  • can I get a synopsis? this is waaaayyy too fckn long

  • Comment removed

  • do you know what bad even in the uk we get ryan seacrest

  • yep radio sucks now that they took Q101.1 away i have no reason to own a radio anymore

  • You make me feel old. I remember when KLOR was the FM country station in Wichita Falls back when almost NO FMs would touch country.

  • We do have Goverment Radio it's called NPR.

  • most stations now don't have d j s after 7 pm its all voice track

  • the american radio stations are better than the canadian radio stations.

i find the personalities on the radio stations talks too much and when they talk, they talk nonsense

  • Hey Brian, if you don't like Drum and Bass that much, that's alright. But please check out this link about drums and breaks:

    /watch?v=5SaFTm2bcac&feature=grec_index

  • Hey Bri, I too remember NightFlight-do you remember Radio 1990 or IRS The Cutting Edge?? I think FM radio has sold out because of Mp3, Internet Radio, and Xm/Sirius. They HAVE to pay their bills no matter what and in order to do that, they take the sh*t that has some money behind it(we ALL know who these artists are-go to any music vid on Youtube and they are mentioned in comments).

We still have ONE good station in Minnesota-93X in the Twin Cities. They still play great 90's hard rock.

  • You are awesome! I hope music will be saved someday.

  • Hey, Brian. I remember Night Flight. Heard Oingo Boingo there as a single-digit aged youngster back in the day.

  • I'm one of those people you'd think would like the stuff they have on the radio. I hate it, it's been the same stuff for 2 years now I think and whenever they have something new it's played maybe twice. Lately i've been listening to internet radio's such as AFR, Lapfox Radio, and Virtual DJ Radio. Sadly I don't have anything like that for the car. I'm looking at it though. (PS I don't consider Pandora or Last FM internet radio. A program selecting random songs for only me isn't radio.)

  • My buddy was a resident mix DJ on a local station owned by Clearchannel. Up until 2000 or so you would play a 1-2 hour live set 5 times a week and there were countless good DJs spinning on the radio. You could play WHATEVER you wanted!!! Then, the moratorium on artistic expression and musical variety was issued. Absolutely nothing that is not in the program guide (99% hip hop). Absolutely no house, freestyle, jazz, spoken word, or unauthorized remixes. "We will only promote our artists" policy.

  • Totally agree about your "GAY" music comment. Some of the best mixes I've heard were at gay clubs. Nothing "GAY" about it. Just good remixes and good dj's.

  • Talking about BBC radio 1, the show by Andy and Jaymo are totally about new artists and tracks. You really should check that out. Its on thursday. from 21.00 till 22.00 GMT. That's like 5/6 Am in the Usa, :D

Artists like Allen Walker, Hugo van Dyck etc, who are all young and have Daft Punk as one of their main idol:D

  • Good video, but the comparison between American states to countries is a little ridiculous. I mean I've been to a few american cities, and maybe California is a different country but there's hardly exactly as much variation as all of bloody europe. North and South France are different too.

I'm sure even the difference between Canada the USA is less different to France and Germany.

  • Hey Brian I too am a sirius guy. Love the BPM and love the Jimmy buffet , Springsteen and Dead channels when they do concert replay's. As a DJ I have found that if someone is having a 70's or 80's themed party I will listen to 7 or 8 to help re-fresh my memory on that era's music. I've had it now for 3 years and have no idea what I would do if it goes away.

  • Hamster? Is that what they were calling it back then? j/k I agree with you 100%. todays radio is not what it used to be. Some of the stations( Non-Clear) the DJs use their own laptops with overly compressed music files and it just sounds like garbage. Granted thats a completely separate issue, but the programming as a whole has gone to hell.

  • Tampa FL Area...

Last time I enjoyed radio was 1998ish, when Mason Dixon was still on KISS FM (100.7) Around 1998, we got STAR 95.7, the last alt-rock we ever got, and it went rap post-2000.

Mason Dixon is still on, if only for short morning show on the (good) oldies channel. Everything else = automated garbage. Our 80s station (WPOI) is having an identity crisis, throwing in stuff from up to 1998. They all play the same crap anyway, as if no artist made more than three songs, from one album.

  • You LIKE Howard Stern?! He's just a crude sleazeball! I've listened to his show and I thought it was SO SAD!! Oh and on the gay note...I agree with you that it's a silly stereotype. I've had people say to me that daft punk is gay music.

  • lol, you hate trance and drum and bass, you sure you're a dj Brian?

