It's called a slide. It's essentially a hard smooth piece of metal that can be used to play different notes on a guitar without physically fretting the notes.

Use your neck pickup, add some gain from your amp, and then roll off the volume (just slightly) and set your tone knob around 6-7 to take off the edge. It should get a warm bluesy tone that way!
