@MrEyebrowz Yeah well neither did I for the first 5 years but playing this fast with only 3 fingers is just insane, especially with pentatonic speed runs because the stretches involved are crazy.
@MarshallVamp He has a torn tendon in his index finger, which to his advantage allows him to stretch further on the fretboard. That's why he hardly uses his pinky. Chris Poland is a very unique guitar player and he is what got me into jazz fusion.
@zzzhuh Chris fit the early Megadeth albums perfectly but I think it's safe to say that Marty is the only guy who ever should have played on Rust in Peace and Countdown. Those exotic scales and arpeggios are just perfect.
@codebabe Poland did 3 songs off of rust in piece and then Marty based the solo's on the album off of what Chris did, I think he would of done just fine on R.I.P but it's the addiction that separated them :/
@zzzhuh I know he did the demos, but imo they aren't that great compared to what he's capable of. Marty's solos are really quite different from his. Chris didn't use the long major arpeggios the way marty did and even the bluesy stuff is different. Main point is I don't think Chris is better than Marty. They're just different.
@codebabe I will respect your opinion but I would really encourage you to listen to the guitar tracks for peace sells and listen to how clean, crisp, and how unique his phrases are. Marty is a great player but for me the first two megadeth records blow R.I.P and countdown out of the water.
@zzzhuh My reason for thinking Peace isnt as strong is that the tracks bleed together.ie The Conjuring, Bad Omen, Devil's Island, and My Last words start out the same and venture into similar territory. Ominous melodic guitar arpeggios, then straight ahead into punky speed metal. RIP has a more proggy-exotic quality and the individual tracks stick out more. They vary moreso in tempo and musical direction, the harmonies are more prolific and the leads are more tuneful.
@codebabe The conjuring and bad omen have 2 totally different sounds and are about 2 totally different subjects. Devil's island starts out distorted so I don't know how you correlated that into being "similar." Besides the openings are catchy and are unique especially for that time. And what you described at the end is Mega-Fucking-Deth. Not Dave M. being the druggy while Marty shines his boots. The original line up just screams metal where R.I.P just doesn't have the same effect for me.
@zzzhuh They're slow minor chord progressions that lead into similar thrash tempos. Just a tad formulaic. Btw RIP has moments that are actually a lot faster and production is heavier (ie Take no Prisoners, Holy Wars and Polaris) so I dont get how you could say it's less metal. I dont really get what you're rambling about Junky Dave and Boot shining Marty? That sounds like nonsensical raving. I'm not saying the songs aren't good I love that album, I'm just stating why I prefer Rust.
@codebabe Black Friday is just as fast if not faster, Bad omen after the first solo gets groovy and is fast as shit. And look at killing is my business, that song has so many notes in a riff that I would call it a solo and it's at a fast ass pace. And I like R.I.P but so many people just make it out to be Megadeth's best in which I disagree. It is nice to be debating with a true megadeth fan that knows about megadeth and not just "Marty Friedman" tho so I'll thank you for that.
@zzzhuh I tend to favor albums from the very late 80s and very early 90s which is probably why I dig Rust more. Marty is arguably my favorite lead player ever but I really like all kinds of guitarists. Even though I hate glam and love speed metal I found myself loving Nuno Bettencourt. Oh btw as long as we're talking about insane riffs that are practically solos, how about those bridge riffs in Hook in Mouth from So Far So Good!? I listened to that album today. Killer.
@codebabe Hook in Mouth? 502 has a pretty fast riff but Hook in Mouth is probably one of the easier Megadeth songs, Probably my favorite off that album tho.
@zzzhuh I think you're forgetting the part I'm talking about. I said the bridge riffs. They sound like solos, but they really aren't because they're repeated 2 or 3 times throughout the songs. You don't rememeber the fast shredding that Jeff does and then Dave comes in with the tapping right after?
@kostasssism It can be a good position, but everyone has their own preferences. CP's index finger can't bend quite well and has to play with his fingers flat on the fretboard.
@DimitriVHefley No problem here - I'd suggest you expand your musical horizons if you think this clip has any emotion or feeling whatsoever. It's bland. It's noodling, with wanky bends.
