@captainchrist1986 your literally so good at being wrong, this is a perfect quality recording what's wrong with your ears? I bet you have weird little giraffe ears don't you you strange lank ground-beast.
your right, this is the original version of Captain. its a B-side on the single of The Captain, and its a proper produced version of it. Its actually quite good! despite the fact that i prefer the first three Biffy albums much more than Puzzle and Only Revolutions, Captain grew and grew on me and its actually a fantastic, epic live tune.
I wonder if this is in Berkeley rehearsal studio in Glasgow...I know Biff use that when in Glasgow and they have a facility to record your rehearsal in the room with a multi direction mic hooked up to a CD recorder. My band does this and the quality sounds very similar. The studio version of this on the Captain single is superb.
I absolutely love the old stuff Biffy did a gazillion more times than the new polished records they've been putting out (Puzzle and OR).
But saying THIS recording is good is just wrong. Simon does a horrible job singing as well as Ben and the guitar is way off.
Don't get me wrong, I love Biffy, it's just, no, this is NOT good. Check out the Camden Barfly live videos instead if you want to see some awesome Biffy Clyro performances.
You know, though, Captain's absolutely amazing live, it falls halfway between this and the album version- no horns, just Simon rocking out, but somehow it's still noisier than guitar + horns. Awesome stuff, I was really surprised how it works.
This really just sounds like a recording of a rehearsal...a very early sketch of the new one. The main riff sounds great, crunchy and heavy but I do like the album version with all of the production, brass etc. Who cares if a band wants to sound a bit different as they develop in their career? It would be so boring playing the same shit album after album.
The Jools Holland version wa MAGNIFICENT. I bet Andy Williams was happy to follow it...
This is the orginal. The captain used to be this and then it got changed to what The Captain is now that got released. But this is what it sounded like at first
Quality gear. I like this as much as I dislike The Captain. I'll be buying the single just for the studio version of this gem. It reminds me of the Vertigo of Bliss-era stuff - not as polished as Puzzle or even Infinity Land, and still showing their heavy side. Another classic Biffy b-side.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
OK, the single/album version is a bit too polished. But there'd be no point in polishing this particular jobbie, it's terrible. Not quite as bad as the Buddy Holly cover mind.
@northwindlowlander I agree with your second sentence and I've loved Biffy from the beginning. I really liked the Buddy Holly cover though, they don't simply cover tracks they make it their own in a unique way which is clever because you're not just hearing the same song, you're hearing a completely different take on things and I like that about Biffy's covers.
they re-recorded halp me become captain as a b-side to The Captain? AWESOME. cos that means that even though they're doin all this new stuff with brass and strings and epicness, there's still that dirty, distorted, heavy guitar and screaming side to them. just so happens that right now, it's on their other side. the b-side :)
How the fuck did this song go from this to the final version? This one is awesome, would fit right on Infinity Land, but the final version is pandering to the record label & Radio 1 kiddies who dont buy albums & just stand there in silence at concerts when the album tracks are played. Major labels & success are not bad things, but when they cause a band to completely change their style for the sake of being popular, it's a shame. Makes you think how many bands really are in it for the music.
Well said. This version is way better than the other , more polished one. This one is actually really enjoyable. The new one just expires nonsensical comercial overproduction.
I agree but I'm pleased to see they have recorded this and are using it as a b side to the single. In fact, if you are looking for more experimental or harder rock stuff a lot of their newer b sides sound like older Biffy.
