@Parmella actually the death masks go waayy back. They had purpose at the time, which they thought would help prevent sickness, hwich would be a hole nother creepy story inandofitself...

They were actually originally made in Rome during the days of the Republic. Rich nobles had the masks made of their deceased ancestors, and when ever there was a funeral in the family, the family had a large public funeral, where actors would where the masks of deceased relatives and the family would pay to reenact the lives and glory of that particular family. It was very important to the Romans that their family story lived on.