@herbie747 1. Chris Poland has the most unique and soulful sound on the planet. 2. You apparently do not know what soul sounds like. 3. If you don't think Chris has any soul, then don't fucking post on here, everybody else really enjoys this so you can just blow your opinion out of your deaf ass.
@herbie747 His unorthodox phrasing alone is enough to catch most people's ear. Yes, it is noodling, but if you're judging a guitar player based on his testing of a guitar, it is perhaps you who needs to expand their musical horizons.
The reason he plays like that is because when he was in high school he cuted all his fingers with broken glass, because he was soo high. Also does anyone find it wierd:
i am not being a arrogant freak but i would watch Chris Poland ripping on guitar 2000 times rather than watching all these guys like Alexi Laiho,John 5,Herman Li,
George Lynch doing fancy sweep picking,Tapping. Even George Lynch Can't match the greatness of Chris Poland.
@Chuck6360 i understand you. i belive it's because they aren't blues/jazz musicians. chris poland was before he entered megadeth. and i think he got back to jazz after he left.
@Chuck6360 Chris Poland is definetely the man, however I still think Alexi Laiho is more than a shredder. Writes incredibly melodic solos does just shred. People just always seem to think of him as a shredder, probably cause of the popularity rise in Children of Bodom with younger kidz :p
idk if polland is the best guitarist of megadeth which others prefer mart., but for me polland just fits right in megadeth. their era in megadeth (w/gar (R.I.P)) for me was megadeth at its best.
Chris Broderick is an absolutely amazing guitarist. His leads are more technical than most of what I've heard. But, Marty and Chris Poland play with more emotion. Chris B plays like a fuckin' robot, no emotion. That being said, Poland was Megadeth's best lead, and his post-Megadeth stuff absolutely kicks ass.
nice tone..i am sure he can play with feeling!.he is just shredding here..overall better than Mustaine or Dammit from Metallica,oh yes,,Jarzombek kills them all..so does Holdsworth!
@MegaYoshitsune I disagree with you and chickendancelex. I listened to both of them and I thought holdsworth was great and shawn lane was a pretty big dude but I managed to get some guitar tracks from peace sells, and the results were epic. I have peace sells, good mourning, devils island, and wake up dead, and every solo chris does on those tracks are so clean you could hear a pin drop on the ground. The fact that he plays at mach 10 and sounds that good blows everything IMO
@zzzhuh Well if you like the way Chris sounds more, then fair enough. But in terms of skill, Shawn Lane is better than just about everyone, Paul Gilbert, Buckethead, Rusty Cooley, Michael Angelo Batio and many others say this too. You should check out the 'drum and guitar solo' Shawn Lane videos, I v'e never seen anyone else play anything like that.
@MegaYoshitsune He's fast and i checked out that video and i realize it's a impro but it just has no real feel to it. But im sure there are song's he does that have a lot of emotion to it. It's like Hendrix when he plays little wing, it's not fast or anything but it's got that feeling and power towards it.
@zzzhuh He's not everyone's taste for sure, some of his later stuff in 2001-2003 was really mellow and I'd say he mixes technical skill with musicality really well most of the time. Megadeath is still awesome anyway.
@Grunge00125 I disagree. I have guitar tracks uploaded on my page with Chris Poland playing and his tone is really clean and his vibrato's are legendary so I think his styles is just unique and beyond what someone can learn.
@daw162 I never thought he was sloppy. The sloppy guy on the first album is Dave.lol But at least Dave got a lot better on Peace Sells. I always thought Chris was amazing. Hell, he's jazz fusion player, does he have a choice to not be good?lol
@MateusMustaine wont happen, dave hates this guy like theres no tomorow. he was quoted saying: Chris Poland could die tomorow and i wouldnt give a fuck
Respond to this video... I just met Chris Poland on the 16th and I wouldn't say Chris "hates" Mustaine but I think the feeling between the two is mutual. Chris is an awesome guy though, and the best Megadeth lead player ever.
