  • This - created by Bob Fosse - was what was great about Chicago. I enjoyed the movie, and it made its point. but it wasn't as perfectly crafted as the stage version.

  • Just noticed for the first time - after watching this countless times through the years - that at 2:15, when Ann Reinking steps backwards, she steps on Bebe Neuwirth's foot! They both cover it so well. Professionals.

  • i prefer Bernadette Peter ' s version 0_o

  • Don't know hwo anyone could compare these two brilliant stage performers with the movie version...Renee and Catherine were terrific in the movie, but this is by far the best duo to ever do this show. They are the most incredible dancers, Bebe Neuwirth sang it great, and there's no comparison between two actresses doing competent jobs with the two best interpreters of these roles...EVER. And nobody danced Fosse better than Anne Reinking...no one.

  • Correcting myself....Gwen Verdon and Anne Reinking danced Fosse the best. Sorry, almost forgot her.

  • Though the quality isn't necessarily best, if I'm not mistaking, isn't that the fabulous Chita Rivera?

  • I didn't realize that Leigh Zimmerman is part of this Tony Awards clip. Recently, I saw her perform the role of "Velma Kelly" on March 17, 2011. She is a vision...kind of reminded me of a beautifully statuesque Julie Newmar, in a way. I LOVE Chicago.

  • I. Love. Bebe. Neuwirth. Enough said.

  • THAT was really amazing.

    Really really really amzaing.

    Yes.

They looked like they didn't have bones at one point, like, they were just like waves!

    Crazy stuff man

  • FANTASTIC

  • I saw the musical before the movie, the production is better in my opinion but I'll have to give credit to Hollywood for adapting it to the screen. As Lionessll mentioned. It's hard to compare the two since the audience gets a different experience watching it. Keep the context in mind. Not to mention you pay a lot to see the Broadway production so you expect to see a good show.

  • i've never seen this musical but it sure sounds good to watch and i like the music :DD

  • no way..the stage version is better...and bebe & anne were awesome...not to mention the male leads...but i like to movie too...the problem is that if you see a movie version of a play its always polished and of high production value/cost...so in that way they cannot be compared...similar to evita...the movie is great and glossy...but nothing beats live theatre ever...!

    ever!

  • I honestly think Catherine sings better...

  • The movie was better

  • like:)

  • one hell of an electrifying routine... goosebumps everytime!! what more if it were in HD?!! :-)

  • cant see anything...

  • whos the woman playing velma kelly she looks so familiar

  • @Phil7460 that's Bebe Neuwirth. You may know her for her twice Emmy-award winning role of Lilith Sternin on CHEERS, or her many movie appearances (i.e. HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS, THE FACULTY, SUMMER OF SAM).

  • I want to be Ms. Reinking when i grow up!

  • i met catherine zeta jones today and micheal douglas :)

  • Bebe Neuwirth and Ann Reinking are my perfect Velma and Roxie! Just love 'em!

  • It's really exciting to watch live, thrilling in a way that the film could never be.

  • damn amazing i love both these women

  • I'm in my high school production of the show. We stink and the show is on WEDNESDAY

  • The "Who plays Roxie" comment was too funny. Not only is Reinking Broadway legend, but she also choreographed this show as well as "Fosse" as she was Fosse's companion for the 2nd part of his life, and Gwen Verdon, the 1st half of his life. Verdon played Roxie, in the original 'Chicago'...and Reinking played herself, more or less, in the Fosse bio pic, 'All That Jazz'.....when Fosse knew he was dying of overwork, and decided to film it, with others. Amazing story.

  • That was hot, haha! My favourite part was 2:09 :) Very cute and sexy and odd...

  • This will probably piss the theater nerds off, but I thought Catherine and Renee's dance at the end of the movie was way better than this performance. Ditto for the opening song--I don't care for the way Bebe sings it.

  • @copyright1982 For me personaly i adore Bebe but i do agree that the begining in the movie entertains me more in the way it was staged and the dancing, but i just love the Broadway last number.

But it would be boring if every one like the same thing =)

  • @copyright1982 you are right that the dance in the movie was better, well at least more elaborate. but in theater you are actually singing while dancing. while in the movie they are lip singing during the dance routine.

  • @narutohinta33 ? But there are no words to 'Hot Honey Rag' thus no singing or lip-syncing to be done.

  • @copyright1982 Who cares? This is the best choreography of all time.

  • I ADORE this!

  • очень много дырок и пропусков, хочется больше динамики, это ведь не лебединое озеро..., как-то лирично вышло

  • That Hot Honey Rag was ON FIRE.

