@waikaywong There is one and only one choreography for Class Concert, but i do not know every year it has been performed. In January 2011, the Bolshoi Ballet performed Class Concert and Giselle which was shown in movie theaters around the world. The choreography has always been the same.
@AARONEEUS The complete 40 minute ballet has much to do with ballet, but the ending, which this is, is primarily about tricks. so when the full ballet is seen, it begins very simple with ballet class and gradually gets more difficult until the ending can be seen as only tricks. Many ballet fans love this display.
@AARONEEUS This ballet is based on the Royal Danish Etudes, which also get a little trickier toward the end. This being a Russian choreography, used the Russian dynamics to make it more show off style(tricks) The Leningrad choreography by Konstantine Sergeyev, is based on Etudes, but it is all about ballet and has very little tricks, if any, involved. If you do not consider fouettes as tricks , then Sergeyev's choreography has no tricks. I consider his choreography as the best of all 3.
I dont understand the words used by various armchair critics - 'tricks' and 'circus'. I wonder if you mean the amazing theatrical feats born from a phenomenal technique? Balletic expressions like these are a choice, and Mr. Vasiliev does them because he can and there isn't a dancer around today who wouldn't emulate him if he could. As for his acting or 'characters' as was crudely stated, I have seen his 'Spartacus' - which was passionate, visceral and moving. His height is completely immaterial.
@bolshoiboy8 Unfortunate that Andrei Batalov did not join the Bolshoi many years ago. He was taller, more elegant and more polished than Vasiliev, but he foolishly stayed in prison.
@pediatrapaola I have not been next to Ivan, but based on him not being much taller than Osipova, who is short, I suspect that Ivan is 1-2 inches shorter than Batalov. I assume that Batalov is one inch taller than Baryshnikov and i have been next to both of them, but many years apart.
@pediatrapaola ONCE SAW A CLIP AND IVAN WAS NEAR TO VOLODIA VASILIEV AND WERE MORE OR LESS THE SAME HEIGHT.I WAS SOMETIMES VERY NEXT TO VOLODIA THAT WAS LITTLE SHORTER THAN ME JUDJED HIM 172/173 CM
@pediatrapaola Go to 4/4 of the 2007 Bolshoi Class Concert and stop at 3 minutes 20 seconds ( I think) and you will see Vasiliev next to a very young boy student and Ivan seems shorter than Baryshnikov to my eyes when comparing him next to other dancers.
@bolshoiboy8 Sorry, i meant that he foolishly stayed at the Kirov, but then he was like a prisoner, being the greatest dancer in the world, with the possible exception of his fellow Kirov dancer, Ruzimatov. He was much better than Zelensky and much better than Tsiskaridze, who he beat in the Moscow Competition. What a wasted career!.
@bolshoiboy8 Before he starts decaying, Batalov should be invited to dance Spartacus. He would have all the power that Ivan Vasiliev has and his grace and artistry will rival Vladimir Vasiliev.
@russianballetvideo I agree. I feel that Batalov is TRULY closer to Valodia than Ivan will ever be. Ivan does the tricks but his characters arent as strong. It's like he's playing superman rather than actually BEING superman with those cheap facial expressions, etc.
forgive me if i'm wrong, but is this class concert similar to the one in Year 2007 which is posted too? i mean, do they do the same thing each year?

Vasiliev's great at tricks and all, but just pause the video while he's doing his chaines. Proves that he's all tricks and no technique.

Vasilev's got a great jump, powerful but lacking in grace. Kind of a thick, unatractive body - but maybe he'll grow out of that...