@worldofurin You don't know your history then cause when the re-released peace sells recently he talks about how he is a genius on guitar and how fluent his playing is. Dave respects this guy a lot so idk where you heard that he hates him.
@worldofurin I know the song and I know the background for it but that was in the past, Dave has made piece with all of this, why do you think he had Poland come back for "the system has failed"
I feel as retarded as his hand looks when trying to fret anything down low on a les paul or similar body style guitar. I used to think his picking style looked weird (trademark of Megadeth lead guitarists) in early Megadeth videos but god what kind of hands and joints must he have to fret those kinds of things, sat down, on a LES PAUL??? crazy
"emotional" doesn't mean a fucking thing... for example maybe chris borderick plays real fast and in a very "polished" way, but maybe he just wants his guitar playing to convey a feeling of speed, harmony, or whatever ... emotion isn't only about being able to play slowly with huge bends imo
People who say Broderick has no emotion need to shut the fuck up. When you create something, you make out of your soul, that's what music is. Yea Broderick is the most advanced guitar player Megadeth ever had. Chris has plenty of feeling in his playing.
@megaluisdeth I'm sure those kind of people don't know what the fuck they're talking about anyway. It's like if a guitarist doesn't bend strings enough or play more technical than a big name guitarist or if they're not playing in a blues scale, they don't have emotion. That's obviously bullshit. Zakk Wylde is an example of a cliche "emotional" guitarist, yet I've heard way more emotion in Ron Jarzombek's playing.
@EvisceratorBand I think that what is lacking in a lot of guitarists' work is articulation, not feeling. I think I got tired of Megadeth because metal nearly has none, everything is just played with one or two tones. Broderick, you can say the man has emotion, but he has no articulation. Everything is played one way, one sound. Zakk Wylde is a masturbating mess, lol, not emotional. Look at Jeff Beck, he's the greatest example of articulation available. Its not what notes you play, but how.
I disagree I actualy met Poland at a clinic in woodinville wa he told the group that he has always been a jazz player and all his solos from megadeth on were improvised how is it not all? feeling he says that he doesn't really know theory all that well he just uses intuition. And feeling to get what he wants Marty is good to but I can't really say who's better especially live where it counts
LMAO!!! These are the most intelligent comments I have ever seen! All of them right on. Poland is as unique a player as there is. I have goosebumps (again!) just thinking about the intro "Good Mourning" off of Peace Sells...Chris & Dave's guitars on that album LITERALLY growl! Magic
WOW. 00:16 he does a harmonic slide with amazing precision. and yes those BENDS are mindblowing... at 00:18 he does this down bend that shouldn't even be in there but he makes it work.. its so fresh and colorful even if its a little bleak and gloomy. it really paints a picture and tells a story
Wow that melodic sliding he does at about 00:16 -00:17 is amazing. like no other sound ive heard. i always preferred Marty Friedman over Poland , but Poland has a feel and approach like no other. Very Unique Shredder. a style all his own
Because he was so high, he cuted his fingers with broken glass and he had to completely change his stlye of playing. But i also find it wierd that Marty broke his wrist and Mustaine injured his arm when he passed out on char and all of them had to change playing aswell.
HOLY GOD, that has to be some of the smoothest playing I've ever heard. And his phrasing is just outta here! Amazing!

@worldofurin I know the song and I know the background for it but that was in the past, Dave has made piece with all of this, why do you think he had Poland come back for "the system has failed"
zzzhuh 7 months ago
@zzzhuh good point.

@zzzhuh Poland doesn't want the money, he doesn't want to get addicted again

He could creat an album with just bending, i would be listening 24/7 to his BEAUTIFUL bends
Channel450 1 year ago
He has got something special about him, something that separates him from other guitarists! Beautiful!