W808XGA, that's interesting. Is it just singles and itunes they can be bought from? Hopefully there's other sources, as I don't use itunes and dont buy singles, which is a shame as I'd love to hear the alternate versions, as it were.
JimmyHart I've heard you can download a lot of B sides off bittorrent and such but if you want to go legally iTunes is actually useless. They have a few but I have found the most extensive collection of b sides can be bought legally off Amazon in their digital download section, not sure if this helps
@JimmyHart1984 gotta think, at least now they can play secc sold out shows, and they are the only band on earth that could, if they wanted to, just play infinity land the whole gig haha
You are aware that Biffy wouldn't have full reign on the final release of the song? Like the record company & sound engineers would highly advise them along certain paths. You need to spend some time in a studio & see that its not just
go in
record song
piece it together if parts were recorded seperately
finished.
Like there is SO much more to the acoustics & producing it to sound as it sounds live whilst cleaning the off notes etc. Hence why a demo sounds different to released
@JimmyHart1984 I agree with pretty much everything you said man. But I think the fact that Biffy are still playing tracks like Jaggy Snake and Liberate the Illiterate at live gigs shows they still have a love for their original music and reward their loyal, hardcore fans with their older and better (my opinion of course) music.
@JimmyHart1984 newer version goes more smoothly and is a better entrance to an album this song is more of a middle track rather a cascade of noise to bring the listener to life in the life of the artist who plays while this version is alot of pretty noises with confused maning. A guy striving to take charge beleaving he will make everything right but is in despair which is something more puzzle rather then revelutions where the captains in mutiny.
@Theduck667 i have but my argument had nothing to do with that it was rather an explanation to why the two version of captain changed favouring one over the other.
it was nothing to do with albums or favouritism on musical tastes im ok with some guy saying they prefere one album over the other that's an opinion an identity. You are just being a music snob biffy clyro are whatever the fuck they are you don't dictate something like that.
Whilst this rare DEMO isnt very well recorded, and the performance isn't as polished as one of their early studio efforts, i think the production of the new version is too far in the opposite direction. A middle ground between this and 'The Captain' could have been reached. I do quite like both versions, but I don't think the song itself is an example of their best work.
i am a biffy clyro fanboy i guess but if they did this song with good production say like infinity land standard and got rid of the brass then this would be one of the best biffy clyro songs by far.
Come on! With a bit of actual, proper recording this version would be AWESOME. There's nothing wrong with a bit of production, but Captain sort of takes the piss.
I agree with you about the production. I personally find the newer biffy tracks overproduced and too clinical. Lacks the raw edge of their earlier albums. Doesn't stop me listening to it though as its still the same great band and songwriting underneath as with this great tune!
Word man. Marmaduke duke are more pop with their latest album with Biffy... People should see them as two seperate bands not distributing the music between the two.
im all up for biffy evolving, thats why they're first three albums were all very different but still amazing, noone here is denying that a band can change and still be as good. but, with biffy its obivous that all the fundamental parts that made biffy so good are the parts that are being cut out or being over produced. basically being turned into over produced predictable pop.
man this version is so much better, they totally over-produced the captain, the horns take so much away from it and the rawness of this version is just lost. it's a shame they took a great song and decided to ruin it

