I actually talked it over with a friend and we agreed that Ronald McDonald is essentially capable of showing up anywhere, adapting to the situation, and then seeming as if he was always there.

He fits perfectly into the role of villain as seen here, in Touhou, in your nightmares, and as the destroyer of worlds. This is also pretty much proof-positive why fear of clowns is incredibly common amongst the world's population.