  • On our popular music station around here play the same songs.. and only about 12 out of the top 40 during day time, then at night it kind of gets better.. and they do some nice mixes on the weekend tho.

  • I feel sorry for you. I grew up listening to WRAS, the Stereo Oddysey. It was the Georgia State University station. They played the heyday of Progressive Rock - stuff like Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, Allman Brothers Band, etc. They played album sides six times a day. Saturday afternoons were all-request.

They took DJing seriously- great segues, great programming, and their programming was all over the place.

    That was great radio.

  • I really miss the late 90's rock/alternative stations, that were locally owned.

  • Personally I'm sick of the radio, however, I can't stop listening. We have a new station here, that plays all the hits an no "old stuff" that the other big station plays. And they advertise that fact. Then they play something ten years old.

In another nearby market there is a station that "plays everything that rocks" Even stuff off of the Johny Cash American recordings. But then they stop doing that and go back into the same 40 song rotation.

  • I noticed recently that the classic rock stations here have dropped a lot of the 70s and are playing 80's hair metal now., which to me is a refreshing change.

  • Yea, I love my XM radio too! I get it for free because I work as an Installer for a stereo shop, and my account is on a demo account for the shop. I cant live without it when Im traveling.

My main channel is 202 the virus. Opie and Anthony is one good talk show. Way better then howard stern, but each has their own preference. Either way, XM/Siruis is way better then the traditional AM/FM radio. And better then HD radio.

Ps: I also like the backspin channel! 2nd favorite channel I listen too.

  • Found the perfect Gay song (if there ever was one)

    Diana Ross - I'm coming out !

  • FM radio also known as Testical Radio. It's dominated by C.B.S. or Clear Channel companies. Station managers & or programmers tell the DJ's what to regurgitate which is sad. Radio used to play all top 40 genres' & yes it was good. If you do anything original you are fired quick. I love satellite radio. Howard Stern, Bubba the Love Sponge, Ned rock on!!!

  • Try Kerrang (105.2) or BBC radio 2. Radio 2 has a great mix of new and old and great chat.

  • You have to use internet radio, i know your gona love it, especialy if you use Screamer radio, if you decide to check it out try out Radio Paradise.

  • I hate Drum N Bass too lol

  • Gay music....yeah thats weird....maybe their referring to artists such as Cher or Amber that gay people love...i dunno. That is stupid tho

  • @e56r1609 Lots of Gay people like Jazz, Country, Rock, etc. It's probably Gay Radio because it was put together by Gay people. It still seems like the way backwards, though

  • @briansredd I was just showing my fiancee portions of your vdo and that point about "gay radio" or "gay voice" hit home. I can't stand when I tell people that I like house music and they either say "oh you mean techo?" or they associate it with being gay and drugs. Umm... hello... can you say sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll??? I just feel like you that it's a stereotype and sad to say "house music" will probably never shake that stigma.

  • @briansredd Hey brian, I agree about radio. Ever sence I got the new Droid X I have been loving the fact that I can stream right from pandora . Ive got like 20 stations custom made for my likes and have never looked back to the FM dial again. In my car , up in the white mountians of NH ,where only one station sort of comes in and if I'm in the mood for a certian song I just pop onto U-tube instead and bang out anything I want. You should so get a droid. I hated FM and am now am free@ last .Ron

  • @briansredd it's probably music by homosexual artists

  • @briansredd I prefer Yag Radio for heterosexuals. Gay radio literally sucks.

  • yea we have 3fm the talk a lot but you can laugh a lot with them like the never funny the pic somthing out of the news like the gay dog than you need to text somthing funny aboud it and at the end you get the top 5 of what people send its verry funny

  • radio around here sucks. top 40 all day long. one channel with all new one with new and old top 40. i have Sirius in my 93 s-10 i love it. i cant wait till i get the windshield put back into it. I've been driving my beater truck with only stock radio and it blows.

  • So what you get lame songs heard 15 times a day for 3 months. Same thing with some of the mix shows same songs remixed, 15 times a day for 3 months, LAME!!!

  • @trukloadentdj Man, Funk Dat! Get a new DJ

  • @trukloadentdj So fuck em. Go to internet radio. I am listening to Classical Music America now on line. No commercials. No begging for money like suckydicky Minnesota Public Radio, which is a scam and is taxpayer subsidized, without taxpayer consent, by the State of Minnesota. Boycott them. Classical Music America just has a little donation box. No whinny, fruity voiced announcers. NO Gary Keillor.

  • Music today is being mass produced like "fast food", same taste and flavor wherever you go, good for fast food, but not radio!