Channel450 1 year ago 2
what scale is he playing in that moment 0:23
lotrringereras 1 year ago
He uses his pinky clearly in the first 10 seconds, and then again at the riff around 48 seconds. Come on guys.
atlhunt47 1 year ago
@atlhunt47 what? if you dont use your pinky you are a bad guitar player!
lotrringereras 1 year ago
@lotrringereras No. There are at least two comments saying he doesnt use his pinky at all. I was commenting on that.
atlhunt47 1 year ago
@atlhunt47 ohh ok
lotrringereras 1 year ago
how did he manage to learn the guitar without ever putting his pinky to the fretboard. thats crazy
TheExperience09 1 year ago
I feel as retarded as his hand looks when trying to fret anything down low on a les paul or similar body style guitar. I used to think his picking style looked weird (trademark of Megadeth lead guitarists) in early Megadeth videos but god what kind of hands and joints must he have to fret those kinds of things, sat down, on a LES PAUL??? crazy
codo27 1 year ago
NOBODY plays like Chris. Best thrash metal lead guitarist ever with Marty very closely behind. \m/

@jellybean1776 Great book but i tink he left out a few things like he didnt mention Poland coming back for the System has failed album!!
Ozzie9877 1 year ago
Chris Poland has the best tone of all megadeth guitar players!!!!!!!!
SHREDDER222X 1 year ago
"emotional" doesn't mean a fucking thing... for example maybe chris borderick plays real fast and in a very "polished" way, but maybe he just wants his guitar playing to convey a feeling of speed, harmony, or whatever ... emotion isn't only about being able to play slowly with huge bends imo
crocoscar1993 1 year ago
DAMN i broke a string :-/
yootesa1515 1 year ago
that is some classical technique with his thumb!
ukshrednoodle 1 year ago
People who say Broderick has no emotion need to shut the fuck up. When you create something, you make out of your soul, that's what music is. Yea Broderick is the most advanced guitar player Megadeth ever had. Chris has plenty of feeling in his playing.
megaluisdeth 1 year ago
@megaluisdeth I'm sure those kind of people don't know what the fuck they're talking about anyway. It's like if a guitarist doesn't bend strings enough or play more technical than a big name guitarist or if they're not playing in a blues scale, they don't have emotion. That's obviously bullshit. Zakk Wylde is an example of a cliche "emotional" guitarist, yet I've heard way more emotion in Ron Jarzombek's playing.
EvisceratorBand 1 year ago 5
@EvisceratorBand I think that what is lacking in a lot of guitarists' work is articulation, not feeling. I think I got tired of Megadeth because metal nearly has none, everything is just played with one or two tones. Broderick, you can say the man has emotion, but he has no articulation. Everything is played one way, one sound. Zakk Wylde is a masturbating mess, lol, not emotional. Look at Jeff Beck, he's the greatest example of articulation available. Its not what notes you play, but how.
goldenchopsticks 1 year ago
@goldenchopsticks I disagree I think both matter equally.
Whackooyzero 1 year ago
@Whackooyzero I ran out of space, what I would have liked to have wrote was its not how many notes you play, but how you play them.
goldenchopsticks 1 year ago
i think poland and broderick are the 2nd and 3th best guitar players of megadeth (mustaine is the number one )
maidenfer05 1 year ago
I disagree I actualy met Poland at a clinic in woodinville wa he told the group that he has always been a jazz player and all his solos from megadeth on were improvised how is it not all? feeling he says that he doesn't really know theory all that well he just uses intuition. And feeling to get what he wants Marty is good to but I can't really say who's better especially live where it counts

Best megadeth guitarist by soooo far. Amazing work he did and i will be ever greatful to him for releasing such great music.
mickmos 1 year ago

@thinkgeek0101 YES
GilbertFan101 1 year ago
Wow that melodic sliding he does at about 00:16 -00:17 is amazing. like no other sound ive heard. i always preferred Marty Friedman over Poland , but Poland has a feel and approach like no other. Very Unique Shredder. a style all his own
thinkgeek0101 1 year ago
Man, wouldn't it be awesome if he would go back to megadeth....
omfgitlagz 1 year ago
Does anyone know why he doesn't use his pinky? Did he mess it up when he was younger or something?
cfmetal 1 year ago
@cfmetal
Because he was so high, he cuted his fingers with broken glass and he had to completely change his stlye of playing. But i also find it wierd that Marty broke his wrist and Mustaine injured his arm when he passed out on char and all of them had to change playing aswell.
