oh god! i just love how hes dancing on the roof!....this also seems slower than the other version....it satarts off different too but oh ell there both good!
I am a CHIMNEY sweep, i love this song its awesome to have something other than Chim-chimeny to think of when it comes to music around my profession, i have to endure all manner of Mary Poppins based jokes while im working, the guy going on about is a moron, who doesnt get the meaning of the phrase "shake you from your sleep", hes singing a song of sorrow on the rooftops, you cant sneak down a chimney, its impossible, if you dont think so what about all the wannabe santas that die each..December
This has nothing to do with rape, but it is naughty. She's a lonely widow who happily welcomes a chimney sweep between her legs. The true message in this song is the lack of a 401K or overtime pay for chimney workers. Lighten up for hell's sake!
@prairiechicken3 I thought the profession of chimney sweep was used to draw a parallel with child prostitutes - exploited, underage, and forced into a demeaning (and often dangerous) line of work to support themselves. Lots of Decemberists songs are open to interpretation, though!
Thanks. Some people choose to interpret that the sweep and the widow have...relations, but I didn't really think they did. I think they became friends though... HAHA
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
But the whole song is about him sneaking into people's homes, raping them in their sleep, and then killing them. The Widow just asks him to have sex with her rather then be raped because her husband is dead and she can't have sex anymore...this song is really sad and depressing, there is no room for any other interpretation...
Okay, i've listened to it like twelve times... I'm not really sure where you're getting the raping and killing from. I'm pretty sure the orphan and the widow have sex at the end, but the rest, I don't know where you're getting from....
The orphan and the widow do have sex....and as for the rest, well you have to read between the lines. They don't come out and say specifically that he raped people, but it's heavily implied and I know for a fact that is what's going on in this song...
This song has nothing to do with rape. It's not implied at all, unless you are suggesting the widow committed statutory rape against the chimney sweep (chimney sweeps were almost always children who--due to occupational hazards--didn't live far past 15). Prairechicken is dead on, and you are pompous.
Actually, allow me to adjust one thing: until 1840 chimney sweeps were largely children. And if anyone is confused, i'm calling Whenwillifindone pompous, not Prairiechicken.
Really? That's your argument? Applying that same logic, I could rave on street corners that Jesus hates gays until people (quite rightfully) call me an idiot, and tell them,
It's true, that's all. Just ask Jesus if you still refuse to believe it.
Totally unverifiable except under highly unlikely circumstances, and gives the impression that said person or group has already explicitly agreed with me.
*sigh* I'm sure it is. Do you have a source? Because I'd rather not sift through all the song lyric pages to find what the band thinks their song is about.
@whenwillifindone Okay, I've looked all over the internet for this "not unverifiable" reference to what you claim the band says about this song referring to a serial murderer/rapist and I can't find anything of the kind. Can you cite your source, please?
@whenwillifindone you have an upsetting imagination... i mean, you can interprate it however you want, but.. well i dont really have any other words for that..
@whenwillifindone You intrepreted the song very wrong, if you listen very carefully to the first part, you will understand that when he says " wake you from your sleep", he doesn't mean rape you, he will wake you nwith his cry.
@mmmgreenday Yeah, sort of like what Curley's Wife wanted in "Of Mice and Men". she never really wanted to have relations, she just wanted someone to talk to and confide in
i don't feel that the video goes with the song at all. it feels like it was based on the sound of the song and not the words...i for one have never seen someone dance with a broom stick, while letting us know that he's seen no love or mother's joy.
I beg to differ.... this clip does not go at all with the song. have you ever seen someone says that she/he is and orphan boy who's seen no love or mother's joy dancing and smilling. i sure haven't, i just don't feel it!
how could anybody even think that anyone could say anything mean about this clip?! it exhudes such massive niceness. for the first half i thought it was a mashup of mary poppins but i'm pretty stewed right now. itsa a worthy contribution to the sweepsploitation genre and perfect for the tune.
What I've noticed is that the comments for this video are not nasty at all. Although I've seen, on far better videos, horrible comments that just make you hate humanity.
I have come to believe that the people watching this video, obviously, like the Decemberists. As I do.
Perhaps that style of music (alternative/indie??) captures an audience of less violent, kinder people.
Poor Sweep, at least he gets a happy ending...er...bad choice of words.

Correction: the guy going on about rape
the chimney sweep has always been the loveable rogue of folk culture, hence the widows offer. Go Chimbley go