  • Also this act allowed local radio personalities, local radio shows and local radio programmers to be replaced by national personalities, shows and programmers. Who (for the most part) doesn't have a clue on the local style.

  • The Tele-Communications Act of 1996 started the big down turn in radio. This allowed communications companies like "Clear Channel" to own and operate more than one radio station in each market(like Chicago or Milwaukee).

  • bbc radio 1 shows you make enjoy gmt mon-thurs 7-9 zane lowe thurs 9-10 in new djs weekly rotation fri-7-5 various genres of house with annie mac, pete tong, judge jules, kutski, essential mix(longest mix show on radio)

  • Hey Brian, we get about 2 hours of drum and bass on Radio 1 that's all. Fabio and Grooverider are the masters of the drum and bass too. i can't believe you don't like it, you need to listen to the bass and melodies not the fast drums as they do get a little crazy at times ..... what do you think of dubstep then ? lol ;-)

  • HD radio is a huge hype...nothing worth it IMO.

I can't stand standard radio these days. I only listen to NJ1015 around here for the two personality radio shows and that's it. All of the music is off my iPod because all the live radio just plays crud like Lady GaGa and the such.

I'll have to look into XM radio...Seemed a little expensive last time I checked into it though. I think I have enough time to update my iPod often enough to keep me entertained.

  • PIONEER AVIC :)

  • Fuck the radio!

  • What is dictating radio today is the blocks of music major labels are sending out on a quarterly basis and telling the stations this is what we want played. Of course the station has the power to dictate what they want to play but if they don't comply then chances are they will loose any good ties they have with that label. They can loose a lot of giveaway prizes like gift cards, television, trips, concert tickets, etc... Smaller labels tend to get screwed because they cant compete.

  • @evolutiondjcompany This can be seen as a new form of Payola....and YES it still occurs. I heard guys get mortgages paid, new flat screen T.V.s and so on for program directors. In doing so they will press hard to feed you with their artist as much as possible. For example and top requested songs of the day they themselves can make the list with out taking any listener request and play once again music from the label that is feeding their pockets.

  • @evolutiondjcompany

Oh I agree. It's a policy issue. Fees are VERY high (why is this? there is no big complex infrastructure for free airwaves) & they have to offset thier costs somewhere.

  • I got a little carried away and commented before the post ended. We have a government run station here in AUS which is one of the better stations. They split the week up into different genres, so each night there's a specific genre of music being played. During the day the programming is quite varied, a mix of everything but more towards the underground or up and coming which is almost always good. Other than that, the University station is where its at, students get a voice, and it's heard.

  • Backspin!!!! I love backspin. Don't worry Brian hip hop died with the 9/11 attacks. I can't blame you for not liking today's stuff, it's trash. It's weird cause I don't think I've ever seen someone who listens to hip hop and the dance stuff other than me. Keep reppin it Dj B

  • @Ballsinger Most of the cool kids in my generation liked it all. In fact, the clubs use to play a mix of freestyle, alternative, house, energy, hip hop, R&B, etc, etc & everyone would just hang.

  • Australian Radio is pretty much the same. There's some good stations, very few, and they're all independent. Maybe I should look into some satellite.

  • The hits station in my market will play the same 5 or 6 songs almost every hour. I used to keep a running tally, and in the span of 6 hours one day they played a Justin Timberlake song damn near 10 times. And then it was Fergie all the time, then it was Gwen Stefani. Swear to God, they played the same song within 45 minutes on a daily basis. Radio sucks. Tru dat.

  • I used to work for the division of Clear Channel that supplied all their stations with the software & hardware to run the entire operation in any given market. They made it so a guy in, say Kansas City, could pre-record an entire 4 hour show in less than an hour then ship it electronically anywhere. So, one guy could be heard in several markets and it'd be the exact same show in every market. That leads to the complete homogenization of radio, which sucks the sould right out of it.

  • @RRollergod Radio stations sucks..if the listeners have no choice but to listen to the garbage that radio station plays then of course the listeners would want to hear garbage.Radio stations brain wash listeners to listen to crap,,I feel sorry for the younger generation that really could never hear what real good music sounds like. All they like is a song with 1kick,1snare,1 hihat, and maybe two musical notes.i havent listened to the radio in like 3 years .

  • Man I know your pain, I'm a a club DJ starting up in OK. I live in Moore and it's so hard finding gigs that are fitting for me. 90% of the time my gigs are nothing related to Club Djing. Just getting enough dough to buy the right gear is a pain. But, more to the point the radio is absolutely no help in finding good tunes.

