@ZZZ99913 traditionally, theatres had raked stages, which means that the back of the stage(called upstage) is slighty higher than the front of the stage (called downstage). Hence the names upstage and downstage because the back was litterally "up" while the front was "down." This was done to allow better viewing of the actors/dancers on stage. You can expect most older theatres to have a raked stage while it is not a necessity for newer theatres due to modern seating arrangements.
