  • Brian May is the singer... don't u recognize him???

  • 3:03, it's not Freddie either '-'

  • Brian May

  • Didn't World War II begin in 1939?

  • @Jiltedin2007 Not really.

  • @JGBrands But it did! It began with the Germans invading Poland on September 1, 1939. Technically, World War II began in 1939.

  • @Jiltedin2007 Yes, WWII did begin in 1939... why you've been told otherwise I don't know.

  • @LordHillaryJoice

Because I was mislead to believe that it was not the case.

  • @Jiltedin2007 That is arguable, there are many possible dates which could signify the begin of the Second World War, 1939 is the commonly agreed date though. But it could also be earlier when Japan invaded China, as Japan was part of WWII.

  • @JGBrands You may have a point. But remember, World War II was started by those Nazi Germans led by Adolf Hitler, who was actually planning this since he came into office in 1933 taking back the land that the Germans had allegedly lost from the Treaty of Versailles. Starting with Poland, and the moving on to Holland, Belgium and France. The Nazi Germans invaded Western Europe.

  • @Jiltedin2007 That is true, but there are more dates that could be seen as the start, there is no real 'start' that everyone will agree on. That's why I said: "Not really."

@LordHillaryJoice Why? Because perhaps I've studied history more thoroughly than you have.

  • @JGBrands Yeah we all know a lot of confusing shit was happening around then, but the fact remains that the war was 1939-1945. Just check any monument you see around..

  • @JGBrands I know, like the Japanese invasion of China in 1937 perhaps? While the Germans were taking over Western Europe, the Soviets were going after the Eastern Half of Europe while the Japanese were dominating the Pacific.

Ah yes, the "Good ol' days" of Mussolini, Stalin and Hirohito to join a Crazy Idiot like Hitler to cause World Chaos. And the United States wanted no part of it until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

  • 0:36 What is Roger Waters doing down there?

  • 7 people hates brian may

  • @delinellychan 7 people hates music.

  • @delinellychan be honest, who would hate him? they all probably accidentally pressed the dislike button

  • Oh 39' is a nice sweet song, in an interview Brian May tells his idea about it: he imagined in the distant future a folk artists looking back and telling a story in a nice folk song about space travelers, he wondered how these 2 seemly incompatible concepts would go together, the result is a very uncommon (for this age) song, I'm sure in 2-5000 years from now, folk artist will sing songs like '39 in the forest moon of Endor.

  • @rogeroga I think that I read somewhere that these space travelers accidently traveled one hundred years into the future or something like that. It really is a great song.

btw, when does the narwhal bacon?

  • @rogeroga Wow. That concept is amazing... makes me love this song even more :D

  • so unlike any other song by them

  • @SackOJingos Have you heard Long Away?

  • Ne'er looked back, never feared, never cried! Freddie you will live forever in our hearts. May your soul rest in peace!!

  • listen the cover of this song from, Hangar a Brazilian band.

  • One of their many masterpieces!!!!

  • Timey travel ;)

  • I wander if Brian reads any of these comments. If you do read this Brian, please reply. I love your song. I also love astronomy, like you!

  • Brian may can also sing very well like Mercury, but performing....

  • A great song about relativistic space travel by astrophysicist Brian May.

  • @TRALFAZ2500 That is quite possibly the greatest concept for a song ever. ITS SO SNEAKY.

  • is one of the best ! Ty brian

  • ええよ~ 最高!!

  • Happy birthday Freddy :D

  • One of my faves!

  • favorite queen song... my dad met them back in new york when he was like 18... he got a jacket signed by them

  • @bellamarley97 Your dad is such a lucky bastard.

  • catchy tune!!

  • my fovurite

  • A beautiful song, one of the best by Queen.

  • Six peoples looks this video and put dislike... i call that people IDIOT

  • I have this album. Great album!!!!!

  • A song about relativistic time dilation without sounding ultra-nerdy? Must be the awesomeness that is Queen.

  • resacosix en la barra...

  • @Supertomiman jaja de ley, con mucha razon se me hacia tan tan conocida

  • I'm sad that I'm not born in that good old time, pity me

  • '39 is, IMO, probably one of the most underrated songs by Queen.

  • @Erdnax13 It's funny how little people realize the meanings of their songs. I was watching a documentary with my mom today, it was the most beautiful yet sad thing I've seen in a while. In honor of Freddie Mercury, a fantastic talent, my kids will know these songs.

  • @EclairMorrowind136 They all were fantastic talents really. This song is Brian May's baby.

  • @PassiveSmoking Yeah i know.

  • @Erdnax13 agree

  • @Erdnax13

  • mn Roger;D how the fuck ist that possible to get so hugh:D

  • Whats up with the pics of the imposter Freddies?

  • It always surprises me just how good a singer Brian was. I love this song.

  • 5 sad F**kers How very dare they

  • Very cool!

