  • Gigi was fitted with a radio transmitter upon her release, which enabled cetologists to follow her progress for some time, and even after it fell off she was spotted several times after that. As a result, we know that over the years she had at least 3 calves, even though it has been many years since she has been positively identified.

  • They showed Gigi's release on television and every one of her handlers - male and female - cried when she was released. She was a very sweet, affectionate and loving baby according to all who were involved with her care.

And she loved having her back and belly scratched.

    ;-)

  • Gigi was not a rescue. Gigi was captured as a young calf off the U. S. Pacific coast in March of 1971, studied in captivity for a year at Sea World, San Diego, and released back into the wild in March of 1972. National Geographic magazine did a fairly extensive article on Gigi a few months following her release.

I was a kid at the time, but I lived in Los Angeles, and I remember my whole family and many of my friends following the story of Gigi on local television with great fascination.

  • This one is GiGi--- this was 20+ years before JJ.

  • wow thats cool! The only grey whale i heard seaworld rescued was in the 1990s!
