  • that brilliant synth mixed with jons passion for old images........... brill!

  • Guys, I was 6 years old when this was released and this song always brings back magic memories. And yep, they rarely make songs like this anymore. Such a pity.

  • My god!!! I work with two male 20 year old's and they listen to music that should be best left for gay night clubs! What is happening??? Well I'm fighting back as I'm raising my twin eleven year old girls on old school rock which includes a heavy dose of Prog. and then not to mention my 8 month old boy who loves Yes and Porcupine Tree.

  • HOLYSHIITTTT ORIGINALVIDEO!! I FOUND IT! IM ONLY 22 BUT I LOVE THIS SONG!

Thanks a lot, AMAZING song, and very nice video!

  • Awesome song, i was 15 at the time, brings back great memories. Great album.

  • this was one ov me dads songs ,its reminds me ov him rip dad xx

  • Wow! I was listening to "Asia" and read that some of the group are from "Yes". So I wondered what the singers name was. I find out, and type Jon's name in. When I see this song, I'm thinking, that's famiiar. OMG. I haven't heard this for years. Somewhere, I have this on a tape when I recorded them on a crappy Radio Shack cassette recorder and mom or dad would walk in half way through. I'll have to go through my dusty tapes and LP's and crank some real music. Thanks for posting.

  • @dj6927 The lead singer for Asia was John Wetton (also played Bass) The members of Yes in Asia were Steve Howe on guitar and Geoff Downs on keyboards.

  • super!!!!!!

  • thanks for the music uploads - I love your taste

  • To the best of my knowledge, the first rap song was Malcolm McClaren's Buffalo Girls. Could be wrong, but that's as early as I can trace it

  • Jon and Vangelis is a match made in heaven. I love their collaborations. I wish they would launch a tour together. But I don't think Vangelis performs very often in public.

  • music should touch your soul, like vangelis...present music is totally crap

  • Who ever you are that posted this... Thank You!!!. I have hummed the riff of this for damn near 30 years. Could not remember the title for the life of me until just the other day. This was out in the day when you had to listen the the radio to hear a song if you liked it. Too instant today, nothing EVER stands out...

  • Jon Anderson is the best ever!

No Jon? Then no YES !!!!!!!!

    Thumbs up if you agree!

  • you are all so right. this is cool stuff!

  • I always get chills when Jon sings "between the eyes..." - love this song so dang much! The full version seriously is better though. :P

  • i think it's the kinda high notes or something that made me at first feel a little off.....

  • this song definitely brings back memories.

  • This is one of those great songs that got me into the whole yes thing and so on when I was growing up during the early 80s.There was other very moving songs on that album that which has inspired me to sing them all until I knew of all of the lyrics off by heart. Very amazing indeed.

  • love this song of the friends of Mr. Cairo by Jon Anderson and the Vangelis.

  • great but is not full version

  • 7+++ ;))

  • Needs subtitles.

  • I LOVE this song and it is so hard to find it anywhere. Thanks for the post!!!

  • This song remember me when i was a child and i still remember telling to my dad to put this on the car

  • @stratocaster137 I agree great driving music

  • I love this song, the original is 14 min long..

  • [movie like speech:]

Woman: Hey, there's a really terrific dress shop. Can we stop this raid while I buy a new gown?

Frankie: I'll buy you the whole factory, sweetheart. Don't worry.

  • we are awakening, to understand no aspect of our lives today has the same level of creativity, as it did , not just the music, but the food, the equipment we are sold, even the politics is all the same old drone, labour, conservative, liberal, democrate, rebublican....they are all the same, Jon Anderson like John lennon, today would not be wanted in the music industry....unless they droned out the same repetative rubbish the corporates told them to produce

  • The Friends of Mr. Cairo was one of the earliest cds I recall buying. I loved the title song and it made me recall those wonderful days at the local cinema---a rundown last run theater but the magic was not diminished. I spent a great portion of my youth in the seventies watching all types of movies. The song's nostalgia stings me in nice but sad way.

  • YAAAY I FOUND IT. I have been looking for this song for a while.

Around Halloween in the mid 1980s the only radio station worth listening to played this song ad nauseum. I used to think there was no other music choices. I think they played it a million times on Halloween

  • @garycalgary I feel the same way!!! YAAY I FOUND IT!!!!

  • This is definitely an awesome piece of music....just wish the sound quality was better.

  • I remember a station in Atlanta that played whole albums on Sat. nights and I taped this album off the radio!

  • I'm speachless!!!!!

  • My fauvorite CD

  • Love this track, it's so different from anyhting else in the charts at the time. Nice touch with the Vocoder as well.

  • Jon and Vangelis,,, the best progresive rock for that era.. love it.

  • I wish they had the whole song.

  • One of my teenage favourites and I thought I won't ever hear it again!

    I'm grateful for this! :)

  • ive been looking for this for ages, knocks me out.

  • kill this bill we the peolple will vote you out of this

  • for the benefit of mr kite

  • Wow only 4 min ? You guys are missing out on the full version, mines 12:11.

