Hey people. I’m a progressive rock music journalist and I thought you might be interested in reading my recent interview with Jon at Sea of Tranquility. I've also reviewed his newest album at examiner.com. Thanks!
Guys, I was 6 years old when this was released and this song always brings back magic memories. And yep, they rarely make songs like this anymore. Such a pity.
My god!!! I work with two male 20 year old's and they listen to music that should be best left for gay night clubs! What is happening??? Well I'm fighting back as I'm raising my twin eleven year old girls on old school rock which includes a heavy dose of Prog. and then not to mention my 8 month old boy who loves Yes and Porcupine Tree.
Wow! I was listening to "Asia" and read that some of the group are from "Yes". So I wondered what the singers name was. I find out, and type Jon's name in. When I see this song, I'm thinking, that's famiiar. OMG. I haven't heard this for years. Somewhere, I have this on a tape when I recorded them on a crappy Radio Shack cassette recorder and mom or dad would walk in half way through. I'll have to go through my dusty tapes and LP's and crank some real music. Thanks for posting.
@dj6927 The lead singer for Asia was John Wetton (also played Bass) The members of Yes in Asia were Steve Howe on guitar and Geoff Downs on keyboards.
Jon and Vangelis is a match made in heaven. I love their collaborations. I wish they would launch a tour together. But I don't think Vangelis performs very often in public.
Who ever you are that posted this... Thank You!!!. I have hummed the riff of this for damn near 30 years. Could not remember the title for the life of me until just the other day. This was out in the day when you had to listen the the radio to hear a song if you liked it. Too instant today, nothing EVER stands out...
This is one of those great songs that got me into the whole yes thing and so on when I was growing up during the early 80s.There was other very moving songs on that album that which has inspired me to sing them all until I knew of all of the lyrics off by heart. Very amazing indeed.
we are awakening, to understand no aspect of our lives today has the same level of creativity, as it did , not just the music, but the food, the equipment we are sold, even the politics is all the same old drone, labour, conservative, liberal, democrate, rebublican....they are all the same, Jon Anderson like John lennon, today would not be wanted in the music industry....unless they droned out the same repetative rubbish the corporates told them to produce
The Friends of Mr. Cairo was one of the earliest cds I recall buying. I loved the title song and it made me recall those wonderful days at the local cinema---a rundown last run theater but the magic was not diminished. I spent a great portion of my youth in the seventies watching all types of movies. The song's nostalgia stings me in nice but sad way.
YAAAY I FOUND IT. I have been looking for this song for a while.
Around Halloween in the mid 1980s the only radio station worth listening to played this song ad nauseum. I used to think there was no other music choices. I think they played it a million times on Halloween
@XurchVeteran Soul and light can always see / The meeting of true love and she / This silent night and I, / I guess a lonely mind might see
They are so missing the best part of the song. It always used to drive me nuts when they'[d play the short version on the radio. I was always waiting for that much neglected second half.
Ha! Back in the day, I bought four or five Yes albums looking for this song, only to find that it was Jon, and Vangelis. I finally found it, and still have the vinyl.
@chryzippus It's certainly the best thing Vangelis ever did and it is almost the best thing Jon Anderson ever did. He has got the finest voice in the entire history of vocal recordings. Better than Thys Van Vliet, better than anyone ever.
I remember listening to this song on FM105 in the early 80's. I've been a YES fan since 72. I thumbed 77 miles to see them in Nov. I think Wild Turkey was the opening act. I got ripped. and I couldn't tell if Yes was dudes or chicks. I was 17 yrs old. Got a ride home with a head that was in my artclass. Luckyme, It was 24 degrees that nite . Saw again in 75. This time I had a 71 Malibu convert. Still have it.! It's a shame that great bands like YES and Grandfunk aren't in RokhallFame!
My father was telling me the other day how he hasn't heard this song for almost 20 years!
"Father love do you work, do you work for Mother? Chances could call and accept that, be no other. Science as it might, disappear correspond with colour. Chance is the fruit, will outlive, what is now the brother."
Well, I agree most are crap...usually what passes on radio or on TV, but somne are pretty good. I listen to some alternative rock or symphonic/gothic metal and it sounds pretty nice since those musics have their roots in classical.
Yes you are :p since hip-hop basically began in the 70s, and that the first "commercial" records were released in the late 70s. See "King Tim III", "Rapper's Delight" or "Groovy Ghost Show".
Yep, I'm another on the long list here who's dad played this all the time when i was like 5-9yrs old. Very emotive for me now. Didn't like it all that much at the time though. I guess concept albums are a little over a 6yr olds head. I prefred Dire Strates LOL.
I was listening it all the time when I was a baby, cuz my father got crazy on this. It just stucked in my mind ! Now I am 22 years old and still love to listen it over and over.
Greeting from Temanggung to all Jons fans. I had the tape but it ended up when my little daughter pulled it off the cassette someday in 1995. Anybody can tell me who are The friends of Mr Cairo actually refers to? I have been so curious since then.
its just a tribute to how hollywood glamorized the american gangster.
lots of films from that era centered around the bad guys and the whole mr. cairo thing is because of the movie, the maltese falcon that takes place in egypt
I prefer my broads to be clean shaven but I'll make an exception in this case since the bearded broad smoking that severed peepee like it's a cigar is sooo sexy.
I love Jon Anderson's voice ! Great and classic. The closest thing to it is probably Yulia Volkova's voice. Jon has said that "great work" will happen in 2009. Can't wait.
wow ,, this used to put me to sleep back in the 80's ,,nice to see it again,Jon Anderson is awesome singer , to bad YES broke up, Steve from Salem , MA
I bought this album back in the day and I am so sorry I lost it. I think I thought there would be new stuff to replace it but I was so wrong. Folks today can't play or read music. The quality of the recording is lost here on You Tube. Find it and play it loud!
I wasn't sure what you meant, but now I see. The credits are to Jon Anderson. Vangelis is left off! Shame. There's no doubt, the album was created and credited to Jon and Vangelis.
Edward G & all those guys who always shot between the eyes! Classic.

