@Cuntfinger, Ben Gardner was presumably one of the fisherman trying to catch the shark. Prsumably, he was out at night so he wouldn't have to deal with the antics of the other fisherman, and then the shark attacked his boat and presumably at half of him. What was left in the boat was free food for any other sea creatures.
@1Morey I don't know what you mean by Ben Gardner was 'presumably' out at night; We actually see Ben Gardner in the film during the day. First, he's the man who helps Hooper out of the boat (Hooper's/Dreyfuss' very first scene in the film), where Hooper says, 'Hello', and Ben Gardner replies, 'Hello back there young fella, how are ya?' And yes, we do see this same man talking while out with all the other fisherman searching for the shark during the day time. So we don't know when he died.
When we get them silly bastards down in that rock pile, it'll be some fun, they'll wish their fathers had never met their mothers. When they start takin' their bottoms out and slamming into them rocks, boy
@NemeanLion I remember that dialogue and it still doesn't make much sense. "When they start takin' their bottoms out and slamming into them rocks, boy" :S
Does anyone know if they ever did the scene when Ben Gardner gets attacked? There's no deleted scene in the DVD set, yet on the actual soundtrack there is a track titled "Shark Attack" a couple tracks before "Ben Gardner's Boat". Was curious if anyone knew if they actually filmed this as most (if not all) soundtracks are cut in front of the actual running film.
@JTProductionsChannel Yea, it's not severed, but it's on a "quite weird angle" the head is towards his shoulder. I bet the second time they show the head is made afterwards, because it's not like the first one. In original version when Hooper was examining the tooth, the head appeared then, and Hooper looked up and saw it.
It's not his head. It's the flashlight Hooper was holding which he drops. Ben's head is still attached to his body. It's like the body is floating in the bottom of the boat and rolls over toward the hole in the hull. Speaking of which...where the hell IS the head in this clip??
Oh it looked like his head and it is? I thought he had his body eaten by the shark because of the wrecked boat but who knows and the head was cut out haha.
Yeah, I used to think so too. It looks like the head when you first watch. But during an interview with one of the writers, Carl Gottlieb, he said that the idea is that the boat was attacked and Gardner died of a heart attack. If you watch a REAL clip of this, with the head still there, you'll see it's still attached to his body. But I agree. A great movie. That scene is even eerie WITHOUT the head!
This scene was re-shot in the editor's pool after a poor reaction during a test screening.

This isn't the scene I remember when a decapitated head roles out of the boat. I first this one when I was a kid and remeber it graphically.

@MKLT75 It's not seen on this video, because the maker of this cut the head off the video... Watch the other Ben Gardner videos here :)
