@rustycooledge Oh man I totally agree. That intro with David's hipster at the doughnut shop with Bob's "droopy" is one of the best bumpers ever. That's what I was actually looking for right now.
Electric tie rack, it's so nice, moves ties from side to side! Electric tie rack, baby loves it, rackin' up electric ties! Tankyu! It's always fun to refer back to this sketch with other people who've seen it, especially the counterfeit money machine song or just singing in an old-timey voice. <3
Can't think about sports bras without that gingle in my head ! of course, I usually think about tits more than bras, oh well ! with Ohbummer in the white house, I usually think about the Mulattosaurus, the monster made up of all races with a pinch or sand crab from the episode with "Byron De La Beckwith, Racist in the year 3000. Ya can't trust a man whut's made of GAS !!!
This has been my favorite Mr. Show sketch since I first saw it on HBO when it was new. I've seen it many times on the dvd's and on this youtube clip, but only just now I notices that they are singing about the vacuum cleaner and carpet sweeper they're using at the end. It's nice that this sketch is so genius there's still new stuff to find after all these years.
There's little audience reaction because the skit isn't laugh out loud funny.
It truly is one of their best skits. While I do not laugh out loud, I do appreciate it's humor, and smile watching it. The skit ends on a note as sad as the passing of time.
Damn, that little tune could get stuck in your head. I'm fucking singing everything I'm doing now. "Gettin' a drink, don'tcha know I'm gettin' a drink.." Ugh.
So much awesomeness in this sketch I"m not even gonna bother to write it all.
clearly, you all agree & see the genius, too. Fucking brilliant.
This was based on an Al Jolson bio where they would talk about how he had a beautiful voice and when they would show Al singing he sounded just like Dickie and The Kid.
To the person downthread who wondered why they used megaphones in this sketch:
Microphones as we know them today weren't good enough to use widely until the mid-1920s.
Before then, performers' voices had to carry, and there were times when some pop singers really did have to use megaphones on stage in a big music hall.
This is going to sound WAY lame...but Tom Kenny completely sells this one...and towards the end lends a certain meloncholy to it that is just awesome....
Dickie and Kid Jersey headlining the "Monsters of Megaphone Tour" of 1929?? If I could go back there in the Time Machine Dickie sang about, I would pay scalper prices to see that! I dug Mr. Show so much. David Cross rules and I've always thought Bob Odenkirk should be a bigger name than he is.......Best Week Ever's host Paul F. Tomkins also did good work on Mr. Show. Good times......
They have a deleted scene on the DVD where Tom Kenny is talking about Dickie eating "what we used to call" pussy through the megaphone with his "forked" tongue. It's hilarious and I don't know why they didn't include it.
Good god... this sketch is just too funny. The performances on this sketch are outstanding, from Tom's character, to Bob/David's young and old versions, even John Ennis as the patent guy... everything about this sketch is just pure brilliance.
The idea of them having to invent new things so they can sing about it immediately is one of the most brilliant ideas ever. Such an awesome fucking sketch.
Any chance you could get Car Wash Change Thief Action Squad up here?
yeah it's one of their best skits. i too busted a gut the first time i saw it, and it still cracks me up. glad it's on youtube so i can just give someone the link, instead of lamely trying to explain the bit to them.
I listened to some of the commentary on the DVD for this, and they said they based it on some old PBS show were old folks kept saying how wonderful these old singers were, but in reality they thought they were awful. I think Tom Kenny may have come up with it.
This is my favorite Mr. Show skit. In the commentary for this episode on DVD, Bob Odenkirk said he got the idea from watching a documentary on TV about Al Jolson. He said that the people being interviewed who had worked with Jolson thought he was talented, but they hated him. "I was his assistant for 30 years. He was a cruel man. He was cruel to me, but boy could he dance. Then they cut to Jolson, dancing like shit."
I remember him from even before this when he was the host for Friday Night Videos in the early 90's. Plus he was also Binky The Clown in one of the greatest alcoholic clown movies ever! That was also before Mr. Show.
This is one of my favorite Mr. Show skits. What's even funnier is the commentary track on the DVD where Bob Odenkirk talks about how he came up with this skit by watching a documentary on Al Jolson, where those who worked with him said how cruel he was, but boy could he dance!
One thing I just noticed recently, and you can see it at :40, is how the Dickie Crickets name on the marquee looks superimposed and fake, lol. Awesome segment - when Jay jumps in to apprehend Kid Jersey on Counterfeit Money Machine, I lose my shit.
It's so hard to post clips like these because they have no definite start and end. The clip before this is funny as well, but I can't upload the whole episode. lol. "Did you watch Sanford & Son last night?"
