I got sprayed in the face eyes and mouth by one of these guys...it was here in texas we call these leaf bugs...but the stick bugs im all too familiar with...dont fuck with them! Its horrible taste and feeling.
@MrTex1987 You sure? I don't recall hearing about any stick insects that spray, unless it's the Black Beauty/Velvet which live in Peru. It probably wasn't a stick insect.
@TheInsectMania Yeah Im sure. It might not be this exact secies, but its a cousin for sure. There is a little twist to the story though...I was actually oking 2 of them and they were mating...I was young 12 or 13, but to say the least, the taste and burn was unforgetable. Very metallic in flavor, it was kinda like getting hit in the face with an aluminum bat
I think Texas is alot like Australia in that its more dangerous in creatures and flora than your tyical civilized establishment.
Thats 100% NOT a mantis, manis it's not even close related to the phasmid family... (stick insect) thats on the video it's a extatosoma tiaratum female
This is an Extatosoma tiaratum, AKA the Spiny Leaf-Insect, If you're wondering what it is eating at the start it appears to have just shed it's skin and is now eating the shed skin, It's full of proteiny goodness! They are top pets.. although not cuddly.. but you definitely become attached to them.. they become Very cute to someone who keeps them.. I think they are adorable

@Mazzy95 Incorrect. Stick insects can mate, but most species can produce eggs without mating. They "Clone" themselves. They eat their skin for extra nutrients. These guys are in no way cannibalistic or insectivorous.
when stick insects are disturbed they do tree things: pretend to be dead or try to scare you with red things under theyre legs or wave side to side like this one is doing
i think the dancing is a natural adaptation for stick bugs, they move back and forth like a limb in the breeze, i believe that is why it is doing it, i could be wrong though
no te puedo creer lo que encontarstes este insecto es una mantis pero es casi imposible de encontrarla esta en bosques muy densos son peligrosas y fuertes
did your stick insects start growing wings like mine? would you tell me when they grew theyre wings if they did , and are mine male if they grow wings?

is the insect drunk or high on drug? can't barely walk...
ltmoua 5 years ago
it sways because in nature, the swaying is to mimmick the movement of other branches caught in a breeze so that it isn't zeroed out as an insect.
