SONG IS ABOUT THE DEVASTATION OF WARS AND HOW LIES, GREED, MANUFACTURED HATE & MANUFACTURED FEAR STARTS WARS. ALL WARS CARRIED OUT BY BLIND PATRIOTISM HAS DEADLY LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES.
This song was stuck in my head back in 1990 when I was in basic training!Even though it is about Vietnam the theme of imposing American Ideals and using immoral tactics in the millitary is somthing that I witnessed in Bosnia is Timeless!!!
I will remember REM for their MTV video's in Evrybody Hurts and Losing My Religion. I understand that this song was supposed to be against Monsanto when they were a defense contractor in the Vietnam War and Agent Orange was used against civilians.
Certainly the best band from States for the last 30 years: Radio free europe opened my head when I was a young boy. Wow what was that... Greetings from Portugal.

@VivaLaFlaem Your English is a lot better than the few words of German I know I can speak a little Spanish just from growing up on the streets of NY more than taking Spanish in school This was always R.E.M. favorite greetings from NY long the crossroads of the world and now greater metro NY has a popualtion of 22.5 million
When I first heard this nearly 7 years ago, my mom who was IN the military told me that they sprayed orange soda to kill plants reduce hiding spots for enemy forces.
Not soda. It is a defoliant, also used in the US in the past. Our leftovers were generously donated to VN, Cambodia, oh, pick a spot. Bother to go to a site--maybe even a VA site, and see what it does, not just to those in VN, but to US citizens and soldiers exposed. Then remember that we're still at war, only Gulf War Syndrome doesn.t exist either.
i think war is purely bullshit... i respect those who did fight for our freedom but really if u look at every war its jsut cuz the human race is dumb and greedy.
@TytusTolshemLives if u look at human histroy its all the same.. and if we could just be fine with what we got or get along war wouldnt be needed..and what good has war ever done?
@FlyBoyzScore Many thanks for deciphering the full lyrics for this. I'd wondered for ages what Stipe said between 2:10 - 2:43! Were they memories of a Vietnam veteran? He does it in his finest Southern accent too. (You seem to be a native of Philly. Cool city, South St. is ace.)
@greenorange75 I think it sort of is. obviously the main thrust of it is about Agent Orange though. I remember reading somewhere ages ago that the troops in 'Nam consumed Orange Crush by the bucketfull as it was the only canned drink you could get out there. I'm not sure how accurate that is though. I don't know any guys who served out there to confirm it either!
@coyote7272 I'm just going to assume that you have a pretty easy job. By that I mean you don't risk your life every single day in order for douchebags like you to accuse you of terrorism. I despise people like you, because you have no idea what you're talking about. You're lucky people like my brother serve our country just so it can be a place where people like you can just trash them. Go starve in a ditch, you fucking prick.
@oshaun6 someone needs some more Ambien...or had too much already, and got the insurance cancelled recently? i hear that happens >.>
killing for a living doesn't give you the right to take out your anger and aggression on the very people you claim to kill for. or has everyone become The Enemy in your eyes? think about it.
i realize your training makes it hard to distinguish real people from paper targets, but please try. we're living in a society here, and it's already violent enough =P
I say fuck our soldiers, not all of them, but I see things like millions of chicks that are basically single cuz they got guys overseas that were sweet to them right before leaving and asked them out, just to get some action when they got back, I've seen over a million civilian casualties making me think we're the terrorists, I've seen ignorant civilians here in america believe every word the government tells us, I've seen the womanizing roughneck scumbags they let into the military, I was there
@coyote7272 not fuck the soliders themselves fuck the military and war but otherwise spot on fella spot on and we are the teorrists have been since the revolutionary war when you think about it
I would love to go to that museum. i'm sure you've seen it, but the movie Platoon is a probably a decent representation of some of the crap that went down over there. rape, killing innocent civilians, burning villages, etc. it probably doesn't even scratch the surface though. it's a little harder to cover up these days because of surveillance and other technology out there. it still happens though. guantanamo, abu graib. cheers!
Ok rem, here you go, here's a world stage too say what ever you want too about anything you want too, OHH the vietnam war? GREAT IDEA, sing away boys - - WTF . . damit guys, who passed out the lsd/peyote/goofballs before you wrote/sang this derranged broken rambling half concept that says basically nothing? Damit guys grow some balls and have an opinion or at least make a complete sentence/concept.
herbicide is a poison that kills crops. helicopters would spray this in the rice paddies of the peasants to stop supplying food to NVA troops and to demoralize the north. but because it has harmful chemicals and stuff and it was in the rice(heavily eaten in everywhere) it caused birth defects in a good portion of the population of north vietnam. it has since been banned from use in the us
good song, In case you ppl dont know yet, this song is about a herbicide called "agent orange" used in vietnam by american troops. just in case any dumb - fucks werent watching the fucking video.
@theheadshot45 Dude I think "I'VE GOT MY SPIN, I'VE GOT MY ORRAANNNGEE CRUSH" is advertising for an orange drink.I don't know what a "herbicide" is.All my friends thought the same.my opinion not yours.=.=
Seriously? Why does it say we are agents of the free then? R.E.M. have even said in interviews that the song is about the vietnam war. It even informs you at the start of this video! " serve your conscience over seas" from america to vietnam?
Oh, and a herbicide is a toxic gas kind of thing that destroys plants. Agent orange is probably the most powerful.
@BlueSoda79 Everyone has the right to their own opinion However his intentions WERE to protest the Vietnam war and agent orange. Look it up if you don't believe it. It was devastating and they tried to cover it up.Many of our own people had problems because of it and because of the denial They weren't being helped. Look it up
how could you not know that. I mean thank you for informing the ignorant, but it strikes me as impossible to love this song unless you get the meaning. They were a pretty political band, yk...
@Alucard9318 There is actually 2 reasons that i found, one is about Agent Orange, and the other is that were sending young Americans over to fight without a good reason.
On memorial day let me say that that was a fucked up war. Our soldiers were shackled by politicians and the unpopularity of the conflict back home. They were spit on when they came home because they answered the call of duty. My uncle was a grunt in that war and to this day he will not talk about it. The vietcong knew they had us by the balls and they took advantage of it. Sad state of affairs. Fuck those who treated our soldiers badly!
@avzeolla I Agree, the reason is that many Americans did not know the reason that why they are in vietnam anyways, their goal was to follow commands only.
@avzeolla As an Englishman, and neutral on the subject, the popular opinion of that war was that America should never have been there in the first place. Your soldiers were victims and abusers in equal mesure for every spat on G.I. there was a Veitnamese child with Napalm burns (or worse) the true criminals were the American gov' and Military command. Shame as a nation you don't have the will to try the administration for war crime
@Dementat very good point. i agree it was an atrocity for all involved. we never should have been there in the first place. my point was directed to the american people who blamed and ridiculed the soldiers who, like my father and uncles, were drafted and went over there unwillingly. in no way do i overlook the war crimes committed against innocent civilians. your point is well made and well taken.
And also fuck those who committed the numerous war crimes when they were out there. I realise that most of the soldiers were conscripted there, and most behaved themselves. But I'd like to know why the US government failed to prosecute those responsible even though they had all the evidence.
@dimflamingo like i said, it was messed up... incidentally a couple days ago an american soldier was just sentenced to life for killing an afghani civilian.
I wasn't having a go at you; just expanding the point.
I've just been to the War Crimes Museum in Saigon and some of the stuff there is sickening.
As for the point I was making, some of the people involved in the My Lai massacre were never sentenced despite evidence and testimonies. I think that was an attempt by the govt to cover it all up and to carry on giving the illusion that the US were the "good guys" in that war.
@avzeolla I saw this funeral home with a sign in the front that said,"We would rather do business with 1,000 muslim terrorists then 1 American soldier." It was awesome!
@avzeolla hey now, Im viet, and if those brave men didnt go in there and do sumthing then a whole lot more of us wouldnt be here today. My grandpa was a southern vietnamese soldier who fought along side american soldiers, after the war, they would round up as many southern soldiers as they can and incarcerate them in "re-education camps" the next best thing to a nazi death camp.
The first time I heard this I thought it was about the soda...