    "Early thirties gangster movies

    Set to spellbind population"

Dunno why this is my favorite part to listen to, the song is just very cool.

  • @XurchVeteran Soul and light can always see / The meeting of true love and she / This silent night and I, / I guess a lonely mind might see

They are so missing the best part of the song. It always used to drive me nuts when they'[d play the short version on the radio. I was always waiting for that much neglected second half.

  • "Brazil" maxi-synth-steroided.

  • Chryzippus, you should have put on a 'Long ' playing album.. lol jk

  • Ha! Back in the day, I bought four or five Yes albums looking for this song, only to find that it was Jon, and Vangelis. I finally found it, and still have the vinyl.

    TIR

  • lol this song seems to be bringing back a lot of memories (=

  • lol where do you people find these old vids...(=

  • The entire album is magnificent!

  • @anarchistnow:

    my thoughts exactly! :-)

  • @anarchistnow state of independence is the tune for the ages.i rtae this LP AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

  • punais i love his voice ! i love this song for years ago !!

  • this is decent!

  • I lost my virginity on Dec 28th,1981 while listening to this song on a 45 RPM single.

This song is one of the best songs ever recorded.

    :)

  • I did too! It was on the 30th of Dec in my 1975 Mustang! Her name was Gina. And she rocked!

  • @chryzippus It's certainly the best thing Vangelis ever did and it is almost the best thing Jon Anderson ever did. He has got the finest voice in the entire history of vocal recordings. Better than Thys Van Vliet, better than anyone ever.

  • @chryzippus

you kinda gave me chills with your recollection of this song.

    thank you.

it is so so outside of "regular radio songs"

thanks for sharing your remembrance of this song.

  • @chryzippus maaan, what a memory

  • @chryzippus You lost your virginity in 4 minutes 17 seconds?.. hmmm disappointment all around I guess*LOL*

  • @brereton1113 Thanks to this song I can re-live that moment over and over again :)

  • @chryzippus Because you associate it with your first BANG!

  • @chryzippus Must have been a quickie :)

  • I remember listening to this song on FM105 in the early 80's. I've been a YES fan since 72. I thumbed 77 miles to see them in Nov. I think Wild Turkey was the opening act. I got ripped. and I couldn't tell if Yes was dudes or chicks. I was 17 yrs old. Got a ride home with a head that was in my artclass. Luckyme, It was 24 degrees that nite . Saw again in 75. This time I had a 71 Malibu convert. Still have it.! It's a shame that great bands like YES and Grandfunk aren't in RokhallFame!

  • @ zorozornes: I haven't heard the term 'head' in man years. Life is good!

    TIR

  • great tune, thanks for posting

  • Would be music if they posted the WHOLE song. Too bad cuz the part after this is very beautiful

  • THIS IS MUSIC

  • Love Jon Anderson.

  • "You'll nevah take me alive, coppah. If I go, the girl goes wit me, see. Got it? Get it."

  • awesome

  • My father was telling me the other day how he hasn't heard this song for almost 20 years!

"Father love do you work, do you work for Mother? Chances could call and accept that, be no other. Science as it might, disappear correspond with colour. Chance is the fruit, will outlive, what is now the brother."

    Favourite part!

  • That's so MY favorite part too. you got great taste!

  • lol

  • mr.cairo rocks

  • Me recuerda al buen gusto de mi papa y hermano por la musica!.

  • yes, this is a great song!

  • the 70s 80s great musicians did great music i still remember

great songs i was just 10 years old!, the music of today sounds

alll the same, crap just like a neverending video game!!!!! rap.pop, rock!!! well vangelis is a mastermusician!

  • Well, I agree most are crap...usually what passes on radio or on TV, but somne are pretty good. I listen to some alternative rock or symphonic/gothic metal and it sounds pretty nice since those musics have their roots in classical.

  • Am i crazy in thinkking this is the very first RAP title b4 any other ?? Anyhoo love this Song......

  • Yes you are :p since hip-hop basically began in the 70s, and that the first "commercial" records were released in the late 70s. See "King Tim III", "Rapper's Delight" or "Groovy Ghost Show".

  • What can i say vangelis makes brilliant music but the video totaly sucks .

  • You, sir, are wrong in your assumptions about 80s music.

  • The 80's killed music!!!!!!.. oh shit I'm going to hell..

  • ya you really are.... the 80s were fucking awesome!

  • 2.04. Didnt realise Gordon Ramsey was in this.

  • Yep, I'm another on the long list here who's dad played this all the time when i was like 5-9yrs old. Very emotive for me now. Didn't like it all that much at the time though. I guess concept albums are a little over a 6yr olds head. I prefred Dire Strates LOL.

  • Superbe classique!

  • God I haven't heard this in ages. I can't find this on iTunes...nuts...

  • ace !!!! still sounds fresh

  • This is a classic case of a song that is best with no video. The imagery in my mind of this amazing song cannot be matched by anyone.

