All I gotta say is watch Michael Petersons section from Albert Falzon's classic surf film "morning of the earth" where he is absolutely killing it at Kira and probably 6 or 7 years before this footage when boards were first starting to get short. So much style and wave knowledge as well as innovation for the time. Michael Peterson was as good as the rest back then if not better he just didn't have the marketable personality that MR, or Shaun Tomson had he was a really quirky guy actually.
he is going alot faster than alot of surfers today- more down the line and less cutback and ariel crap.
of course the tri fin set up lets you carve a bit more but if you notice the single fin lets him rock a bit and be slightly out of control which is kinda cool.
but you can tell the guys today are better, quicker... still its fun to watch this and since it is different a bit more entertaining.
Of note is how few hotels had been built on the "Goldie". Now it looks like Miami Beach on steroids! This footage is classic - right at the time "pro surfing" started getting serious with sponsorship deals and finally....finally....finally...SOME MONEY!!!!!! We love you "Bronzed Aussies"! You really "Busted Down the Door". Thanks to them, we have the ASP "Dream Tour" for both men and women. And it's growing all the time. Gidget would be proud!!!
A contest was rare back then. A non-scandalous surfer was rare back then. From 1970-1980 there was a strong media push that surfers were punk airheads.
@ToolsnFire You probably need to watch clearer footage. Or possibly you can't appreciate MP's power, hard edge and impeccible positioning. Watching clearer footage shows it was like a man (MP) surfing against a boy (MR). MR paddling 2/3 down the face at takeoff is laughable. Amazes me how folks get so excited about MR flipping & flapping over the face of the wave. MP was raw power and in tune with the wave.
yeh i was there too taking photos, still got lots of good ones from then, living in the council camping ground at corrumbin- learnt to surf there, doing nothing else all day for about 7 months, good times then good times now!!!!dead right about the boards and there were surf shops around everywhere- with shapers not clothes!!
I was at this contest as a 12 year old grommet. Me old man let me an my brothers have a day off school. did plenty of surfing in the 70s (started when I was 7yo in '72 living at noosa) the thing about those boards in them days-no 2 were alike. Everyone was doing their own thing so there was plenty of wild creations - short round ones, long thick pintails, swallowtails, twin fins, 5 fins but mostly single fins-and NO legropes-you had to know how to swim well AND you had to pick your waves....
Michael Peterson reminds me of Occy. If Occy rode that ol' thang back in the day then I reckon he'd surf alot like that...Mark Richards is a legend bloke. I got an 82 retro twinny custom made off him this Winter. He modernised the underneath with a single to double concave setup and IT RIPS LIKE A MODERN BOARD!!! Great old footage...
In his book he talks about how much he hates thrusters, he thinks they`re bad for your back. He took over from the longboarders with his cut down single fin, and the thruster riders took over from him.
for incredible footage of MP, google 'the surf network' and download hal jepsen's movie 'Super Session'...extended footage at kirra plus an incredible wave in hawaii at 1 hour 7 seconds...just pause then continually press the fast forward button to watch it frame by frame...
love the early Surfers Paradise skyline in the background..

"MR is KING?"
Of what? Ripping off the Twin Fiin Fish from Reno who got it from the Boys in San Diego, like Steve Lis for instance?
For Oz, MP was, is and Always will be King. No one beat him but his Illness and his self-medicating.
AI is King in Hawaii for the same reason. Substitute Bi-Polar for Schiz and they were both FEARED ANIMALS in the Water.
MR...HA! MP dusted him in his last contest in the Finals on SMACK!
Either you are too young or too Ignorant to know the TRUTH.
Wake up.

Cool old footage. Times and boards change, but the stoke stays the same.

Ya know, the '70s sucked in so many ways, but when you were out in the water, it didn't really matter. Good times.
