Lucas based three of the characters on stages of his life. Toad was him as an awkward highschool freshman. John was him as a hot rod driving young adult. And Curt was him in USC film school. So the first two characters needed to "die" in order so the latter could come into being. As a narrative it is tragic, but as a metaphor it is less so. Both Toad and John were sides of Lucas that were gone, that's why they stay in Modesto, while Curt was the side that became the film director.
Correct me if I'm wrong but in the original release I swear the cameos at the end came on one by one and then faded out to be replaced by the next rather than ending up as ensemble as they do here. Is this some sort of 21st century CGI change for the DVD? I read somewhere the "mackerel sky" sunset in the opening shot is also a CGI addition and I definitely do not remember it in the original (which I've seen about 10 times).
The studio execs at Universal did NOT want Lucas to include the post-scripts about the fates of the lead characters which means they misunderstood the nature of the film. "Graffiti" is such a good film BECAUSE of the post scripts and the inferences we draw from them. Though nostalgic, Lucas' film is not sentimental - wistful, yes, but not sentimental. In a simple gesture, the post scripts indicate the near total transformation in American culture that would occur over the next short decade.
Because in America, when the sun rises, it's always a brand-new day, and another chance to do it right, and DIFFERENTLY than anyone else ever did it before. Merry Christmas, everyone. ;])
Both crew and cast have said that George Lucas was so shy that someone of the crew had to yell CUT or ACTION during filming, his only words were "faster" or "more intense" . His shyness continued in Star Wars. But for The Phantom Menace he was a grown up man secure with himself, some fans wish he still were the young nerdy guy from the seventies.
I saw this movie when it came out in 73... I was almost 9 years old. Ive since watched it at least 50 times over the years, it never gets old. One of my all time favorites.
Eh I hate when movies end by telling what "happend' to the characters... it is just a cheap ploy to pull at our heart strings. Unless the movie is based on actual people or it is a comedy...leave that shit out and let the character live on and allow the audience something to think about.
Ah, the days when people actually watched airplanes take off from the runway. Plus, one of the best endings in recent film history. "All Summer Long" is a great, underrated Beach Boys single, as well.
I really like how they show the fates of all the characters at the end, which makes it seem as if they really existed and the whole thing is a real story.
How the heck did The Toad end up fighting in Vietnam? Even if he was drafted, I don't see how he'd pass the physical. Too bad, he was my favorite out of the four guys in this movie.
if only guys dressed like men in 50/60s with the fitted blue jeans and a black or white muscle shirt i would nearly faint talk about real sex appeal:)
Memories...sighhh...what would some of us do without them. Dayum I remember seeing this at the theatre, my arm around my girl, it was summertime, and I thought I was going to live forever. Thanks for the upload..it helps me live on and brings smiles to a muddled life.
@TheMadcapLaughs1992 I didn't know there was a second American Graffiti. So that should answer it. I'm glad you enjoyed watching this one though, and yes Debbie is cute :)
@marcolopolis555 Yes there is a sequel, titled "More American Graffiti" I saw it in 1979. Interesting, but not worth the ticket price (at the time). By the way thanks for uploading marcolopolis555.
@marcolopolis555 Yea that sucks the other day i was watching a movie but didin't finish watching it because i fell asleep, so the next day i tried watching it but it was taken down.
You should be knighted for uploading this it is the best movie about the mid 50s I seen ever and the story line is good so thanks for uploading an impossible movie to get in Australia
One of the best movies ever made... ah the freedom - not like the control the "men up top" have today. The cars, the love in the air... those days are gone, and are now experienced by a select few who truly cherish and value it.
awesome, thanks for posting... what a brilliant film...
got the models of john's 5 window and that black 55 chevy looking at me from across my brothers room, and a load of other muscle that hangs out in the bookcase..... haha

I read somewhere that this was the first film to use epilogue cards. Does anybody know of an earlier film that had them?

That shot of Kurt looking down at the car has to be the most powerful single shot George Lucas ever filmed.
