  • Still my favorite singer -- classic song - Hadn't heard this version - Thank you

  • Sandy Denny was one of the finest singers, what a tragedy that she died so young.

Listen to her singing Reynardine if you have not yet done so, or listen again. And again.

  • A lovely track and thanks for the upload. You might want to set up your tonearm though, as it sounds like the cartridge is mis-tracking somewhat. Not a criticism but it would be a shame to ruin your records as you play them.

  • Have very recently discovered Sandy, did not realise how empty my soul was until now. Sandy, thank you sweet Angel, sleep well,Neil.

  • Truly wonderful and memorable version. Her unequalled voice is a delight.

  • I absolutely love Sandy but her late solo albums are not my favorites. This however is so beautiful and I can't thank you enough for introducing me to it.

The videos editing is also lovely and the as for "not so optimal" sound quality, it's just makes it better.

I've first discovered this song here about a year ago and it became one of my favorite Sandy Denny tracks.

    Many thank.

  • What a great song to listen to on a rainy day like today.

  • search nicolas and the iceni summer's end. they write beautiful folk music which has echoes of denny

  • sandy denny is underestimated

    but not entirely forgotten

  • Lovely!

  • What a great song-beautiful lyrics and the images are beautiful.

  • I love crackling of the vinyl! My dad gave me a pickup 3 weeks ago, and I haven't been listening to anything else since then!

  • maybe its just me, but the "poor quality" or the crackle of the vinyl ads to the music.

  • Those Swans look like they're 18 feet tall !

  • Sweet rendition. There's a rousing version of this song performed by The Strawbs (the band that originally discovered Sandy Denny)...comment form is choking on the URL, so you have to search Youtube for Strawbs Will You Go.

  • the corries version sounds better but I like the pictures and comments for this video better mmm...can't decide...

  • JOAN BAEZ

  • Good lord... Sandy just tuned my heart strings and plucked them like I never thought possible! Completely makes me feel like I should move to Ireland... one day

  • @knivesandpeppers

    or maybe scotland......

  • Comment removed

  • It's not a folk song - it was written by William McPeake, father of Francis (honour be to him). jimdivax here suggests it's not quite original, being a variant of another composed song. Neither are criticism of song or singer, you quick-tempered lot.

  • I love this recording, love this song.

  • Not that I don't like this version, but there is another of her doing this song and it was on You Tube maybe a year ago. The accompaniment seemed to me to be more compatible with the song--less confined to the treble range, I think. More fitting for the guitar. I was hoping to find it again..

  • Beutiful, love it. First I heard it was a group standing round a bed singing to a dying man. It touched me, and still does.

  • Good to be reminded of just WHY I dislike vinyl so much! (no complaint; haven't heard this version elsewhere, glad to)

  • Sandy Denny was wonderful ! R.I.P. x

  • What else to say? Loved her to bits.

  • thanks for helping me rediscover this wonderful tune. i sing it to my daughter every night now...

  • I love sandy denny......such a bueatiful singer........never heard her version of this song............thanks DJ

  • 19 CD Sandy Denny box set was released on Nov.1st. Go geddit pop-pickers.

  • @teliesin77 got it .....amazing,the unreleased stuff is phenominal!!

  • @teliesin77 got it .....amazing,the unreleased stuff is phenomenal!!

  • @teliesin77 Would love to but as it cost around 200E, this struggling student will have to settle with her cds and youtube rarities :)

  • wow incredible thank you

  • wow incredible thank you

  • Oh this has just brought tears to my eyes,....thankyou so much,Sandy is still my favourite female singer....she always will be.Some of these photographs remind me so of where my family live on Exmoor....heather strewn moorland. At 1.01 is that fairy print Arthur Rackham or Lucy Mabel Atwell??...I love fairies+pixies....I am a pixie really y'know....lol..thanks Sophie x

  • Great

  • snap crackle pop. Thats vinyl. Beautiful song though

  • The first time I heard her voice, every hair stood on it's end. I found her and my soul nearly weeps every time I hear her. When I pass to the hereafter, I want to hear her voice greeting me, guiding me home....

  • nice to hear the pops and scratches from an old record...

  • Great slideshow - the essence of serenity like the song. Thanks for posting.

RIP Sandy, we love you still, though life was not always kind to you.

  • tks for this one of my very favs

  • beautiful song, beautiful voice, bass player ???? ha ha, its awful bass and screws this song up, sorry,no offence

  • @MrTOMOKELLY thanks for pointing that out, lol.. now I cant stop myself from hearing it. THANKS! :P

  • Plus qu'une chanson, c'est un véritable hymne, ça résonne dans mon coeur... Sandy Denny a une des plus belles voix que j'ai jamais entendu. Parfaite pour interpréter "Wild Mountain Thyme".

  • The track was recorded in the seventies so the sound quality is PERFECT, WARM, and AMAZING, much better than today´s sound engineering.

  • Soopoib!

  • Beautiful song, The sound quality in the 70s was much better, cose it was analog, You should pay real a lot of money to buy this equipment from 60s, 70s

  • Her voice is like golddust. Beautiful video too

  • How beautiful!