  • on your point of radio 1, i do understand your point.. however i feel as Nihal, as the asian dj who throws in almost all music genres..

  • wrkr was in Racine. Hot 102 rest in piece. Club 102 at summer fest was amazing.

  • had no idea ue from OK,, i live in tulsa!

  • @djbizkets I'm not really from OK, I lived there for 3 1/2 years as a kid, though. Before that, I was in California and Indiana

  • radio does suck now a days....... i cant stand it ughh lol

  • Im 16 years old and I love radio. I listen to 95.7 in hartford CT. Its all top 40 and everything, but every night theres a mix show, in the studio and its awsome. On the weekend nights they play live from clubs and there are amazing mixes. I agree that some radio stations are shit! I got one that I sometimes listen to and it feels like a computer is running it in Cali.

    Good vid.

  • I love to hate clear channel and i work for them! ha i battle my PD every weekend!! NO LIE! im on the mixshow and i try to push GOOD music all the time Majority of the time I WIN! ha but when i lose, prepare for war! ha. i understand what it is and how it works. GREAT VIDEO! RADIO SUCKs! HA. BTW i think Clear Channel is based from San Antonio cause thats where my checks come from. I will never understand why they treat listeners like IDiots. 90% of these artist should be canned.

  • @BoiJeanius Hey you win because you're just that damn good Boi! Good for you and thanks for contributing to mixing it up a little in an otherwise bland medium :)

  • @briansredd They are from San Antonio.

  • I agree Brian, radio in Milwaukee sucks. I hate Kiss FM, they play the same stuff over and over and there's nothing unique about it. I might be washing dishes in the back while I work listening to the radio, and I hear the same songs at least 4 times within 6 hours. I usually listen to the radio on my way to school or a trip, but lately i've been playing my iPod or CDs that I have. The only time that I really want to listen to the radio is 10pm-12am for 88.9's Saturday Session when there's a DJ.

  • And on a side note, radio isn't radio anymore. It is seriously discerning when there isn't any value, core, or even talent for that matter. Everyone indeed has their opinionated taste in music, but the variety is officially gone and music is more corporate than ever.

  • I definitely agree that music is so stereotyped when it comes to homosexuality. I am a pure fan of House music and know of it's history. But I am not gay!!! Why couldn't just be called music instead of pertaining to homosexuals?!

That pisses me off for that genre of music is robbed all the time by RnB Artist and Hip Hop artists galore. Then they stereo type it as being gay music. Just call it music!!

I couldn't agree with you more good sir! God Bless!!

  • Intresting!

  • As far as radio is concerned, I only listen to oldie stations and contemporary jazz stations.

    ~DJ VinnyG~

  • i agree with you, radio is terrible, ever since i was born. im 15 years old and i just dread the radio now. i wish that they played what we actually wanted to hear

  • u suck

  • we suffer from the same entity controlling radio play rotation in Toronto. There are some good radio stations that can make their own programming, but those times are not peak or prime hours...it is sad, but it is reality. Radio wants to be able to sell advertising time slots like TV, there is nothing wrong with that. That is what builds health competition for market share. If we don't like what we are listening to on the radio, we can always change the station, pop in a cd or turn it off

  • Brian; Have a listen to some Dubstep ( I'm sure you have) if DnB is too fast.

But don't screw around with the Filth and Grime you'll no doubt hate it.

Try out some decent stuff by Nero, Caspa, Burial, RSK. etc.

I feel Dubstep is an evolution of music as opposed to having a load of 70's funk rehashed through a sequencer. But like any genre there's a lot of fools gold out there but with a bit of time and effort you will find a real gem.

  • So putting up a little vid response keep the chats up brian nice to have a chat some how anyway!

  • This is what im over, sometimes i did like to listen to the classic channel witch is gold fm, but what really gets me is the fact that the same shit gets played over and over, Brian you know im a big kiss fan, i gets me when this bad has over 30 albums and the radio station will only play 2 tracks of there's, and this goes with all bands they play. Im the same as you in a way IPOD, so i get what i want.

  • I just discovered Bimbo Jones a few months ago and was blown away :-) Honestly I don't listen to local radio unless my iPod resets itself (think it's due to some weird compatibility with my stereo receiver and jailbroken iTouch lol), have way too many podcasts to listen to.

