  • Sandow is a bit flushed out by the stage lights - he needs some pro tan LOL. Great physique from back in the day but I find it hard to believe his stats by looking at him:

    # Bodyweight, 199

    # Height, 5ft 8.5 ins

    # Waist, 29 ins

    # Chest, 48 ins

    # Neck, 18.5 ins

    # Biceps, 19 ins

    # Forearms, 17 ins

    # Thighs, 26.5 ins

    # Calves, 18 ins

  • @xrisp those stats just can't be right. he would look like a modern bodybuilder with those ;P

  • cGeer15, I'm curious, what does 150g of carbs LOOK like? is it a plate of pasta? A couple of Pizza slices?

And as for the proteins and fats... how much of THOSE is ideal for getting naturally chiseled like Sandow?

I'm a bit skeptical just because cutting out carbs sounds like the Atkins diet rather than sound bodybuilding advice... but I'm not an expert. If you want to limit carbs to between 50-100 grams, how much is that, and how much meat, cheese, etc. should you eat to balance it out?

  • @susumu07 Plate and some. The rest should come from proteins and fats and of course you balance it out, unless you're on VLCD. :)

  • @susumu07 eat every 3 hours. small meals. protein(dairy, eggs, fish, chicken) and fibrous carbs(fruits and vegetables) in every meal. starchy carbs like(rice, pasta, potatoes and bread) only after training( half an hour after at most; the sooner the better) cut out sweets and refined sugars altogether. if you do the above consistently, depending on your training, age and genes. you will start seeing excellent results in a month or so. oh and please don't start counting calories; it's not worth it

  • I agree with you, Flavia.

  • Sandow had an incredible physique even by today's standards, and we're talking 116 years ago. The guy was unbelievable. Just think what he could have made of his body had he filled it with all the drugs available today.

  • bosszeroboss, Sandow may have been pressured to make an absolute freak of himself had he lived today. I wish all modern athletes - & not just bodybuilders - would take him as a role model in this regard!!

  • No junk food in them days.

  • Show me a bodybuilder who can do standing backflips and do one hand chinups on either finger including the thumbs like Sandow used to do with ease!

  • they can't man, bodybuilders train for hypertrophy the functionality of there strength is not much more then a normal man who just trains to stay fit

  • Sandow is a true legend of bodybuilding

he was a natutal guy,not full of

    steroids like most todays bodybuilders

    are.

  • Very good...and GAY :D

  • VERY ANTIGO[/INGLES JOEL SANTANA]

  • He died from trying to pull his car by himself and suffered a brain damage i don't exactly know what's it called though

  • but there is alot of controversy surrounding his death and alot of rumours 2 the most common is saying he died of a stroke.

  • but in any case he was VERY popular with the ladies.... and quite charismatic to boot.

I don't know really how he died, but interestingly, many of these old-school strongmen died young.

Some simply over-exerted themselves, others had a family history of medical problems which even exercise couldn't cure (like Louis Cyr).

Some just flat-out ate too much fatty food (yes they didn't look fat and they were all muscular, but it still built up in their ARTERIES and HEART and killed them silently).

  • Back in those days it wasn't considered as bad for you. nutrition was not that well-understood, and even strongmen SOMETIMES ate unhealthy diets (though it didn't show.)

Sandow apparently smoked cigars too, and Louis Cyr was notorious for overeating (which made him a bit plumper than most other strongmen, even though he was the strongest of them all).

  • (Not a bodybuilder/interestind in it, although it' spretty amazing how this bloke got to where he did)

Also remember that people in general didn't live that long back then. Medical care wasn't what is is today.

  • True, but there was less obesity, and they ate better/exercised better. When these guys started eating like modern Americans though, they started looking like modern Americans.

  • Saturated Fat doesn't clog your arteries. Metabolic Syndrome precurses clogged arteries which is a small dense LDL inflammation in your arterial cell wall- which you can get from a 0 fat diet.- This is the result of eating excessive CARBS and continually spiking insulin levels through BAD CARB food choices- ie. grains and sugars! Yes, Sandow would have some damage from smoking cigars, as well as extreme inflammation due to continual weights lifted, but his diet was more healthy than OURS.

  • @cGeer15 speak for yourself Geer!

  • It's impossible to lose fat on a diet that contains over 150 grams of carbohydrates per day, period. You are just creating WAY too much insulin release which will burn out your adrenals, make you insulin resistant, etc. All things that are not good. This is only possible through excessive consumption of grains and sugars. You're unlikely to get fat on fruits and vegetables, but test your blood sugar after eating a few slices of bread...

  • no- that was in regards to you remark about "Americans"

Americans continually forget to read and look at their own passports-.

everyone *else'* is an American in USA

  • This must be one of the most dumbfounded comments I've seen on youtube. It is perfectly possible to lose fat on a diet with more than 150g of carbs.

Fat loss is about eating less calories than you consume over the same period.

  • Actually, that is what WEIGHT LOSS is about. Your body will hold onto muscle IF it is given enough protein and fat, it will BREAK DOWN MUSCLE (catabolism) if you are consuming low levels of calories, and primarily carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are NOT essential to cellular maintenance, because your body will convert excess fats and proteins to glucose through gluconeogenesis, for the fuel your brain might need- glucose, which you get from... CARBS! Fruits and vegetables are good of course.

