I would suck up the extra weight and carry this over my M4. Its a shame the military didn't put the time in to fix whatever they found wrong with it and kept it around.
@BigChiefMike They still keep it around as a sniper rifle and modernized it a bit. However, there are some things you can never fix. The M14 is still a heavy rifle compared to the M16 and nothing can really change that. Also, the amount of ammo a soldier can carry with a M14 is more limited compared to a M16. Nothing can change that either.
@esh325 haha i know they still have it im in the Army. and i know the weight and ammo wouldn't be fixed (although the modern M14 is a little lighter than the standard rifle)
My teacher was in the army during Vietnam and said he prefers the m14 over the m16 he said the m16 jammed a lot, and did not have the same killing power
@TheSpaniard1521 Your teacher was absolutely right. I was an Infantryman in the Army and did a tour to Iraq. I carried around an M4 and I can tell ya, unless you kept it immaculate you had a good chance for malfunction. Later in the deployment I was giving the job of squad designated marksman and giving a modified M14. It was a way better weapon. That thing became my baby and eventually I just started leaving my M4 in the tent with the guys not on patrol and carried my M14 everywhere.
@wwood14 The difference actually is not in the propellant, the real change is actually an airspace. The extra half inch of the .30-06 was due to it originally being designed as the .30-03 round for the springfield 1903 rifle. The .30-03 used an outdated, less powerful propellant and was replaced by the .30-06. Since the machines already existed to produce .30-03, they just continued using the cases, with a half inch of space behind the bullet. The M14 round simply does away with the airspace
@mgibbs88 Well I read that the experience of the American soldiers in WWII showed that the 30-06 was too long and abit too overpowered for a round of its own. Then they had the T20 test rifle and various test batches where 2 candiates were selected the T14 and the T15 from the T44 via the T25/T24 test rifles - the M14 was chosen and if one thinks about it its an M1 but with more clips and a same caliber round but abit shorter whilst still retaining characterisits of a traditional rifle :)
Cue to 7.55 - that bolt roller cam is the weak link in the rifle design. It is held on by a cheap c-ring spring. If for some reason the bolt roller binds in the op-rod and it pops off - the rifle is now inoperable requiring a special tool to fix. When Ruger copied the design for the Mini-14 rifle, he dropped the roller cam making it a solid part of the bolt assembly.
I didn't know until I watched this video that rounds could be added in 5 round clips through the top of the M-14.. A good idea when you don't know how many rounds are left in the magazine.
i like fal too, but the fn in its versitility vs the 14 in its reliablility, one attribute clearly out weights the other, dont get me wrong i love fn fal, DSA is kicking ass with there stg, but the backlash being the r1's and l1's of the world that cramped fal style, CAI doesnt help either, but the way i see it, in its most basic form (m14 vs fn fal) 14 is more classic and reliable, and in its most advanced form (EBR socom2 vs sa 58) 14 just out performs fal in every catigory minus cost.
@lookatthewholepictur well I think the M1 was a great battle implement, better than the 1903 by far. But, there were Nuclear bombs and V2 rockets around. I think that those were more powerful implementations
@zellarsDD777 1. We didn't have V2 rockets, the Nazis did, they made a big fear factor impact were they were mostly just that considering how inaccurate they were. Secondly the Nuke has always in my mind been more of a weapon of peace than a weapon of War.
@lookatthewholepictur I didn't say that V2's were American, I very well know they are German. Personally, I see the nuke not at all a weapon of peace. I see it as a weapon of fear, stalemate, and mental war. I many times wish it was never developed, but technology cannot be restrained from advance.
Memories....I watched this and almost fell asleep from the monatone speaker just like when I saw this in the Corps. Some things never change. The M14 / M1a is still an excellent rifle, they just need better training films. Semper Fi
@GohModley M14 is the best rifle, FAL is the best full auto battle rifle, and the M16, in my opinion, the XM16E1 with the full chrome line barrel is the best assault rifle.
I love the claim this gun could replace all the others. They ignored the fact that it was too light for sustained automatic fire on par with the BAR, too powerful for accurate automatic fire on par with the M3, & too big to match the handiness of the M2. The only gun it really was an improvement on was the M1 Garand. However, this is a great video because it shows how incredibly complex guns are. They are not just simple mechanical devices but marvels of engineering.
It wasnt meant to be the perfect replacement for all the weapons... They also needed to simplify it and go with one weapon and one ammo, not just to be a replacement... with proper training this rifle is plenty accurate on full auto.
The M14 would have been a good rifle for WW2, because it was very outdated compared to other contenders like the STG44 and AK-47 which used intermediate cartridges.
@hammerdrop30 One shot stop rating at 99.9%? Where did you read it? There is no magical one shot stop bullet out there. I should have said it was outdated as an infantry rifle. It has a purpose today as a designated marksman rifle. The M1 Garand was a great rifle, but we're lucky the Germans didn't field large numbers of STG44's, which had much great firepower.
@hammerdrop30 Doesn't matter how many, it was the idea of the 7.92x33 that spread like wild fire. The only reason NATO was using the 7.62x51 was because of America's dumb choice. All the European countries had the idea of adopting an intermediate cartridge after WW2, but they didn't adopt it because of NATO.
@esh325 So your saying over 95 countries adopted the 7.62x51mm because they didn't want to? Rifles play differrent roles. If I was in combat and the enemy was at 500 meters, I'll take the m14. You can have the STG44 or AK-47 maybe you can hit a barn at 300 meters.
@hammerdrop30 The US mandated to NATO that they had to. The British wanted to adopt the EM2 rifle in 7x43mm. The Belgians originally built the FAL for 7.92x33 kurtz and 7x43mm. The AK and sTG44 can shoot fine out to 300m's, if the shooter is good. It's all the shooter.
@hammerdrop30 And all the European countries dumped their 7.62x51 rifles as infantry rifles for 5.56x45 rifles. So it's safe to say that they were forced.
whats better during the Vietnam era m14 or m16.

@wwood14 same power in a smaller case. the M1's .30-06' round is 7.62x63mm. The M14's round is 7.62x51mm, half an inch shorter.