Drum n Bass it hit and miss for me - I've discovered some with odd time signatures that I really like such as going from 11/8 to two sets of 3/8, anything in straight 4/4 time though is too monotonous for me

  • One of my favorite station was CD 101.9 Smooth jazz but then it became an alternative station in NY hot97 sucks ass 105.1 sucks ass but not as still sucks ass z100 sucks ass kiss 98.7 is okay but NY radio sucks ass

  • Listen to BBC Radio 2, a lot of the old Radio 1 DJs moved there (Radio 1 used to be great because of them). At night you get new obscure releases and the occasional old music programme which is a nice mix. Stuff that's on here in the day is some top 40 mixed with classics but I swear they play at least five songs I've never heard of every day.

There is some conglomerate shit here now (lots of "tin-pot locals" joined together to play ads and like three old songs over and over. Also Pete Tong rox.

  • good call! @MagikGimp

  • the only real radio i listen to is sirius xm. BPM is the best channel on sirius radio. then BBC Radio 1. On BPM one time, i heard a live dj, and he was real good! 20on20 isnt good at all. i dont listen to bbc that often. sometimes i flip through the stations and they play a good one.

  • I listen to dance on Radio 1, it is pretty good, also we pay for TV licence which pays for BBC and I think they get government funding too, but whether it is government controlled is debatable. (Overall) the BBC does things properly.

  • I have an HD receiver in my truck, and that's made radio a little better. The programming is a little better and there are no commercials. All free, and I can't complain.

  • you cant say radio sucks, my pirate broadcasting system is the best in toronto. only the finest rave tunes.

and trust me, when you need to risk your life to get your aerial up there you better have a good radio station.

  • Clear Channel?? They can kiss my ass.. I got hooked onto Satelite radio with lifetime subscription and love it..Yes Stern is the best...I can't go back listening to normal, censored radio. lol..Great vid Brian!

  • I'm 30 years old now and grew up in the southern MA area. Stations were crap out here, all top 40. Fortunately, I was able to discover college radio stations. In college I was lucky enough to become an on air DJ and spread the music that I loved. As time grew on even the music I loved changed. Music is an art form, it's a reflection of the times we live in. Record companies, play it safe and the music released today is just that, safe. It's very much by the numbers. I'm excited for what's next.

  • I saw the Title and though just another rant about shit commercial radio but omg BBC RADIO 1 WTF!!! I so agree I have been lucky enought to work with some of the guys that produce for the tracks on the dance shows kissy sell out ect... and live in Huddersfield where a lot of these guys work and live and I don't hate dn'b and dub step but you have got to be off your head on drugs to like a lot of rubbish where is the qualty house come on radio 1...

  • Radio here sucks. I'm all about Top 40 when I DJ but there's a difference between Top 40 and Rap. All we have over terrestrial here is like 5 rap stations, 2 top 40, 2 country (only 1 really "good" one though) a good rock station that went all talk and then back to all rock but now it's like 80's/90's. (Philadelphia Area Stations) Last time I turned to real free radio was when my XM wasn't working for a day or so before I could mount the antenna. Best XM - BPM/KISS21/The ViRuS-202/Octane

  • Clear Channel is the cause of the decline of modern civilization. They are the devil.

Funny thing is I always new that they were in Texas and I always thought that their rise had something to do with ties to George W (being that he's also from Texas) Since the act was signed in 1996, I guess maybe not.

  • In San Francisco/San Jose, CA Market they own Channel 92.3 (rock/alternative) Wild 94.9 (Urban Top 40) 98.1 Kiss FM (mostly old school R&B/Soul and some occasional Funk) 98.5 KFOX (classic Rock) Star101.3 (Hot Adult Contemporary [whatever the hell that means, mostly an odd mix of top 40) 103.7 The Band (classic rock) 104.9 (spanish) 106.1 KMEL (urban contemporary) 910 KNEW (AM Talk, they got all the radical Glenn Beck type stuff) 960 Green AM (more talk, never listened)
  • I am amazed at how many times I hear a song I hate on 101.3, change the channel to 94.9 only to hear the same song. 94.9 plays a song I like, then goes into something I don't to I switch over to 106.1 and then hear the same song that I liked a minute ago.

    ugh!

  • @FunkyRob You forgot 102.5. if Wild 94.9 works here in Yuba City. I'm pretty sure that will work out there haha.

  • @sainifabulous in the San Jose area 102.5 KDON can comes in with a bit of static at times. As you drive north towards San Francisco you start to pick up a Sacramento station. Oddly enough, I think both are Clear Channel stations with the same damn format.

  • @FunkyRob Nah, that was Bill Clinton and Michael Powel (Colen's little brother, then a big shot at the FCC) who put that on the books

  • One more thing, I am not keen on the idea of governmental radio at ALL! Ultimately, I think privatized stations are ideal, but we just need to find a way to make commercials and commercial obsolete. I know people who work at stations like KissFM and B96, and they don't want to play commercials and top40 music all the time, but they have to because they need to get paid. Someone needs to get out of that box and think of a new way to broadcast to the masses.

