Google "amc v8 oil line Mod". Cheap-ass engine saver. My junkyard Grand wagoneer 360 (w/96k) was $250 w/all ancillary parts, ie..steer pump, alternator, exhaust, fan, water&fuel pumps, flexplate and I converted the York A/C to an onboard air compressor for $30!. The nickel content is so high that I didn't even have to bore it out, just hone it. Although the cam bearings fell apart upon disassembly. The truck avenger (remanned) is best for off road& got more hp. Seriously, check Kennedy out 1st.
The 304 is limited by small valves. I took mine out and built a 360. 150 hp @ 2500 vs 381 @ 5500. The Comp Cams 292H is a 2500-6000 rpm setup, and the engine is more of a Hot Rod than the woods creeper it used to be. Now it's burn outs instead of just binding up the springs!
you can hear my amc 360 .040 488*/488* mild cam 2 chamber flowmasters in my 74 Javelin/AMX on my profile page this sounds good but wheres the result numbers at?
368 peak power 386 torque just letting you know I did visit your site nice have a super day friend like to see more amc's make it out junk yards like to crystler do a retro amc javelin or amx since there bought them out that would be cool to see but it will never happen I know anyways enjoyed the visit
That is nice. I have a 401 in an 84' CJ-7. I would like to go with the aluminum heads and build it some. I am impressed with the way that motor you built turns the RPM's.
I have a 74 CJ5 w/304. how expensive is it to rebuild an AMC V8 and can an AMC 304 be hotrodded? Everybody says get rid of the 304 as AMC is expensive to build and 304's can't be hotrodded. Instead swap it for a small block chevy. Not sure how smooth that swap would go. I would like to keep it all AMC but 360's , 390's and 401's are getting hard to come by.
i just rebuilt my 74 304 in my cj. i had it bored .30 over got an edelbrock cam with intake and 600 cfm carb gm hei distributor. it all cost about fifteen hundred total.
I would go with a 360 or 401 for the parts are more readily available. You can hot rod anything! The easiest to build is a 401 for there is an abundance of parts for them. I would not put a 350 in a Jeep. It's easy to do but it will be a half breed and I just don't favor that. Put a built AMC in it and it will be something to appreciate. You can put a Chevy 350 in basically anything, so be different.
@kennedyperformance: Agree. My 360 w/comp cams Magnum 292H, Bulltear forged pistons, roller rockers, GM HEI, tons of headwork, Steel I beam rods, and a well groomed crank, Edelbrock Air Gap, Truck avenger 670cfm got me 412 hp@6100. Kennedy here can build this cheaper than anybody, knows more HP tricks, and has the BEST AMC rep in the biz! Have him do you a 300hp 360. Wish I found out about him b4 I started doin' this myself! The 360 has longer rods than the 350=more tq.
i met a gut at the local mud bog with a built 304 in his cj-5, he did better than the many chevy powered jeeps there. he had that thing running stronger than my 360 which is fairly strong.

304 . . . ya you can make the 304 turn some power, but the 290-343-360-390-401 will turn more and are NOT expensive to build !
AMC offered lots of go fast parts from the factory, as well as the after market has plenty of good fast parts too . . .