agreed... I fucking love Biffy Clyro - they are my favourite band wiithout a doubt. But the new The Captain is better... much better...
Oh and do you "true biffy fans" (or whatever lol) not realise for a sec that if Simon, James and Ben preferred this one rather than the new one, then this one would wind up on the new album instead?
People who complain about Biffy should make a band better than Biffy IMHO. (Otherwise STFU and embrace the change). lol :)

The "Real Biffy fan club" should go and jump. It's not like they have released an album of happy hardcore, then your constant bitching would be justified. Whoever thinks that the brass is not Biffy need to go and listen to The Weapons are Concealed.. Both versions are fucking awesome BECAUSE its Biffy, not because of the difference of your opinions. The "Real Biffy" fans would support them with whatever they did... before you go hating - I have been a fan since Infinity Land
I don't think its anything to do with the new record label,...if you were offered a shit load of cash when you came from nothing to produce a slightly more radio friendly sound, would you not do it? Especially when it was obviously the way the band are heading with the mountains singles which they did off their own backs - no label guidance...
Mountains was a wedding present to Simon's wife so they made a song that she would like, same reason as Puzzle was written for Simon's mother...
yeah i would but, i would keep marmaduke duke heavy and use biffy clyro to release pop sutff. what i mean is the production has changed significantly since they moved. you have to remember that biffy dont produce thier own tracks. i love the mountains acoustic but its over produced as a single.
Yeah I see what you are saying and I agree with the overproduction to some extent but Biffy do have quite a big say in what their end piece sounds like... I think its just the route they have decided to take..
this version is musically much better than the recently realeased "the captain", it may not sound as polished obviously cos its a live song, but the brass instruments in the new one are fucking awful. i love the quieter harmonies in the middle of this song aswell.
whatever people say, this songs a better version than the captain. the captain is alright, and im sure i'll enjoy it very much live, its gonna be one of those anthemy songs, but this version is just so more original and "biffy" tbh, the captain was very different to what i expected to here after such a strong track like the golden rule. the captains not bad, but hopefully its an anomaly.
What's a real biffy fan? Someone who's supported them for years maybe. Who's played gigs with them back when they still had day jobs? Who thinks they do better writing pop songs than directionless drivel like this track?
It's fine though, elitist snobs like you make things interesting :)
Clearly enough of a fan to appreciate a song for what it is as opposed to clinging on to any "biffier than thou" bragging rights. Get over yourselves peoples. The captain is clearly how the band had intended it to be, and not like this lazily strung together 3 piece rendition through a live p.a.
As much as I strongly disagree with the comment below you, i hate this "real Biffy fan" shit. Fair enough, i agree this version is a hell of a lot better than "The Captain". Theyve changed their sound blah blah blah, all that crap that everyone's heard before. Tough, get over it and go listen to their old stuff.
Fuck you Im not being elitist, Just stating that to describe a Biffy Clyro song as wilfully awkward does somewhat beg the question... so why the fuck are you listening to Biffy Clyro?... Peace out real Biffy fans... Haha sorry that last bit was a joke, couldnt help myself...
Corporate fatcat: Add a symphony orchestra; mix the heavily distorted guitars so far out of the song that they're effectively inaudible on the radio; and finally add some emetic, derivative lyrics...then i'll let you put it on the album.
haha, all these tracks are so fuckin good!, i go this, being gabriel, scissor kick, asexual meat kitchen all the way down chapter 2, drown in a natural light, intructio4
Was wonderin were i heard that line before! Thats one of there best b-sides. I didnt think it was live either until the cheering at the end of the track! Best live band ever, in fact best band ever!!

primarkopolop 2 years ago 4
whatever people say, this songs a better version than the captain. the captain is alright, and im sure i'll enjoy it very much live, its gonna be one of those anthemy songs, but this version is just so more original and "biffy" tbh, the captain was very different to what i expected to here after such a strong track like the golden rule. the captains not bad, but hopefully its an anomaly.

What's a real biffy fan? Someone who's supported them for years maybe. Who's played gigs with them back when they still had day jobs? Who thinks they do better writing pop songs than directionless drivel like this track?
It's fine though, elitist snobs like you make things interesting :)

this is farrrrr better than the album version

How anyone can prefer this wilfully awkward, unfinished cacophany to 'the captain' is beyond me

Your clearly not a real Biffy fan...
ler0y182 2 years ago

I've liked them since 2001. Do i get to join the "i'm a real biffy fan" club? Kids today!

oh okay then, i suppose he'll take heed of your wise words and go listen to another band and never again do you the injustice of voicing his opinion?
do us all a favour and keep your elitist bullshit to yourself
tiddelyjazz 2 years ago
Fuck you Im not being elitist, Just stating that to describe a Biffy Clyro song as wilfully awkward does somewhat beg the question... so why the fuck are you listening to Biffy Clyro?... Peace out real Biffy fans... Haha sorry that last bit was a joke, couldnt help myself...

ah bollocks, I keep trying to have a go at people but my posts dont get put under the right comments! haha

Conceptual duologue:
Simon Neil: I've got a really good song here!
Corporate fatcat: Add a symphony orchestra; mix the heavily distorted guitars so far out of the song that they're effectively inaudible on the radio; and finally add some emetic, derivative lyrics...then i'll let you put it on the album.

It's fucking embarassing trying to listen to this.
Biffy are good now, they used to be fucking criminal. Thank fuck they managed to keep paying off there egg cards till they got good.

Are you only keen on radio friendly 'tunes' then?
This version is far and away better, not that the new ones bad, its basically this watered down.