  • @RRollergod Michael, Michael, Michael... think about this for a moment. Let's say the USA had a few Public National Radio stations broadcasting on FM coast to coast (or local, dosen't matter). Pretend these stations were actually VERY good.

Now, pretend in Addition to these stations, we also had privatized commercial stations.

Wouldn't it stand to reason that the private commercial stations would HAVE to be at LEAST better than the Public stations? Wouldn't this improve radio overall?

  • @briansredd Why should a station try to be better than another? Sure competition is good, but if a station plays the music it's listeners want to hear and there is no complaints why change for the better if they already found their niche?

  • @RRollergod Think Checks & Balances. As fun as capitolism is, it can become abusive to the public. This is what I believe has happened to radio. So, if a STANDARD is set by someone who has no intirest in selling ad time and a big interest in serving what the public wants.... just think about it.

  • I also have noticed that XM/Sirius, while they say they don't play commercials, they do all the time!

  • XM/Sirius used to be better. Since the merger we have noticed a loss in quality, and now they play a lot of of the same song on multiple stations at the same time, and they are not good songs. Also, BPM has changed so much! Before they used to have a lot of mix shows with decent DJs whom played even better remixes. For me I personally can't stand Bimbo Jones, and Dave Aude. All their remixes seem the same to me. I have found that now I use Pandora on my phone more-so than anything else.

  • Hey Brian, check out Davey D's Breakdown FM online radio show for awesome indie hip-hop!

  • radio sucks in Ireland too. Maybe some internet radios are kind of good but not even as BBC1. just too much talking or old music. RTE Pulse its good but only on TV or online... In italy i loved some radio stations which are now just 100% commercial. now i just have fill my ipod every time (maybe that's why they are so popular) and i get bored very quickly of the same music. i used to own a 20gb mp3 player 4 years ago... i had it almost full just because to listen to different music every time :)

  • Brian,

Do you believe that the Top 40 radio of the 90s was better than the 00s? Do you believe that hip-hop and american idol have influenced pop music for the worst?

  • @LaLaGrunge Every once in a great while, I enjoyed certian stations in the 90s, especially if I was traveling. Madison WI had a great independent top 40 station at 104.5 and Chicago's B-96 was candy to my ears! As I said in the vid, coming into the 90s we had a great station that was everything from New Jack to Energy to Freestyle. Not much on radio in the 00's. Thankfully I discovered British Top 40 which got me thru the decade.

  • @LaLaGrunge I'd say American Idol and Modern Hip Hop have something in common: They are both cheap and easy to produce and the American public is dumb enough to buy both of them without question.

  • Part two as I ran out of room!

I don't listen to radio now at all, as there's so much music easily available because of the internet and MP3 - like fast food - you want it, you got it.

Also because of that, I like to listen to MY choice, not have to sit through other songs, commercials, news, DJ chatter, to get to the good stuff.

  • Like you Brian, as a kid I always listened to the radio. Initially it was Radio One which was originally AM only. Buying music wasn't really an option unless you saved up your pocket money.

One of the coolest things was discovering Radio Luxembourg, which was always a weak signal, drifting in and out, but Tony Prince playing the first ever mashups/megamixes by Alan Coulthard was amazing.

He got such a good response that he founded DMC and made those mixes available to DJs (on cassette tape!).

  • Hey Brian,

I was wondering since you are the mobile dj tutor on Dj tutor, If you could do one of these videos on djing corporate events. I have had some success and some bombs but yeah I'd like to hear your opinion on them since they are way different then a Club gig or a wedding!

    Thanks,

    Andrew

  • I live in Stockholm and over here we only got 1 Dance music station, that's right 1! And the sad part is that most of the stuff they play on there is basically Pop! Like seriously! I want to hear some new Dance music, not stuff that i allready heard like a billion times!

Oh,and Dance music is not gay, modern rock is! xD

  • It's kinda wierd! House music sorta does have become mainstream, not really much but a little with guys like David Guetta,Swedish House Mafia and Deadmau5 to name a few! Now you would imagine that they would play that stuff on the radio....but they don't! Instead,we get crap like Lady Gaga and some lame Emo bands...like seriously!

  • Radio Blows. Central Wisconsin is no better Brian. I have had XM since 2002, and that pretty much made my FM radio obsolete.