    :D

  • Guys, this song is about special relativity. A space ship flies from earth @ close to the speed of light... it comes back 100 years later, but the people on the ship have only aged one year.

Yes, Brian May has a real PhD in Astrophysics.

"Though I'm older but a year..."

The world's only relativistic folk song.

(Thank you, father, for explaining this for me XD)

  • @RinNotMiku ööh, didn´t know,me loco

  • It's funny. They disguised an immensely sad future based story with a pretty sad WWII based one...

Everything fits with WWII being the focus (though "land that our grandchildren new" is kind of confusing), but it's actually about a crew of spacemen who take off to find new worlds since Earth is getting over-populated (in 2139), and because of how fast they traveled they each aged 1 year, whereas when they returned to Earth 100 years had passed.

  • A Night at the Opera is a seriously underrated album, I think it's overshadowed due to Bohemian Rhapsody becoming such a huge song on it's own.

In my opinion, this song has so much more to it than B.Rhapsody does. The way they create the sci-fi/folk fusion epitomises Queen's unique qualities as a band.

  • This song is great and also really fun to play on the guitar =)

Another masterpiece by Queen. Love them

  • incredible song,incredible vocals

  • Disliking Queen is Blasphemy!!!!! No other talented geniuses can compare to Queen. 99.9% of bands out there have one sound; one style. Queen has one style called perfect and genre of all and any! Rock, jazz, country, folk, ballad, opra, salsa, swing. They have no equal. Watch American Idol... Some people try to compare themselves to freddy, which is an insult. Nobody in recorded history has been their match other than Mozart, Amadeus, Bechelli. Freddy's vocal range, stage presence...

  • @ehelibuff73 Well the Beatles also did all of that don't insult amazing musicians because you hold one above the other, keep an open mind when talking about music or any subject.

  • @Nowscaric I'm not trying to insult other great artists at all. The beetles were also legend. The stuff people play today is mostly crap and the new youths don't know what real talent is. I have the greatest respect to the true beautiful musical artists.

  • its Roger Taylor's song!!!!! - and his vocals, too!

  • @wembley6642 lol it' s not Roger's song, it's Brian May song :) man

  • its Roger Taylor's song!!!!!

  • Another hella underrated song. Pure awesomeness. And, on the other hand, another slideshow. This was made in 2008...so...WHY?

  • A band called the Swingin' Utter do an excellent cover of the song. Very true to the original, no attempt to put their stamp on it, more like a tribute. Worth checking out if you like the orignal.

  • I... think I prefer Brian's songs to Freddie's. THERE, I SAID IT.

  • @Lazersetcetera Don't worry, same goes to me. Sure Freddie is a genius, but there's something about Brian's songs that I prefer :)

  • @Lazersetcetera Well they were kind of like Lennon and Mcartney.

  • Seems like understood the meaning of the song correctly. Yeah, this song would be favourite of the space travelers.

  • @StG45m What the hell does that mean ?

  • @manwithouthat44

It means that the first time I heard this song, I thought it was about space.

    I was right.

  • God this song hits me so deep. Lost summers, sailed across the milky seas with lost friends..... this makes me sentimental and nostalgic

  • i believe this is the first song mainly sung by May, in chronologhycal order, this and Good Company

  • @alicecooper19isback no, Someday One Day is earlier at least.

  • hammer

  • 39' means the centuries this song will be heard

  • The best song of the world

  • brians not the greatest singer but he sings this song so emotional

i can't sing along without start crying :)

  • 4 people cant count

  • who are these people, cruel enough to dislike thos song?

  • @arzamond Yeah, I wish they could just tell us why. I can't wait to hear what they have to say to explain their point of view one day ! Thumbs up if you agree !

  • @arzamond Justin Bieber fans

  • @arzamond Dont be cruel :P

  • @arzamond Me.

  • @arzamond ass holes, just ass holes

  • @arzamond Those who dislike '39 aren't "cruel", just stupid)))))

  • geieeeelll

  • WTF @ 1:12-1:22 ?

It's not Freddie on this picture.

  • 1:32 EPIC

  • Comment removed

  • The photos where they all are young are heartbreaking!

And the 4 dislikes must be from justin beiber fans. LOL

  • 39 from queen, old like a tree from Phudys :D like this sound

  • I wish this particular song had gotten more notice. It's perfect.

  • This awesome song isn`t typical Queen song, isn`t it? It seems like early Rolling Stones, or The Beatles. But it`s one of the best song I`ve ever heard :)

  • This is one of my most favorite Queen songs!!! And a very good slide show too! Thanks so much! I wonder who are the 4 "dislike" idiots? LOL

  • Only Brian May could write such a beautiful love song about Einsteinian physics.

  • @TheLinz78 ?????