  • Makes my eyes misty, too.

  • How have I missed this beaut from Sandy?

Brought tears to my eyes, one of my Dad's all time favourite songs - so many happy memories.

  • I think the mighty Motorhead would do a fine version of this song. A Richenbacker bass blasting thru a couple of Mashall stacks is what this song lacks! Oh, and some profanity! The odd swear word here and there would not go a miss.

  • what an idea!

  • @Punorss Ewwh.. oh my god.. you made me throw up. That's a terrible idea.

  • @Tengent Each to their own. If we all liked the same things what a boring old world it would be!

  • @Punorss But it is a boring old world.

  • @John27346 Not when you are 3 rows back at a Motorhead concert thinking your head is going to implode with the volume.

  • @Punorss Meh. :-|

  • She's on "Led Zepp 4" the only non-band member to appear on a Zepplin album....enjoy!

  • what song?

  • The Battle of Evermore

  • What song?

  • Why is it people have to argue who wrote it, who made it, its a loverly song let be we all know its English for a start!!

  • Stunning and haunting. Love you Sandy!

  • Sandy Denny deepens the pathos of this song by little changes ..she sings " if my true love will not come / i will surely find no other ( instead of another)

  • I have heard the phrase "find no other" is actually the correct phrase. For some reason most versions misstate this phrase.

  • Wow straight off the vinyl. Absolutely stunning ...

    Thank you !

    Don Barone

  • its an irish song!! you muppet although your scottish so your alright!!! :)

  • Though the recent lyric variant were written in the 50s by a Belfast writer, the actual song is a version of a Scottish song written by Robert Tannahill round about 1800 called THE BRAES O BALQUHIDDER

  • @limericksatbcity It is Scots!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • written by Willim McPeake from Belfast

  • @thebresker you're right: thebards.net/music/lyrics/Wild_Mountain_Thyme.shtml says: Wild Mountain Thyme was written by William Mc peak and finished by his son Francis, The song is not a scottish song it's an Irish song. William Mc Peak was from Belfast and as the ulster scotch dialect is so close to scottish its a common mistake to think the song is scottish. It most certainly is not.

  • @54SV scotch is a drink

  • Check out the Corries version of this Scottish song.

  • Danke für das Knistern !

Kenne den Song nicht, obwohl ich mich bemühe viel von Sanndy zu sammeln !

Danke ! Höre das Lied schon zum fünften Mal !!

  • love the album pops! brings back fond memories

  • Does anyone know if there was ever any direct contact between Sandy Denny and Nick Drake. He certainly had some contact with FC but not sure if there was any connection with Sandy

    Richard

  • Nick toured (briefly) with Sandy's band Fotheringay in 1970. In his autobiography Joe Boyd says that "Sandy and Nick regarded each other with respect but from a distance. Sandy couldn't relate to Nick, and Nick was as reticent towards her as he was towards most people".

  • Yeah...too bad he let his enormous pride get in the way of his immense talent..one thing Sandy, and so many other great artists, never did...RIP, Sister

  • Checkout the Byrds version they did it before Sandy God bless her

  • I adore this song and never tire of finding different covers of it...I first heard it by Joan Baez..and I've heard it by Judy Collins and the Dust Rhinos. the Corries and the Tannahill Weavers...to name a few..I always thought it was by a Scot..but it was a guy from Belfast that wrote it apparently...love to hear Sandy Denny sing it tho....

  • It wasn't. The poem was written by Robert Tannahill who was from Paisley in Scotland. The confusion arises when Francis McPeake from Ulster sung it. Although the song is most definitely Scottish. Hope this helps

  • This is a beautiful version. I thought I had everything by this amazing woman.more and more people are begining to listen, listen. only a matter of time before hey make movie. Must say Im disgusted with the BBC for dropping sandy from the recent British ladies documentay series. We should petition he Beeb to broadcast it.

  • I could not agree more, Sandy is the best of English lady singers by far. Such tone and such power. The beeb should be ashamed of themselves.

  • I heard her sing this song with Fotheringay on a radio station recently and it was much better with the harmony of the other voices; Especially in the refrain. It would be great if someone could post that on youtube.

  • r.i.p sandy sadly missed .tom

  • Great version of this classic song, and a charming video, Peter thanks for sending.....

  • Call me what you want - just don't call me in the morning. Me, I like those late people. Scary video, beautiful song

  • The incomparable Alexandra Elene MacLaine Denny singing one of my favourite songs , doesn't get much better for me ,many thanks

  • is this from the new Fotheringay 2 record?

  • I didnt know there was a new Fotheringay album out. Whats on it? I bought the first album in 1971

  • No it's from 'one'.

Peter it's mainly different versions of 'one' - worth tracking down.

    Greetz from LS7

  • such a lovely lady, rumours abound about her death, i wish I knew...lovely art with this vid..Steve

  • She amazes me.

    Again.

  • A great song, thank you Karen for the share :-)

    Mark...

  • So lovely -- you did justice to this beautiful song and performance with your beautiful visuals. Thank you for sharing. Just gorgeous, really.

    Karen

  • Beautiful song and beautifully done video ~ many thanks!