She came, as in the book, Mickey Spillane
That Saturday night dark masquerade
Had filled his friend with lead, the same, sweetheart
But then, as nothing happens quite the same
Investigation is the game
He had to check her story right away-he dead
Sam Spade his buddy Archer first to go he got it
She spelt it out, how could they know the 'Fatman' got it -he dead
Her sister didn't really live at all-confusion-he dead
His chase led to the Fatman, to face the friends of Mr. Cairo

its just a tribute to how hollywood glamorized the american gangster.
lots of films from that era centered around the bad guys and the whole mr. cairo thing is because of the movie, the maltese falcon that takes place in egypt

Jon Anderson as a Gangster! LOL....: ) Picture him saying " OK , STICK EM UP!
With his childlike voice.

Can't wait.

Vangelis is one of the sexiest chicks in music. I am so turned on by women who smoke cigars. Grrrrrrrrrrowl. Purrrrrrrrrrr. Yum.

Why did that bearded broad bite off a black man's penis and keep it in her mouth all through this video.

gungajoomjoom ,what are you trying to do here .
-insulting ?
-showing that you are stupid ?
-or are you just ignorant ?
What makes you compare Vangelis to a broad ?

Thanks for uploading. I've got the album on vinyl. I remember listening to this when it was new on CHOM FM radio in Montreal circa 1981.

I bought this album back in the day and I am so sorry I lost it. I think I thought there would be new stuff to replace it but I was so wrong. Folks today can't play or read music. The quality of the recording is lost here on You Tube. Find it and play it loud!

Hmm, how did this become Jon Anderson solo? This was Jon and Vangelis. I would also like to point that Vangelis actually looks like a gangster!

I wasn't sure what you meant, but now I see. The credits are to Jon Anderson. Vangelis is left off! Shame. There's no doubt, the album was created and credited to Jon and Vangelis.