  • @HelenaVanCity It's about how if you travelled in space at close to the speed of light, you could be away for a year in your own time, but 100 years would have passed on Earth, and everyone you knew would be dead. I promise, I did physics at university.

  • @TheLinz78 That much physics I know, hon, even though I am an English major)))) I've just been trying to figure out how Einstein's theory relates to this song, or rather, the other way around. LOL I've never looked at '39 from this angle, you know. Do you know the story behind this song, or is it just your guess? Thanks.

  • @HelenaVanCity Yeah, it's accurate. And pretty obvious when you look at the lyrics keeping in mind May is astrophysicist

  • @HelenaVanCity There's an ep of a documentary -- Making of Classic Albums -- about A Night at the Opera, in which Brian and Roger talk about it. It's on Youtube somewhere.

  • @TheLinz78 Thanks! I'll look it up. I've always thought that '39 was about first European settlers in America, in the early 1700's))) Although "in the year of '39" makes little sense in this context... Thanks for the education)))) Cheers!

  • @HelenaVanCity It always seemed to me that the lyrics are intentionally ambiguous...space travel is never explicitly metioned, so your appraisal is reasonable enough! And the juxtaposition of folk music and sci-fi is an odd one, so don't worry about not spotting the meaning, I don't think I would have, had I not read/heard about it.

  • @TheLinz78 Hell yeah! "In the year of '39" and space travel - go figure out! LOL But this is one thing we love about Queen, apart from the amazing music, - their weird lyrics. And I mean weird in a good sense, as they often puzzle you and make you think...

  • @HelenaVanCity Yeah, I've been a bit of a fan for about 15 years, but only just got around to listening to all the album tracks, not just the hits. Their lyrics are remarkably intelligent and multi-layered. Now I'm a MASSIVE fan! It's a great feeling to get into a band with such a big and varied back-catalogue.

  • WARNING!!!!!!! this song is addictive...

  • i've listed almost ten times strait today, yeaaaah

  • There are 4 stupid people here.

    Queen will live forever <3

  • @AJaintedMan

    nope not even them

  • this song is amazing

  • Brian May is singing here!

  • Whats the dislike button doing here?

  • @1baronnorab1 It's here specially to detect idiots. Like an IQ test, you know)))))))))))))

  • @1baronnorab1 His lost in his way for "Baby baby" Good luck dislike button!

  • A# I mean. Lol

  • Well.. On any octave on the keyboard, B is the fifth white key and Ab/Bb is the last black

  • Queen ç_ç Freddie ç_ç T H E B E S T

Nothing else to say. I love him ç_ç

  • da kann ich nur zu stimmen, einfach genial

  • Would you believe I clicked on another video of this that left out the instrumental ending, so I had to come to this one just to hear the proper ending? Thank you! I was actually in pain until then!

  • My favorite country song <3

  • Shit Roger's vocals on this are insane... Lol He's singing in the fifth octave at least lol.

  • @britton69

I think the note he hit here was Ab5, only 4 semitones away from the 6th octave :P

I'm pretty sure he hit C6 in another song on A Night At The Opera though xD

  • @TheDarkFrontier I bet that other song is Bohemian Rhapsody.

  • @cparkes92

Oddly enough I don't think it was, I think the note he hit on Bo Rap was Bb5. I think C6 was on one of the lesser - well known ones, for lack of a better term, like Seaside Rendezvous or something. I'm pretty sure its not that one, just an example :-)

  • @TheDarkFrontier Is Bb5 really close to the sixth octave?

  • @cparkes92

Very, two semitones further and you'd hit C6 :)

  • @cparkes92 It's literately on the very top of the fifth octave on a keyboard. So.. It's one key away, basically.

  • El hombre q sale en el minuto 3.00 NO ES FREDDIE MERCURY..

  • El hombre q sale en el minuto 3.00 NO ES FREDDIE MERCURY..

  • 1:12 and 3:00 it's not Freddie!

  • Great harmony.Sounds like they collaborated with Arthur C Clark.

  • 4 people are stuck in the future.

  • Queen's music always picks me up when I have a really shitty day (like today) :-s or if I need to just cry (like today..lol) and even when I feel happy. Queen's music has really opened pandora's box for me as far as music. I always find myself comparing other bands to Queen, which isn't necessarily fair to the other bands :-), but Queen has really set the tone for all the type of music that I listen to.

  • Thank you for not missing out the ending.

  • There aren't many bands that had Queen's stylistic range or flat out skill.

Every. Damn. Track. on this album and a Day at the Races is in a completely different style. They were obviously having a blast doing it, too, and the fun shines through.

And beyond that, their stuff actually had style, and grace, and even beauty.

  • @50srefugee I hate being the guy to say 'This', but god damn, you said everything that needs to be said. I honestly think Queen peaked at this album, it's brilliant.

  • Excelente canción

  • Still, my favorite track from that album.

  • The Beatles of the 70's!!!