  • If you want to put your body in an anabolic state you must fill your glycogen stores, but most people don't do that- they consume insulin spiking carbs and fat at the same time which doubles the fat your body accumulates. Your body uses fat for fuel the LOWER the amount of carbs that you eat. This is pretty basic and universally accepted by those that know about nutrition and physical training. If you don't put the focus on nutrition that you put on training your results wont be ideal period.

  • So as i said, you an lose fat while eating 150g of carbs every day.

  • Only if you are immediately active after every single time you consume carbohydrates- for a long enough time to produce an effect and burn off any instant glucose you are receiving as an insulin byproduct. Ideally fat burning occurs between 50-100 TOTAL carbohydrate grams for the day. This is enough to keep muscle WHILE burning fat in a mild state of ketogenesis.

  • sandow didnt die of a syphillis,he die'd in a freak accident when the car he was traveling in got a puncture and he lifted it up......all the mucsles in his core ripped and he dropped dead instantly.

his wife was ashamed that when he died he was on a country lane wit women and she set out to destroy pictures of him.......

  • steroid free!

  • Right you are, according to Arnold's book "Arnold Schwarzenegger's Encyopedia of Bodybuilding" He tried showing off his strength by lifting the car out of a ditch and it caused a hemmorage that killed him.

  • You're wrong.

He was married, had two daughters, and has living descendants today. Not everything that you read is true.

You might also learn to spell 'gay'.

Sandow was not only a bodybuilder, he INVENTED bodybuilding, and without the use of steroids.

  • Also, he killed Dr. Venture

  • the first, the best, my model

  • He was not really a bodybuilder, He was a strongman. He was able to lift 500lb with his little finger among other feats of strength, but he was quite unique for his time seeing that most other strongmen were pretty bulky where he was very lean and chiseled. He wasnt gay. He died of syphilis. He use to let women touch his body and they would faint. Quite the ladies man.

  • I think it does Sandow a disservice to describe him as a 'bodybuilder' to be honest.

  • Sandow is probably the only bodybuilder who could do a standing backflip on the ground too

  • type in craig titus backflip

  • @LukinhasParkour Are you really sure? Do you mean Sandow 'was' the only or 'is' the only one? It's not really a feat to do a backflip for some bodybuilders.

  • @LukinhasParkour Roelly Winklaar. watch roelly and quincy winklaar guest posing february 2010 at around 7:40

  • HarleyStcool,

that time there were no steroids!

a lot of people don't even know who is Eugen Sandow because he is not as muscular as the bodybuilders from today, but i think that guy is the shit! If you took arnold, coleman, zane, mentzer, cutler and all these guys and deprive them from steroids they wouldn't be half as big as they were/are now

Sandow it's all natural, and that is pretty impressive.

  • Imagine if you take someone like frank zane back to the early 1900's, frank zane wwould be considered zueses son. Is it just me or is sandow wearing a diaper?

  • Is it just me or did Sandow(not his real name as he is Austrian)move in a wee bit too girly a manner?

It made me want to look away for a moment.

In any event he's pretty good.

  • I read somewhere that he was ghey.

  • he was Purussian

  • he has the best bicep i have seen on a bb

  • This guy was the first bodybuilder. He is the one who started fitness and bodybuilding.

  • SAN-DOW!

  • Sandow has looked even better than this. At around age 30, his muscles are rippled to astounding heights and he's a little bigger.

He also wears a chalky powder to make him look like a statue, but it takes away some definition (along with the film style too). Lou Ferrigno loses some of his rippled muscle definition when they paint him green for Hulk.

There's another turn-of-the-century athlete who has 20 inch arms. Modern bodybuilders will still cuss them out because they like to be jerks.

  • For everyone dissing sandow. He may not have huge muscles like today. HOWEVER, he most likely is THE strongest man in history: He could Lift 500 Lbs with his middle finger

Bending iron bars with his hands

    Breaking chains with his biceps.

He could expand his chest and snap chains

He would lift a barbell with one hand above his head and two men would pop out of the barbells.

A175 Lb man could step on the palm of his hand and he could set him on a table.

    Believe it or not

  • He was very strong but never the strongest man in the world neither even remotely approaching strongest man in history. The fingerlift is seldomly practised today, 500lbs never were anything really special among strongmen of old.

Bending iron bars was a common feat as was chainbreaking. The two-man lift was made employing the bentpress, still one heck of a feat though. Not to take anything away from Sandow, but he never stood a chance against men like Saxon, Goerner or Cyr.

  • Sandow perhaps could have competed with Saxon, but Goerner and Cyr were just BEYOND belief. Those guys were crazy strong.

Cyr frickin' lifted two TONS on his back. Sandow was actually scared to go near the guy, and he repeatedly turned down challenges to compete with him (what can we say, Sandow was a great self-promoter, he knew better than to enter a competition he had no chance of winning). Cyr was a huge French Canadian dude, by some accounts his whole family was genetically strong.