  • this gives me chills.

  • I love Bebe

  • ...whoever plays Roxie looks like a man with this quality of video.

  • @13Superkitsune WHOEVER PLAYS ROXIE!? That's Anne Reinking dude....yoooouuu should be really ashamed of yourself. She's legendary. Sickly legendary...

  • cant get over how the duo for hot honey rag were out of sync. unless its supposed to be that way. otherwise it was good

  • Yes it has to be out of sync you can see that in every performance of this choreography.

  • no offense i hate her voice

  • i er agree with u

  • i seen this in leeds it was realyy good

  • Amazing!!! I hope Ashlee Simpson will be able to live up to that!

  • THAT WAS AmAzInG!!!!!

  • when is this clip from?

anne reinking is amazing even though she isn't that young anymore, totally love her version of the arms, very different from what i have seen in West End in the past years :))

  • I saw the stage show in NY. I think the movie dancers handled the Fosse choreography very well, better than the stage dancers who were often out of sync I love the movie casting.

  • love this musical

  • This is so hot

  • Love it!!!!!! Love you Ann.....we miss you!!

  • Damn who Knew Lillith could be so Hot.

  • yes and she doesn't even has her hair down......lol

  • I just saw this show on Broadway a couple of days ago and it was WONDERFUL. Different cast members, of course, but still an amazing show.

  • quality or not...thank you so much for posting this! no second takes on broadway...love it love it!

  • I LOOOOOOOVE Anne Reinking!!

  • Blurred, sticking and utterly delicious! thanks so much.

  • i love it

    saw it new york

    in london

    in vienna

in the movies - can´t get enough of it

  • Ur so lucky!! I lov3 this!!!

  • Lucky, I had to watch the original online. Bad quality. But the remake with Catherine-Zeta Jones & Renee Zelleweger was awesome too!

  • I liked the movie too but its different from a life show definitively. The European movie premiere was in Berlin Germany and Zita Jones Zellweger and Gere pariticpated life. Big event!

  • Yea. I just wish I coulda seen the live 1 personally

  • this is freakin' AMAZING

  • sorry sorry but Bob Fosse didn`t do the choreography for 'Chicago', he did 'All That Jazz' , Chicago was a later revival of the songs and adapted a a broader story line :) , sorry just ahd to point it out

  • Bob Fosse actually -did- do the original choreography back in the 1970's for Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera... this choreography for the revival is Ann Reinking's, taking her inspiration from Fosse. All That Jazz the musical opened after Chicago did (1970's again), and I think you're right that he also choreographed it... either he did, or it was a tribute musical to him, as he passed away not too long after the shows first ran.

  • hmm.. i thought "All That Jazz" came first? mayybe not.. hmm i`ll need to have a relook at dates (: , either way his choreography is amazing. Truly hutted he passed away so early. Though he was a chain smoker lol some amazing movie`s and documentarie`s from people about what he was like.. would have loved to have worked with him =]

  • Bebe puts Zeta-Jones to shame...what a voice.

  • i love it

  • not as good as Catherine Zeta-Jones

  • exactly jones is way better

  • I love Zeta-Jones, but you have to admit that there's some REALLY cool dancing in this! 2:09 for example...

  • is anne roxie or velma?

  • ANN REINKING is Roxie...BEBE NEUWIRTH is Velma. The amazing Ms. Reinking had played Roxie in the original 1975 production of CHICAGO after Gwen Verdon left the show. There is another awe-inspiring dancer/singer/actress who played the part in that original production - LENORA NEMETZ. She could move in ways that I don't think that God could have even imagined.

  • Sorry - this was meant as a response to aasjb4ever, not as a new comment.

  • gocha thanks!

and i saw lenora in gypsy and she was hilarious!

  • wow. bebe is such a fluid dancer. much like a noodle.

but, i still prefer ann as a better dancer

  • hehehe...you called her a noodle...it makes me laugh to try and picture Lilith Sternin as a noodle...

  • Love the little Charleston they do at 1:16!

  • I was in the ORIGINAL production with Gwen Verdon,Chita Rivera and Jerry Orbach

  • You were? That must have benn SOOOOO COOL!!!! What is chita like??