  • Just beautiful thank you for this. Sandy lives on

  • I love this version but also see Joan baez for a great version too

  • Thanks for all the comments friends :)

  • @QueenofMann oh how lovely to hear the crackle and pop of a real record...

  • @vonsterflick brings back memories-still listened and enjoyed so much...

  • sorry I didnt mean anything bad!

I meant I was surprised that this song wasnt well known. Sandy isnt well know in the USA, and I meant she should be better known.

  • No worries.

I think she's known among US folkies but certainly not by the wider public.

She was on the verge of a major deal with A&M (?) records in the US, big things were planned, but it coincided with her steep decline / fear of flying etc and it all came to nothing.

Just another 'what if?' in the Sandy story

  • Beautiful.

  • A better version (apparently) will be on the 'Fotheringay2' album which will be released on 29/09/08.

Even 30 years after her death Sandy is still making waves :)

  • The version on Fotheringay 2 is arranged with full band. I prefer this version , where you can hear her sumptous vocal better, Hopefully there'll be a 'Fotheringay At The Beeb' album eventually and this'll get a proper release.

  • It's on 'Sandy at the BBC', this mix is from 'Wild Mountain Thyme', a bootleg Fotheringay album.

  • Where did this particular track come from, I thought I had all of Sandy Denny's stuff but I have not got this one.

  • Awesome job Queen. . beautiful

  • Beautiful song from a beautiful singer, thankyou for sharing.

  • Where did you find this?

  • I downloaded the music and created a slide show.

  • a beautiful singing voice that brings a lump to my throat.

  • What a lovely version of this old song, sung in Sandy's own inimitable way... she almost makes it her own. So sad that she passed away so young. RIP.

  • Wow, I'm a zeppelin fan, and learned about her through the battle of evermore, and now I'm discovering all sorts of things about her. she's amazing. her voice is beautiful.

  • Welcome also - there's tons of Sandy's stuff to discover, it's all worth searching for

  • Welcome!!!!

  • Thanks for this

  • Sandy has always been my favorite singer since I heard her in 1968. This is my favorite version of this song and one of her best. Only surpased by "Banks of the Nile"..what a masterpiece. Joe Boyd said in an interview that Sandy did Banks of the Nile in one take!! Amazing.

  • You can check "Banks of the Nile" on my page. I posted it in stereo. It's pity that this vinyl record is not in top mint condition. I love the song

  • I'll take Sandy in any way I can get her, and this is beautiful.

  • Another treasure

  • great, wonderful song - sung in an astonishing way, away from the common interpretations (at least known to me). This remembers me to my journey around scotland years ago. You made a nice video-clip as well !

Thank you a lot for this ! I'm playing this on accordion, but far away from the emotion of this sung version... guessing, i have to go deeper into detail with the many different versions, that do exist on this folksong.

  • There is a wealth of charm and beauty in old folk songs. There are many versions to this song, Black is the Colour (another one of my favorites) and Star of the County Down, etc, etc.

Weep No More You Sad Fountains is another beautiful song, as well as Greensleeves.

    Enjoy your travels!

  • Thank you very much for your opinion and hints.

    I covered already "Greensleeves".

"Star of the Country Down" will be one of my folk-projects in future as well.

I love people giving me new ideas and suggestions - you are one of them !

  • Oh, I see you are a musician! I hope my suggestions work out well for you. Cheers.

  • Yes, your suggestions were very helpful and brought me back on the "folk-way" of music. Folk and classics are the base of many (so called) "modern" songs. There is rich value in celtic music. I love it and will stay with it - will even go deeper inside of that genre.

Thank you again for your ideas and best regards from germany.

  • The Battle of Evermore is one of my favorite songs by the Zep, (being the true Tolkien fan that I am).

Robert Plant was (is) really into Celtic and Nordic mythology and legend.

Page was the wicked witch...an avid student of Crowley's work. An interesting character to say the least.

    Pax Vobiscum

  • Robert Plant & Alison Krauss sang a tribute to sandy at the Apollo Manchester the other nigth, plant spoke of how much he missed her and it,s was 30th anniversary. they sang battle for ever more. there was,nt a dry eye! Never forgotten. AND ALWAYS LOVED /|\

  • Sorry! The battle AT evermore!

  • That's beautiful... I can tear up about Sandy easily.. I'm glad they acknowledged her.

  • One of my most favourite folk songs sung beautifully by an angel.

  • Beautiful!

    Cx

  • Thanks for viewing the video and commenting.

  • Is this song on any of sandys albums? beautiful song, love it!

  • The tracks Here in Silence and Man of Iron are on the album No more sad refrains (2 CDs), and were recorded for the 1972 film Pass of Arms.

  • Oh you're so lucky. At least I know where to find it now. I'm on a quest for "Sandy"! Thanks for the information and for visiting my page.

  • Does anyone have Here in Silence? I absolutely love that song by Sandy Denny.

  • Yes, I just bought the CD copy of "Sandy" and "Here in Silence" is one of the bonus tracks on the album.

  • Beautiful!

  • Thank you kindly for taking the time to view the video and leave a comment.
