@felixthecatboy AND DTS 5.1 Master Audio! Not sure how much of an improvement that'll be since in the credits it states Moroder recorded the whole thing on a Sony PCM-3324 which maxes out around 48kHz @ 16-bits... and if I recall that's precisely what comes out of the optical line on the laserdisc release... but it's nice to finally support the artist!
There's nothing ridiculous about it. The sequence is brilliantly written (clever move by Fredersen, who gets to remove Maria from his way and regain the heart of his son) and Moroder's music score is wonderful.
I used to watch this movie over and over again, trying to gloss over the cheesy points, and it's still a favorite for stunts like the one at the church bell, but I don't know if I want to spend eBay robbery money getting a DVD to replace my VHS copy.
I was wondering if anyone noticed something with the skeleton (with the bone/flute). In this version (Moroder), he put his hands left and right before playing the instrument (2:13). But in the restored version, he holds his arms in the air before playing. Alternate take? Check the difference.
Makes me wonder if there was a slightly different print sent to America for distribution. It wasn't unheard of at the time; Murnau released three different prints of "The Last Laugh"...
I wonder when they will release the full version of 'Metropolis'. I was thilled to learn about the copy of the complete movie found in Brazil and sent to Berlin for analysis and restoration last year. I can't wait to see this integral work of art. Even Fritz Lang said he never saw the full movie more than once. We will be priviligied.
You are most definitely not alone. The entire version of the original movie was lost for over 80 years. As of last year, it now has been found, this version featuring musical scores was created in an attempt to 'fill in the gaps' - It's been panned by purists but I think it's a masterpiece in its own right.
Metropolis is a phenomenal movie, and if not for the moroder edition, I would never have been introduced to it. It is powerful and moving on so many levels.
Being so old, it is necessary to try not to judge the dated aspects of the film that we are unable to relate to.
Those who are able to do that are able to take as much out of it as myself and many of you have.
Metropolis, the jewl of german expresionism of '20's. Watch the employees movement and faces. It was a methafore about the man explotation and industrial revolution, chaing beauty for machines. If it wasn't by Giorgio, this incredible film would be lost.
I think the "ridiculous" refers to the Moroder soundtrack and not the actual film footage. At least that's what it seems like. Miami Vice Metropolis, anyone?
I've always thought of this scene as showing one of the screen's greatest acts of evil. His father turns this figure of innocence and hope into a whore, perverting and degrading her image for the amusement of the upper class. It justifies Freder's nightmarish fever dream, a prophecy of death. Plus, great music by Moroder and Mercury. There's nothing LOLZ about it! And I can't imagine the kind of unthinking ignorance that would point and laugh at such a masterpiece.
I can appreciate the humor in it being dated and odd, but beyond that it's my second favorite scene in the movie. The Moroder portion here has one of the best uses of harmony, and coupled with Lang's expression, it makes for something that to modern eyes can be appreciated, and to old eyes is nothing short of shocking. I don't think I could have described it better than 84Summers.
You should check out "Metropolis Refound", the hour-long documentary that aired last Sunday on TCM with the full restoration. I get extremely angry at people who just look at the disco-techno-synth soundtrack and forget that this film is extremely important. It was the first "sci-fi" film, Lang was waaaaay ahead of his time, and this movie influenced and shaped the look and feel of at least 50% of the science fiction that came after it in some way.

Well, I happen to think this is marvellous, but to each his own I guess! Thanks very much for posting, good quality clips of this are hard to come by and sure beats my worn-out VHS copy. I wonder if you could post the first twenty minutes of the film, from the title synopsis to the M-Machine blowing up? :)
This is fantastic. Great music from Moroder!

it could be great using Ghost in the shell soundtrack with the music of Kenji Kawai or Yoko Kanno.

What a masterpiece! What actress! Wonderful!
But what about the entire version? wasn't it lost?
Marcologo71 2 years ago
No it wasn't, and more keeps turning up.
For the best version, digitally remastered with the fantastic 80's sound track (as here) look up Metropolis REDUX.
A remastered DVD is now available for around $20 US, as well as a new digital sound track .
It's brilliant.