  • To a one, they were great people, pros everyone of them and I learned so much, just watching how they could hold an audience in the palm of their hand. Chita could've behaved like the diva she is, but there was none of that...EVER. Gwen was a sweetheart and it was easy to see why Mr Fosse, even though he was famously unfaithful, was still crazy about her. Chita endeared herself to me during rehearsals when she missed a step and yelled,"Shit!" so the whole comapny could hear it!LOL

  • Haha, I luv chita to death, she is in my top fav actresses along with angela lansbury, bernadette, betty buckley, patti lupone. I would KILL to meet her! I am so jealous of you, it must have been an amazing experince, do you and chita still keep in touch? lol stupid ? i know

  • They should increase the budget and totally re-do the show. The movie was amazing especially the hothoney rag!

  • but.... it was cut and done in 15 second intervals. This is one take. And, having seen the Broadway version... it knocked the socks off of the movie. The movie just can't hold a candle to the real show.

  • Absolutely fantastic performance.

  • you are intense.

  • Wha? Wha? I liked it!! :)

  • You can't compare a Bob Fosse original to a movie. The movie was fantastic but you just can't beat the classic version with stars like Anne and Gwen. Don't hate on the oldies ;)

  • Come on guys you shouldn't compare the movie and the show. It is to different industries, its not like they should, or even could, be the same. They both rock!

  • I partially agree. I just prefer the show version. Not just this show version. Somehow I just enjoy it more in a stage performance.

  • I have to say, I did love the stage production that was on tour. It was really cool to have the orchestra on stage with live music and seeing the entire dance numbers. It really was superb. On the other hand in the movie we got to see the tap dance and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Zellwigger and Rielly wonderful performances. Not to metion all the extra bits of information that was stuffed into the movie. Again I love both :) but I understand liking one over the other. They are different tastes.

  • I LOVE THE 'CHICAGO' FILM version with Catherine Zeta singing.

  • love Ann Reinking and Bebe Neuwirth

  • These two are perfection!

  • Catherine Zeta-Jones was never on Broadway. On London's West End, she was in 42nd Street and she's also sung extensively on British TV. People should attempt to know some facts before they type in such incorrect comments.

As someone who saw the original CHICAGO 7 times, no one compares to Chita Rivera. Bob Fosse's clear intent was to show off one of most monunental talents in theater history.

  • people are very ignorant - they don't realise that the movie was edited, looped and whatnot for a fast fix... if Zeta Jones hits those notes or whatever believe me it wasnt in one take. This is actually the stage version when real physical life is to be seen and cannot be given the gloss people crave, the very people who aren't aware of subversive intent and think everything is as they see...

  • My theater summer camp did this last year ours was soooo good. Type in Ypcca and you'll find it. It's amazing

  • I have seen the movie and LOVED it, however the dance in the Broadway show was amazing!!! I loved them both...Fosse was amazing.

  • I liked the movie just fine, but nothing can compare to Bebe and Ann. Two of the finest dancers ever to grace the stage, and the perfect duo.

  • Catherine Zeta-Jones did all of her own singing.

  • wrong...she did her own singing

  • Catherine Zeta jones did her own singing.... she's had a history in broadway.....

  • All movie musicals have voice overs because the director wants the perfect scene. Catherine definitely did her own singing whether or not it was all in one shot is up for debate. Personally, I think it looks like she is singing , and she was amazing in Chicago.

  • That's true...the vocals were pre-recorded and not done live, but it is definitely her singing

  • Chita Rivera was great as the first Velma Kelly on Broadway, and her dancing was fantastic, but I do prefer the movie version with Catherine zeta-Jones as Velma.

The dancers in the cell block tango sequence in the movie were superb and exciting to watch as well!

    Bebe is alright.

  • I'm sure I've read somewhere that Catherine Zeta Jones' voice is dubbed over by a french singer for the movie ...

Might be incorrect... but pause for though

  • zeta jones is the best velma kelly ever

  • loved it,, although the movie velma sings better than she does

  • love the song but there was too many people in the ensemble for all that jazz it looked more like a mob than the casual group its supposed to

  • wow, Bebe...

  • awesome!

  • it's so lousy...compared to the modern one

  • Why? If never seen neither.

  • and where would the "mondern one" be without the stage show? Bob Fosse is rolling in his grave at your comment. ;) :P

  • Eh?

By the 'modern one', do you mean the film?

You can't compare a stage performance to a film.

Especially when the material was originally meant for stage!

  • My dream role is Velma Kelley!

  • RRgh, that looks so cool...Wish I could see this live, but all I have is the movie...not that the movie's bad or anything, but I think it would be a lot cooler live... :P

  • lol what ann id dancing at around 2:35 is SO funny. They both look like their having so much fun!

  • Didn't like it.

  • omg, ann reinking is amazing!

