  • i'm a hearing person and I cannot concieve that there would be any form of task on the planet that a deaf person could not handle giving the right training

  • I just start to learn ASL recently, am hard of hearing. I can sign some simple words now. I joined a great deaf daing site, ----Deafornot dot c om----, and met some good deaf/HOH friends over there. They help me to learn ASL.

  • HOLY SHIT THIS UPLOADER GETS IT!!! I've been trying to watch videos about cochlear implants, and there's tons of deaf folks signing their opinions. But of course there's no transcript, or voiceover, so I don't know what they are saying.

  • Wow. Just going through all of her Interviews on youtube Jack has been with her a long time, Way to go Marlee. You are the best.

  • Marlee, THIS IS EXCELLENT! THANKS!

  • A well-a bird, bird, bird

    B-Bird is the word

    A well-a bird, bird, bird

    B-Bird is the word...

  • @happihippie70 I understand exactly how you feel. I am incredibly over qualified for my minimum wage job but the only work I've gotten is work where the client can't see me. I was once told "We get so busy here we run! we run!." The Office was just a little bigger than a closet. The people who understand what we go through are other people with disabilities so we should look out for each other and not fight among ourselves about petty differences. Who needs more discrimination? Not me!

  • I have a lot of job interviews where people talk down to me. A lot of people seem to think this is OK because "They mean well". There was a time when it was common for people to talk down to someone because as a female or an ethnic minority, they were perceived as less intelligent. Do you think that was OK because the ignorant people meant well? It is never OK to talk down to anyone.

  • Dont give up. If you knock on enough doors you will find someone who isnt ignorant. Its hard and discouraging. Ive been fired twice because people didnt feel comfortable seeing me and not because of the quality of my work. I worked my way through school delivering flyers while walking on a cane because it was a job I could get over the phone. When they saw me they tried to get rid of me but after 4 years they told me I was 1 of only 2 reliable people they ever had.

  • I love Marlee Matlin! I applaud her for message in this video, her boldness, her humour, and the fact that her public image obliterates the disabled stereotype of being weak, fragile, incompetent and passive.

I had a job interview this morning where I was treated like a valid candidate for the job and not like an undesirable to be handled and gotten rid of. I know some day being treated like a valid candidate will be the norm and not the exception.

  • This is a video about disabilities and deaf actress Marlee Matlin ist talking in sign language. Her interpretor is translating into English. But where is the closed caption????

  • @Chris1983w: CC has been added. Unfortunately we do not have the entire collection of ILO TV's videos with Closed Captions, but we want to let you know that we are working on the improvement of our web-based platforms in order to be consistent with our principles of equity, not only for the deaf and hard of hearing people, but also for Non-English speakers.

  • I am Hearing also I am a CODA (child of deaf adults) being deaf or hard of hearing is NOT a handicap or a disability.. my father worked hard all his life.. my folks dont believe they are handicapped or disabled... so please QUIT calling it a Handicap or a Disability...

  • @knockoutdad01 Thanks for snubbing handicapped/disabled people and implying we don't work hard. I hadn't been discriminated against enough already.

If you walk in a room and people treat you like you're different because your body doesn't work the same as theirs don't burn the only people who truly know how it feels!

  • great video :0)

  • I am deaf biker since birth that I cannot hear. So I fluent America Sign Lanuage. Keep it simple we are being human. We already know all about other hearing people who is discrimation deaf. We are not surprised. We are very hurtful

  • She is deaf, the man in the corner is her translator

  • Comment removed

  • who you are talking about Deaf or Hearing? if you say about Deaf, take that back and I meant it...

  • im sorry but im not familiar with the term PSE. what does it mean?

  • @Griffin9857:Pidgin Sign(ed) English (PSE) is a variety or style of language that arises from contact between a Deaf sign language and a spoken language (or the written or manually coded form of the spoken language).

  • Sign Language is so beautiful, it is truely an art not just a way of communicating.

  • lol, the whole point of being disable is that you dont have to work. duh. get a clue.

  • That is good one...I like that one...I agree with that...Deaf people have human right for a job in the world...We need our lives in the future...Deaf and Hearing are really equal and the same human...Deaf people have one problem is hear that doesn't matter we can do... we are expert our eyes and skillful to do.....Hearing should understand deaf people have everythings...

  • makes me kind of want to learn ASL

  • I wish i was with HER !!

  • I am Deaf and I understand how difficult it is to get equality in the workplace. After earning my B.S. in Business Administration from a top 15 business school with a solid GPA, I have struggled to get a job suitable for my skills. This year, I finally got a job at an investment bank. My classmate is an Assistant Vice President while I have an entry-level job. I had a higher GPA and was involved more in the community while in college.

  • It's sorta freaky how her lips sync up w/ her interpreter's voice from time to time.

Which might seem like an inane observation to make. However, those moments were distracting to me and drew my attention/concentration away from her message.

Despite here impairment, I believe she would be the first to say how blessed her life has been.

I wish she and other differently abled persons all the very best.

  • That is one beautiful looking lady.

  • Excellent speech Marlee! :-) Every word is true! EQUALITY!!

