I'm yet to be convinced that the difference between one country's cuisine, and another, gets down to nothing more than the variety of bean sprout (ok, slight exaggeration)..Blindfold some of these 'la-de-dah foodies' and they'd be hard pressed to tell whether they eating peking duck, or sucking on an Alaskan ice cube.
frankly im malaysian and i think she's good at cooking laksa. Laksa is my all-time favourite and i wish all the western people could try it in homes or when they visited malaysia.

freaking bullshit man, laksa is 100% Malaysian, any food from Singapore is just a copycat from Malaysia. The only singaporean food they have is " Singapore Noodles", which sucks like shit. =.=
Food Safari is a Australian show on SBS on wed:7:30pm . Best Malay Restaurant in Melbourne is - Malamas on st georges rd Nth Fitzroy and Nonya on Lygon st Carlton ( Little Italy )..
...In the northern region (Penang) we have asam laksa, in the northeastern region (Kelantan/Terengganu) we have LAKSAM, while in the southern region (Johor), LAKSA JOHOR uses spaghetti instead of rice noodles and it's DRY not soupy like the ASAM LAKSA...
Again... like others have pointed out, this is MORE like CURRY MEE in Malaysia...
I am an Asian - Australian and we love Laksa! My friends and I always insearch for a good laksa Restaurants. We like our laksas to be really spicy and creamy. Sometimes we need to put extra chilli and Sa-te paste in our soup. Is the Authentic Laksa like that? Can you recommend a restaurant in Sydney?
Like I said, in Malaysia, there are many varities of laksa (cooking-wise) depending on the regions. This video show is more like curry mee sold here in Malaysia, no 'laksa' per se.
Oh btw, I just made authentic asam laksa last weekend, my first try and my friends loved it!!!
In Australia, most of the Malay-Chinese Restaurant serve Curry Mee with rice noodles which i don't like but they are always happy to replace it with Hokkien Noodle when i request it.
yes.. i think it's better to have curry mee with the yellow noodles instead of rice ones. well, u should try authentic laksa whenever u have the chance to visit malaysia or singapore... but not right now tho... 'coz of H1N1 LOL!!!
And over in the Eastern Malaysian states of Borneo where I hail from, we have our own version of laksa: Kuching or Sarawak laksa (very popular in Sabah as well). The soup has a consistency similar to laksa lemak but milder, mostly consisting of a sambal belacan base as well as other ingredients not typical of other laksa variants, and traditionally served with rice vermicelli only.
And of course, the Singaporeans also have their own take on laksa as well.
there are 3 different kinds of laksa they are Singapore laksa, curry laksa & asam laksa both curry n asam laksa is from Malaysia.Reporting from Singapore ...lol this is the Malaysian kind of laksa...not as spicy as the Singapore's laksa
Singapore laksa is essentially a variant of the "curry laksa" you mentioned, which is in fact laksa nyonya or laksa lemak. The "curry laksa" mainly sold in the West doesn't taste like the authentic laksas found in Malaysia and Singapore. What we watched was curry mee, and I was quite surprised that Maeve got her to demonstrate a subpar recipe like this, when I've seen more complex stuff on the same show.
And a typical preparation of assam laksa is spicier then a typical Singaporean laksa.
there is a different between curry laksa & asam laksa. That should be curry laksa since they add in coconut milk. i guess in Penang & other penisula Malaysia cooking laksa can be in many different way. that quite straightforward way for any laksa lover.
This is not even the original coconut-based laksa, for that matter. The original laksa is known as "Laksa Lemak" or "Laksa Nyonya". As many have pointed out, this is basically the "curry mee" or curried noodles which also exists in Malaysia, but sold as laksa in the West.
In the West, curry noodles is commonly sold as "laksa", and most people seem to have this preconception that laksa is essentially = curry + coconut milk + noodles. How dead wrong are they.
This oriental ladys accent is difficult to understand. She eats some of her words. What is the stuff she added after the coconut milk. Are those "fish balls" Can someone help, please.
Fish balls mate, and after that it's Fried tofu puffs cut in half. That's an Australian accent mate she speaks with however her volume is a little quiet.
I happen to use that exact Laksa paste, and yes, there is lemongrass, galangale, garlic, shallot all in it. But sure if you have those on hand slice up some fresh and include in your laksa.
I made laksa yesterday by accident :P there was this recipe of "thai tofu soup" on the net: lemon grass, ginger, cathyme lime leaves, stock, coconut cream, fish sauce and of course tofu - strangely it turned out to be laksa ^^~ well taste similar from my local thai restaurant anyway. It was amazingly quick and easy to do :)

Asam Laksa DO NOT use coconut milk/cream!!!!! And DO NOT have fishballs or that square thingy (cut in half), or even prawns....
Please do not put the title as MALAYSIAN LAKSA... since in Malaysia we HAVE different type of LAKSA cooking... it differs from region to region...
This one looks MORE like CURRY MEE (MEE KARI) in Malaysia.... (cont.)