  • @susumu07 ah wuh wuh... this guy is the father of modern body building. those guys may have been stronger but this guy looked a whole lot better. he decided what he wanted to look like and in what proportions and then worked his way to those proportions and developed poses to show off those muscles. Honestly those other two guys knew no such thing about appearance or health. they were just strong. And yeah sandow could not outlift them but they could not beat him in body building.

  • I dont think the guy who is 3 times bigger then sandow can do a back flip...enough said ;)

  • Lol at the people saying *oh im bigger than him* etc, well this was like 100+ years ago bare that in mind and have a good hard think and compare food/training methods from then with now -.- .

  • and who is the mother?? lol

  • Sandow was a true man..I have his photos framed in my office..for his time period he was absolutely beautiful, NATURAL ! He may have not been a very large man like you see today, yes there are bigger BUT he wasnt on steriods! EUGEN SANDOW ROCKS!

  • And i suppose you can lift 2 people with one arm right?

  • yeah I'd like to see you bent press anything close to half what sandow could do

  • If you're so hung up on the difference between bodybuilding and powerlifting then realize that Sandow was neither: he was a physical culturist.

Body Building and Power Lifting are both specialized elements of physical culture taken to extremes that are detrimental to the other aspects. The all-round nature of Sandow means he looks good AND he can back it up. Ask every man in the world who he would rather have the body of: ronnie coleman or eugene sandow, and most would pick sandow.

  • Well said my man. Take a look at my channel. I am a natural 'bodybuilder', I train mainly with powerlifting movements like Reg Park used to, 3 times a week. I do old fashioned rig-cage expansion excersises. SANDOW all the way!ASJCHAOTIC I'll bet everything I have my side-chest pose makes yours look like a little dweebs and that I could bench you AND the bench. If you want to LOOK strong, BE STRONG! ... or take your steroids because that's the only other way you're gonna 'look' strong.

  • remember that sandow was the first bodybuilder in the world and in that time there were no bench press or any other equipment

  • robnilla18 Sandow was great. You are only cocky. Who you are, little shadow. More respect for Sandow. by the way, you need load good upbringing

  • he need a shit load of chest.

  • Hello this is the father of bodybuilding you are talking about, have more respect.

  • congratulations on making the most ignorant post of the century.

  • If the video's from 1894, why does the date at the beginning say MCMVII (1907)?

  • Sry but you, COMPLETELY, have NO idea what you're saying - Eugen Sandow was the very man who started bodybuilding and strength training as we know it today. A little bit of respect please.

  • A very GREAT man!

  • A bit of respect please! Modern day bodybuilders & strongmen stand on the shoulders of men like Sandow. In another 100 years he'll still be remembered. Who will remember you;)

  • Dont be an ass - Sandow was an acrobat and circus strongman as well as the first 'bodybuilder'.

Given a little training (if he had existed in this day and age) with his strength and athleticism he would have been a killer cage fighter

  • His muscle development doesnt look too spectacular here, but I guess this footage is somewhere around 100 years old and they had little idea how to properly display muscles like his.

Im suprised someone so small could lift two men overhead with one hand though, but then alot of the olde time strongman lifts were full body affairs involving huge amounts of technique

  • But please...strength IS technique.. No strengthfeat is 100% raw. You get strong from practicing what you want to do again and again...And add more weigth as you get stronger. Even the "modern day" lift such as the bench press includes a lot of technique..

And is a "full body affair" if you press your absolute max..

  • man he was ripped

  • nice back and 8 pack but he could do better with his chest,,

  • Sandow pioneered the entire movement of popular exercise. He came before Lionel Strongdfort, Bernarr McFadden, Earle E. Liederman and Charles Atlas.

  • He was one of the first to advocate free-school lunches for children, pre-natal care for women, and donated generously to charity and to the London Olympics. Friend of Thomas Edison, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the King of England, Sandow was a legend in his own time. The Mr. Olympia contest uses a statue of Sandow as it's trophy. Burial:Putney Vale Cemetery London, England. Hail & respect to the Founder, may he never be forgotten!

  • He soon made his "Muscle Displays" the main feature of a Vaudeville stage show and at the Chicago Worlds Fair. There were no posing routines or accepted posing. There was not even body building as we know it today. This guy was a pioneer. Sandow also built a series of gyms across Europe, America, and other points around the world. He wrote the first & several popular books on bodybuilding and health.

  • Eugen Sandow Birth:Apr.2,1867 Death:Oct.16,1925 The most famous physique champion 100 years ago, indeed perhaps the first modern bodybuilder was Eugen Sandow. Born Friederich Wilhelm Mueller on April 2, 1867. Early in life, and with the help of showman Florenz Ziegfeld, Sandow decided it wasn't enough to simply demonstrate his strength, but to actually display his muscular physique as though it were a work of art.

  • sticking mannnnnnn

  • MCMVII is 1907

  • in the top bodybuilding contest in the world- Mr. Olympia, the winner is presented with a statue of eugene sandow.

  • so sexy

  • 0.0 wow that was relly long time ago

  • that was sick man

  • wooooohhhh