  • i agree 100% radio is rubbish now 2 much talking and not enough music but have found a good radio station choice fm its worth a look on the internet another great vid brian :-) gary

  • Hey Brian, I'm the music director for a "Hip Hop and R&B" station. I'm 26 and when I first really got into radio (as a listener) I was about 9 or 10...I knew "that is what I want to do when I grow up" I am lucky enough to continue my dream (11 years total on the air) The days of the jock controlling the music in their show is OVER. Its really sad to have play a really crappy record and have to say its the hottest thing out there. My heart is with mobile djing, but my radio gig pays the mortgage

  • I just tuned in to radio BPM and it's THE best radio station i ever heard. Thanks for the mention Brian.

  • @vuksa1234321 Hey glad you like it! Can you imagine getting this kind of radio over the free airwaves?

  • @briansredd That would be awesome. These days when i tune in to some of the national stations in my country they are either playing Lady Gaga or some other popular stuff that sucks and the local stations are either playing some garbage or talk shows about politics :S

  • clearchannel has the worst music. They do have great morning shows except elvis duran in the morning. Internet radio is far better

  • BBC RADIO 1

  • I'll send you a facebook suggestion to a local radio station here in Houston that went under....I started a page called "Brink Back Rock101 KLOL" it has about 4300 fans in less than a year......the big controversy is that it went from ROCK TO SPANISH, but when the brown folks are complaining too...you know its bad....to top it off the current MEGA 101 station only has about 1400 facebook fans !!!

  • @mike71flores Oh Hell, Latinos complaining about a rock station going Latin? Yeah that's got to be very bad

  • @briansredd You don't like drum & bass but what about dubstep?

  • Hi bri, if you think this is bad just wait a few years, its gona be worse trust me.

Here in sweden both tv and radio sux donkeyballs, its all about commercials.

i just got pissed and chucked away the nubetube, no freaking way im going to watch or listen to that shit.

To make stuff even worse, we have to pay a license to both own a tv and to listen to radio, so its really up to us all, so use the internet and broadcast radio and webshows, and kick the radiocompanies in the ass.

  • i remember my 1st cd that i buy it was dj irene, richard humpty vission, dj enrie and bad boy bill iremember my parents didnt like that kuz it sounded weird or they were forcrazy people im like mmm is one of my best cds i never had a chance to meet dj irene she allways come but never go lol now im 26 i still listen to old school music from the 90s 80s

  • Down with Clear Channel Radio.......time to bring back PIRATE RADIO!!!!!!!

  • Radio needs more on air talent and less mainstream music. I have both SIRIUS and XM, Tried Slacker Radio with G2 player for a while and i like Last FM better even tho its owned by CBS but so is YouTube? it seems like they have a solid OS and its FREE and you can get it on multiple devices like your PC,Xbox,Cell Phone,Ext...;-)

  • I hate Clear Channel, they're trying to be the foundation of what's good, and what's not. I'm lucky to work for a Medium Size "NON-CORPORATE" radio company. I could totally blast you for these comments, because you know I am a Program Manager for my radio station & we program LOCALLY. But, I'm not quite that kinda person. I look at it this way, these are your opinions as always. There are many radio stations that suck, but there are still many good ones out there, and it's still FREE.

  • @djboentertainment But we do have a national radio consultant that will help us when needed, mainly for branding. But we program our music to the people that live around here. I'm sure Stacey Noles and I could talk for hours on these topic. But, I've got to go program the music for my radio station right now. lol

    ~DJ Bo~

  • @djboentertainment Hey locally owned and operated .. and PROGRAMED gets a big thumbs up from me!

You were here, did you turn on the dial and hear anything worth listening to?

  • @briansredd I listened to a bunch of radio stations while I was at LIVE, and Milwaukee didn't really have any good stations. But Chicago had maybe 1 that I liked. But I listen to a lot of other stations for ideas, and to see what they do different from mine. So I'm not a good person to ask that question to. HA!

  • Internet radios a good idea impo, or just CD's lol

  • I totally understand what you're saying about "gay" music. One of my favorite dance tracks is considered gay; "Hold That Sucker Down (Builds Like a Skyscraper Mix)" by O.T. Quartet. I dont know what it is about that track that gets me going, but I caught alot heat from my friends but oh well. anyways, wedding season is around the corner and i cant wait to see those gig logs.

  • Here in Utah, they have some good public AM radio stations. They play stuff i have NEVER heard anywhere else. Not really all dance music but sometimes. Also we have a FM station that plays a loop of top 40s pretty much. but then every night the DJ gets on and makes a mix of the songs. (or they say he does) Sometimes it's good sometimes it crappy but it gives me ideas of what new songs sound good together and what doesn't .

