Not a big Cowboys fan, but a great video with HOF players on this team including Staubach and Lilly. Lilly one of the greatest D-lineman in history-no question. Best to ask someone like Dan Dierdorf who faced Page, Greene and Lilly in the 70's when he was with the Cardinals-he said Lilly was the best DT of them all..
i agree lilly may not be no. 2 overall good but hes def better than page...compare what the two of them did in their respective super bowls vs. the dolphins...
@temps45 He was not better than Page LOL! Super Bowls are a team thing, not an individual thing. And come on man, the 1971 Dolphins were not close to the team they were in 1973.
Alan Page was the 1st defensive player to win an MVP award. Bob Lilly was great, but to say he is "definitely" better than Page is up for debate
@GialloHorror Page was great, no doubt. But I think Page won MVP in '71 because had it not been for that defense, the Vikings are a 6-8 team. Remember, that club was blown out by a mediocre San Diego team and lost at home to a sub-par Chicago unit. Remember, Tom Landry designed an entire defense around Lilly. And can you name the other three starters on the Cowboys' D-line for Super Bowls V and VI? I'm sure you can name two of Page's three mates on the line for the '71 Vikings.
@DNSKansas Why does it matter if I can name two of Page's teammates? I could name all three on that line, and their linebackers, and sceondary. I could do it with the 1971 Cowboys too.
All I'm saying is that it's a good debate. Personally I think Page was better, but I wouldn't say he was "definitely" better
Bob Lilly is the greatest defensive tackle to play football. If I were building a team from scratch, I would draft him first or second. The only player I might draft ahead of him would be a franchise QB.
Just look at how many all-time greats were on the '71 Cowboys. Staubach, Garrison, Thomas, Calvin Hill, Alworth, Hayes, Ditka, Niland, Nye. Neely. On Defense, Lily, Jordan, Howley, Cornell Green, Renfro. What a lineup!!
@oneputtsteven Certainly on paper they have more talent than any other team in history. It's very difficult to compare teams from different eras, but there is no doubt the '71 Cowboys are one of the greatest, if not the greatest, teams since the start of the super bowl era.
And btw, I'm not even a Cowboys fan, I'm a Lions fan. I just recognize great players and teams when I see them.
Bob Lilly needs not apologize to anyone about his helmet toss. Along with Merlin Olsen, the most consistent, durable , DT ever. True class thru and thru. The young Colt returning Bob's helmet, incidently ,is Robbie Nichols.

@oneputtsteven I belive Forrest Gregg and Herb Adderley were also on that team, albeit, at the ends of their respective careers.

@Ziggie1o1 I'll put the '71 Cowboys up against any team, includling the '72 Dolphins.
After installing Staubach at QB they won every game, indeed, they dominated.

@oneputtsteven Maybe we could of had a rematch if the Cowboys kept Thomas..They never had that great back again until Tony Dorsett..

@oneputtsteven Oh yeah, and you missed Rayfield Wright, hall of fame offensive tackle and arguably the best o-lineman on that team.

@Ziggie1o1 Oops I sure did. The big cat was one of the best.

Bob Lilly throwing that helmet up reminded me of Mary Tyler Moore with the beret. He's gonna make it after all. LOL.