  • i rlly wanna learn sign language its cool

  • dont you mean, with disabled people not diaBLED PERSONS, you#re gay

  • i am visually imapired and have scolios and this vieo is very true people look more at my disabilites then if i am cable for a job or not it upsets me but i wi keep going

  • I agree with your first point 100% I have some really witty friends who just happen to be deaf. big deal. Just means that i get to enjoy a different view of life. + learning Sign language is sweet. There are some definate perks to speaking with your hands, face and body language

  • I have to agree with Marlee, very true

  • marlee martlin

  • Although I agree that a lot of disabled people can work (even if it is from home) but we must accept that not everyone can. I spend days even weeks sometimes totally unable to move literally not a muscle. I can't get a job no employer would take on someone who would cost more to employ then they produce. I believe all disabled people deserve a fair chance but we must be realistic.

  • Marlee Matlin is an inspiration to anyone with a disability that you can do whatever you want to do, and don't let anyone tell you can't do it!

  • Marlee Matlin is the best! She does what she wants to do and doesn't let people tell her "you can't do this or that because your Deaf"

  • that's sad and so unfair; being deaf doesn't effect your hands which is what you need to draw blood (as a phlebotomist). That is discrimination.. did you try to fight it? do you have an advocate? they can do wonders

  • I am in awe watching and "listening" to his incredible person. I have developed a certain kind of high respect for her. What an inspiration. When I first watched her on TV series with Mark Harmon I had wished to hear her talk. I didn't know then she that she was deaf. May she always be in good health to continue inspiring many more. Thank you ILOTV for the post.

  • I know the feeling. I am not deaf, but I have Cerebral Palsy, mostly confined to my lower extremities. I have a four year college degree, and when I go on interviews, they always ask me stuff like "Do you think you can handle the daily rigors of this job?" I am gonna be sitting down, but they are worried about my productivity and stuff and don't care that I am educated or smart or anything. They also say "Aren't you on disability?" like I am supposed to be satisfied with that or something.

  • How bizarre - it's not (or so I assume ;-) as though you were applying to be a telephone operator.

  • I hate her. She is not "deaf" to deaf community because she tend to use voice. She don't use interpreter for a long time until many deaf people were angry and complain that she act like she belong to hearing world. She finally now use interpreter to show people that she is "100% DEAF".

  • Who are you to define what Deaf is? So my hearing impaired husband, who can speak and works with hearing people is not "Deaf"? Do you think he thinks he belongs to the hearing world? Guess what? He doesn't belong to either! Where do you fit in? Many of my Deaf friends "tend" to use voice, does that mean they are no 100% Deaf? They use interpreters, but they can work and function without them too. You hate her? You are envious I think. Stop being so angry and start fighting for what is important.

  • how can you hate someone you don't know? How has she hurt you? She has ALWAYS used an interpreter, although at times while acting she can sound out the words. Acting is not just speaking, it's body movements, facial expressions, and she has been very successful with what she uses. By the way, why doesn't she belong to the hearing world? You are saying it's okay to stick someone in a category and they can't branch out? And she is 100% deaf!

  • well, i think you should google her website.

  • I feel for you, but relax, if your prejudiced against in your life, that person who was judging you is probably like that in many other things. They'll get their due.

But for petes sake, don't start judging deaf people yourself, that's hypocritical.

  • Whoa whoa whoa. Wait a minute.

Why are you jumping to conclusions? Marlee DOESN'T ALWAYS USE HER VOICE! Google it. She uses it on and off, it just depends on whenever she likes. From a personal experience, I can talk and it's nice to be able to talk because it allows you to have some freedom. I have profound hearing loss and been through speech therapy throughout my entire life. Think about it, at least she knows sign language, better than nothing at all and being oral. What do you think?

  • Marlee Matlin is just plain BRILLIANT. Not only that but she's also a very compassionate person. I'm glad that people like her still exist.

    MARLEE MATLIN RULES!

    I LOVE HER! (for real!)

  • Her interpreter's name is Jack Jason, and the two have been working together for more than 20 years.

  • Support decent work!

  • i can't put into words just how much i love marlee. she's such an inspiration to me and i'm sure many others...i'm so in awe of everything she's accomplished!

  • watching her sign is so beautiful and graceful.

  • Y does the interpreter say says things before Marlee can sign it?

  • Because he is rrading from a script.

  • Marlee is amazing

  • YAY MARLEE!

    she's such an inspiration!

with her now on dancing with the stars, i know she's gonna spread awareness and continue proving people with disabilities can be just as good, and even better than those without.

  • this was SOOOOOO good =) question for ReneeT60 how has she matured?? i never saw the academy award so i was just wondering why you said that =)

i love watching marlee sign =) she's so awesome.

  • I've met deaf people who dont sign all that great. Not her though, she signs very good.

  • Am surprised that no protest about wording "disabled" by Deaf that do not like to be called as Disabled...

  • Wow! Marlee is a beautiful young lady to achieve and has alot to offer. She is right - nothing is impossible - we all can do and get jobs to overcome discrimination!!!

  • January 18, 2008

Marlee Matlin gives an excellent message. She has matured a lot since winning the Academy Award 28 years ago.

  • January 18, 2008

Marlee Matlin's message is excellent and she represents the disabled well. She has matured so much since winning the Academy Award.

  • Yes, look at what an individual can do not because of what s/he have. Deaf people are known as better workers since they tend to get the job done faster.

  • Excellent message. Well made. I just hope that would make a significant change in public's perception of deaf people.