  • Let's remember that these people are performing LIVE and in ONE TAKE. Movies allow them to stop the camera. I will always prefer Bebe in this dark, sarcastic revival. I felt the movie completely butchered the very POINT of the story; they cut all the ironic material and made it literal instead of a tongue-in-cheek satire. The very fact that Mary Sunshine was a real woman, and that they shortened it for better "attention span", leaves me dissatisfied. I prefer an artist's INTENDED vision.

  • i love 2.09

i like this version so much better,

these people are amazing singers and dancers.

  • most of you are forgetting that this is the musical, not the movie. this is fosse, not rob marshal.

the movie version IS great, just the broadway revival is better and the real thing. the number isnt supposed to be happy and "fun" necessarily. the song is supposed to be a bit sarcastic and dark in a way. more seductive and mysterious. its not a very openly sexy number, again more alluring and seductive, not blatant sex.

  • some parts were fun but other parts they didn't seem to be doing the moves together very well.

  • This is exactly why I love seeing her in this musical :)

  • Ok, first, the character from cheers you are refering to is Lilith. It was 20 years ago too. Second, she is an actor. That's the point. Actors need to be allowed to play more than one kind of character. Otherwise we don't really have actors at all. A perfect example of a typecast actor is Ed O'Neill. He is actually quite talented, yet because audiences only think of him as "Al Bundy", they don't allow him to move on. Thus, we watch him in the same role over and over again. Let actors act.

  • And P.S. I like Bebe voice better.

  • I personally think that Babe is good but not the best out there. I think that Chita and CZJ are better (only CZJ had the worst hair)

  • I prefer Catherine Zeta-Jones meeself! ^_^

  • Great performance for the Tony's. Fun to watch but I still am much more exhilirated when I see the movie version. People love Bebe but she looks so awkward as a dancer compared to Anne.

  • Who can help me finding material to study this choreography? I'd like to know on which video/dvd I can puchase this. Thanks for a hint.

  • I don't know if its just me... or the time time, but I saw Gwen and Chita in Chicago as a kid and enjoyed it.

Ann and Bebe, however, just blew my mind. I returned and saw them gosh... maybe 14 times. It was tremendous - one of the highlights of my life as a Broadway theatre goer. It seems Ann's body was made for those Fosse inspired movements and Bebe... she was magnificent in the role.

  • hm.. check out the stud @ .13 on the left!

    <3<3<3

  • The next best thing to Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera!

  • I could do that.

  • As untrained dancers CZJ & RZ did a fine job in the Chicago movie, but it is fascinating to watch BN & AR in comparison. Even better, we have a video of Chita Rivera & Gwen Verdon [who were trained dancers] for even better comparison. Chita herself said of the music for Chicago, emphatically, "That score works". I think we may interpret that to mean, you would need to be a total clodhopper to fuck up All That Jazz/ Hot Honey Rag etc.

  • Bebe is a trained dancer, too. :)

  • CZJ is a trained dancer actually, you must have forgotten that she started as peggy sawyer in 42nd Street!

  • Catherine Zeta-Jones IS a trained dancer and voted the fastest tap dancer in The British Isles. She starred in the London production of 42nd St

  • Isn't it bizarre that Bebe became Roxie?

  • not really. I mean yeah it was weird hearing about it at first(I thought she was all wrong for the role), but when I saw her as Roxie, I completely forgot she was velma. She was amazing! It also suprised me that she had her hip replaced earlier last year. She moved really well. go Bebe!

  • I saw her as Roxie, she was amazing.

  • Yea, me to. She was great. You wouldn't belive she had hip surgery earlier in the year.

  • I love watching these two perform, you can tell they are loving every moment and having as much fun dancing that we have watching them.

  • It's great to watch the evolution of the 'Hot Honey Rag' from 75 and 84 with Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera to this with Bebe and Anne. All we need now is someone to upload the final dance sequence form the movie.

  • Hot Honey Rag always makes me feel like dancing!! But I can't do the dance they did, it's great to watch though

  • I don't like her voice but the dancing is brilliant.

  • Legs!

  • very nice

  • WOW!!! this video is amazing!! I've seen some videos from a very amateur presentation from Peru. They should learn what Chicago is about!..Ann Reinking is brilliant!!

  • next to gwen and chita, the best duo ever to do this.

  • that was some GREAT dancing!!!

  • why so blurry... Oh god do I have glaucoma?

  • yes you do sorry to say

  • amazinggggggggggggggggggg

  • wow wkd vid!

  • Ann Reinking is the best. She outshines all the others.

  • fabulous!

  • I agree. At Last!
