side effects and addiction. Caffeine is highly addictive - which is the reason corporations love to put it in their products. It makes for repeat customers.
I mostly use herbal teas now, but 3 or 4 teabags of caffeinated tea per week is on my menu, too, sweetened with stevia extract powder. It's not enough to produce any symptoms, and I do enjoy it.

@Urgelt I've tried substituting tea that has caffeine, its okay for a bit. But I always wind up right back to drinking pots of coffee. Sometimes I'll fill a big mug, like for beer, with coffee. Friends or family give me a facial expression of ” you've got to be kidding me.” Thanks for the info, but especially, just speaking plainly about how you feel about it. I might go with decaff tea, drinking any seems to lead me back to drinking a lot.

To clarify, after I quit cold turkey in 1980, it was a long, long time before I began to drink any teas whatsoever.
Some folks say tapering off and switching to lower dose beverages helps them. I have no experience with that, myself.
I can tell you that after you're completely clean, you can probably drink low amounts of caffeinated teas without symptoms.

Man, I've kicked alcohol (after 10 years) and have shot up coke (as in cacaine) heroin, done pretty much anything put in front of me. My first trip was 2 hits of acid in ISS anyhoots....I've haven't yet been able to kick my coffee / energy drink addiction. It's an 'INVISIBLE ADDICTION'...as in an addiction thats socially acceptable and even desirable (lets you concentrate on monotonous, boring work).
Anyways, coffee is now helping me develop hypoglycemia, or so my doctor is saying. Thanks!

I quited like you cold turkey and got the worst headaches Ive ever had. During that time ive had a rough time in my life so the withdrawal symptoms only became worse and I began drinking it again. Now days I don't think about it much really but to be totally honest I can't remember the last time I went to school, work or even training without it.
I can't even remeber the last time I was feeling refreshed waking up. So thanks to your video im going to quit coffee. Thank you Urgelt

Hello Urgelt. Im a 19 year old guy who drinks alot of cofee. My addiction started of when I was 13 and ive drank coffee for the first time. It was at my grandmas house. I didn't really like the taste of it then. But as the years passed on and I drank caffaine indirect via coke and candy it became harder and harder to not see the problem.
It eventually come to an point where I needed to quit beacuse I was dependant on having that cup of coffee and I was consuming alot maybe as much as 10 cups.

i drink alot of caffeine (pepsi) i crave for it... right now im drinking pepsi more caffeine then coke ... i personnaly affirm that i have got caffeine high i drink more then 2l a day and a 2l bottle last less then 15 min drinked fast like that i get a good high Dont thing im kiding but saying i get high im also a weed smoker and i did shrooms Dxm... salvia... so its not just a hahaha im cool get high on caffeine... so yeah... this is my story

I'm so glad I'm only hooked on Mary Jane. She's pretty easy to quit. Just have to wait til my body remembers how to make melatonin(sleep hormone) again, lol - this was hard to watch. I remember my own (minor, in comparison) caffeine addiction in high school.

Yes. I've even heard of people sniffing large doses of it like cocaine. At least one commenter on this video has done that.
It's an addictive drug that is highly psychoactive (part of its psychoactivity is mood elevation), so it really shouldn't be a surprise to see behaviors we often associate with illegal drugs.

Hey great video, I've seen it three times now. I'm 19 and I have a really important question, hopefully you can answer. I know I'm a caffeine addict (2-3 cups a day, black) but everyone keeps telling me I'm overreacting. It's only been like this for me for two years and I really want to quit, do you really think I should quit cold turkey?