  • I have to make a mention for KEXP in Seattle. Listener supported radio. Of course, it's out of market for me, so I listen to it online. And luckily they provide a rich online experience on top of their radio feed.

  • @katsimbris We've got Radio Milwaukee which is listener supported. My guy Rock Dee was the morning show guy there until he died about 2 years ago. I haven't listened for a while because it tends to get a bit too obscure rare groove for me, but it's not bad

  • @briansredd I totally understand the challenge with how things are obscure. I guess I have never been able to take what I get from there and bring it on to mass amount of people. I can't help but wonder though that maybe some more of that music would get popular if it were played on our top 40 stations. You'd never believe how surprised I was when I heard the Ting Tings played on a local station of mine. I was floored. I still can't believe it.

  • @katsimbris Oh yeah, I hear ya. I remember Radio Milwaukee was playing American Boy by Estelle WAY before it hit & I was also blown away to hear it on a Clear Channel station.

The obscure stuff I'm talking about is more stuff from the 60s and 70s. Seems the DJs there are all in thier 50s and jam what they dig a lot.

  • Hey cool stuff, agree on that, actually i listen to radio every morning, it is my alarm clock ! I live in France but go quite often to the states in Clarksville TN, and there they have a student radio that is called the vanderbilt radio and it is really awesome, it's only students who are on air, so their programme is very diverse and really cool, on friday and sat if i think they have some house programing and it is really nice ! Great vid' loved it !!!!

  • @charlis1987 Totally agree. College radio stations are the only good stations left. Nowadays I only listen to the radio if I'm forced to because my ipod is dead or something. I haven't listened in like 5+ years probably?

  • One station I do miss is WEDK Energy 92.7& 5 out of Chicago. That was an awesome station back 7-9 years ago. Also I miss Power 88.5 out of Newmarket, Ontario. That was an awesome station and had live 2 airs every night of the week. I can't say music about my local radio, for the most part it sucks ass. Automation is common here. When I was a kid, AM was the way to go and it was great to pick up all of these out of market stations from Ontario to eastern Newfoundland at night,

  • @traxonwax Then in the mid 80's FM really started to get popular and over the past 20 years or so, just about every AM music station flipped to FM and what was left was all automated. YUCK!

As for ownership rules in Canada. If there are 8 or more commercial stations in any of the 2 official languages (english or french), then you're allowed to own 2AMs and 2FMs, if not then it's a max of 3 but all 3 can't be on the FM band.

  • You have already talked about this partly in your video about Payola, anyhow times change, we have to adapt to the times we are in, nostalgia is fine in measure, we need to give new music a chance, as bad as it may be.

  • @oliverwright19 I agree, we DO need to give new music a chance. First, we need to HEAR it. We can't hear it if it's not being played. This is a big part of the problem with the current state of things.

  • @briansredd I agree that we need to get new music out there as well but why does it have always to be this CRAP that is being played from KIIS 102.7s and Z100's of the world?

You know when I was a kid, our parents would just hate what we were into for the most part cuz it was too loud or whatever, but I think that we are the first generation who dislike the younger generations music for the simple fact that it's just plain boring!!!

  • @traxonwax Hey I couldn't have said it better. BORING! I'm so glad I was able to travel in my 30s abroad. When I'm in places like the UK, Europe or Australia I always hear something new I just love. The USA just falls short broadcast wise.

The STRANGE thing is some of this music I hear aborad that I like, come to find out, are USA artists that can't get exposure here. Ain't that a bitch?

  • @oliverwright19 Hey, you are in Europe... you are in better shape over there than we are. This is probably more of a USA problem

  • hi brian. i'm also a big fan of Deadmau5. the stuff he makes and remixes is just awesome. about the BBC radio1. you might want to check out their schedule. friday and saturday nights are dance. Sunday is uk top 40. and through the week has various rock/indie artists. but i'm not sure you'd catch any of that due to the timezones.

  • @dadge35 Deadmau5 was here for a few shows last week and from what my friends said, just ripped it up. As for the time issue with Radio 1, Sirius will timeshift the program to Eastern time. (-5:00 UTC)

  • Alright Stern HEY NOW!

    Isaac

  • Good points Brian, I agree radio does suck, I mostly listen to radio on the Net now a days since they have much more targeted content, I guess sort of like Sirius/XM.

  • Where is oklahoma!? I live in del city!

  • @GuttedAtBirth I was in Ponca City
