@TheManquilter I haven't found this to be a problem. The magnets hold the quilt securely enough that you can attach your batting, run the basting line and attach the floated quilt top without it pulling loose. If you're worried about it, you can just roll your backing once around the take up roller and it's as tight as if you pinned or zipped.
@sprancek - I purchased the magnets from Lee Valley Tools (Canada) they are rare earth magnets - 1/2". You can use 3/8" magnets as well, but you'll need to use a few more.
Please be aware that magnets can cause damage to computer hard drives and other magnetic media (such as credit cards and old floppy disks). If you are at all concerned about using magnets near your quilting machine you should contact your manufacturer or vendor.
oh I only wish that held the quilt securely.