  • get the money

  • super music

  • Mafia..Mafia & Mafia..

  • No one today can come close to this great, original musicv! NO ONE!

  • You bet !!!

  • I think some black rapper has stolen this tune and they play it on the radio now.

  • They steal everything.

  • Oh no!!! :(

  • this takes me back, ive tried to find this song for years,

now i,ve found it wow,,,i,ll buy u the whole factory sweetheart ,,,,

    magnificent

when i first heard this ,,i was having the best times of my life,, about 20 years ago,

thanks to jamie , big davie , scott and the rest of the maidens guys

    SUPERB

  • Amazing song!!!!!

  • No worries. this guy will be dead soon.

  • vangelis is a big new age music composer. no one else can compare him

  • vangelis is a genious musician..this whole tune is done on synths and moog keyboards..he's a poineer in the new age music relm...

  • I agree , I listen to this song 3 x a month,

  • Damn shame it's not the whole song.

  • it can't be..the song's too long for regular video air play !! i love the whole tune from begining to end !!!!

  • They really wanted this to be a true early 80's vid. This moment seals it for them 3:20

  • LOL @ 1:20

    Vangelis and Jon are there

  • Isn't this 12 minutes ?

  • a great song and super vid!!!

  • whole that album is so great

I was listening it all the time when I was a baby, cuz my father got crazy on this. It just stucked in my mind ! Now I am 22 years old and still love to listen it over and over.

    magic

  • She came, as in the book, Mickey Spillane

    That Saturday night dark masquerade

Had filled his friend with lead, the same, sweetheart

But then, as nothing happens quite the same

    Investigation is the game

He had to check her story right away-he dead

Sam Spade his buddy Archer first to go he got it

She spelt it out, how could they know the 'Fatman' got it -he dead

Her sister didn't really live at all-confusion-he dead

His chase led to the Fatman, to face the friends of Mr. Cairo

  • was this single released before or after the I'll find my way home single in the UK?

  • Hey Vanax, (Vanax is an artist) This (video) is a unique little song/video, reminds me of your artwork, I thought this might appeal to you

  • Spek, the extreme chiaroscuro does resemble my Goth series, yes. *S*

  • I heard this song 1st time in mid 80's , still moves me now ,,Jon Anderson still had it, killer, killer, music for the time

  • but the full version is as long as 12:09

and much better than this, epic really

  • Greeting from Temanggung to all Jons fans. I had the tape but it ended up when my little daughter pulled it off the cassette someday in 1995. Anybody can tell me who are The friends of Mr Cairo actually refers to? I have been so curious since then.

  • its just a tribute to how hollywood glamorized the american gangster.

lots of films from that era centered around the bad guys and the whole mr. cairo thing is because of the movie, the maltese falcon that takes place in egypt

  • Thanks urbanshaggy..your info has answerred my long time curiousity and surely will make me able to sleep well from now on :)

  • Jon Anderson as a Gangster! LOL....: ) Picture him saying " OK , STICK EM UP!

    With his childlike voice.

  • I prefer my broads to be clean shaven but I'll make an exception in this case since the bearded broad smoking that severed peepee like it's a cigar is sooo sexy.

  • I love Jon Anderson's voice ! Great and classic. The closest thing to it is probably Yulia Volkova's voice. Jon has said that "great work" will happen in 2009. Can't wait.

  • GREAT SONG

    MAKE ME ENJOY MUSIC AGAIN

  • Vangelis is one of the sexiest chicks in music. I am so turned on by women who smoke cigars. Grrrrrrrrrrowl. Purrrrrrrrrrr. Yum.

  • Why did that bearded broad bite off a black man's penis and keep it in her mouth all through this video.

  • gungajoomjoom ,what are you trying to do here .

    -insulting ?

-showing that you are stupid ?

-or are you just ignorant ?

What makes you compare Vangelis to a broad ?

  • my dad used to play this record all the time when i was a little girl too! i love it :)

  • My dad used to play this album all the time when I was a little girl. I was always fascinated by this song. When I found it again I was so happy.

  • wow ,, this used to put me to sleep back in the 80's ,,nice to see it again,Jon Anderson is awesome singer , to bad YES broke up, Steve from Salem , MA

  • Thanks for uploading. I've got the album on vinyl. I remember listening to this when it was new on CHOM FM radio in Montreal circa 1981.

  • MASTERPIECE... i buy the whole factory !!

  • I bought this album back in the day and I am so sorry I lost it. I think I thought there would be new stuff to replace it but I was so wrong. Folks today can't play or read music. The quality of the recording is lost here on You Tube. Find it and play it loud!

  • Hmm, how did this become Jon Anderson solo? This was Jon and Vangelis. I would also like to point that Vangelis actually looks like a gangster!

  • I wasn't sure what you meant, but now I see. The credits are to Jon Anderson. Vangelis is left off! Shame. There's no doubt, the album was created and credited to Jon and Vangelis.