HellsKat123456789 7 months ago
@BlueSoda79 No, it's about a herbicide...
theheadshot45 6 months ago
@theheadshot45 Dude I think "I'VE GOT MY SPIN, I'VE GOT MY ORRAANNNGEE CRUSH" is advertising for an orange drink.I don't know what a "herbicide" is.All my friends thought the same.my opinion not yours.=.=
BlueSoda79 6 months ago
@BlueSoda79 *spine.

Look it up
onejavalady 6 months ago
how could you not know that. I mean thank you for informing the ignorant, but it strikes me as impossible to love this song unless you get the meaning. They were a pretty political band, yk...

From "In Time 1988-2003, The Best Of R.E.M":
"I must have played this song onstage over three hundred times, and i still don't know what the fuck it's about".

Fuck those who treated our soldiers badly!
avzeolla 8 months ago 46
@avzeolla I Agree, the reason is that many Americans did not know the reason that why they are in vietnam anyways, their goal was to follow commands only.
TheEvilcarus 7 months ago
@avzeolla thank you!
pianissimo5 6 months ago
@avzeolla As an Englishman, and neutral on the subject, the popular opinion of that war was that America should never have been there in the first place. Your soldiers were victims and abusers in equal mesure for every spat on G.I. there was a Veitnamese child with Napalm burns (or worse) the true criminals were the American gov' and Military command. Shame as a nation you don't have the will to try the administration for war crime
Dementat 6 months ago
@Dementat very good point. i agree it was an atrocity for all involved. we never should have been there in the first place. my point was directed to the american people who blamed and ridiculed the soldiers who, like my father and uncles, were drafted and went over there unwillingly. in no way do i overlook the war crimes committed against innocent civilians. your point is well made and well taken.
avzeolla 6 months ago
@avzeolla
And also fuck those who committed the numerous war crimes when they were out there. I realise that most of the soldiers were conscripted there, and most behaved themselves. But I'd like to know why the US government failed to prosecute those responsible even though they had all the evidence.
dimflamingo 6 months ago
@dimflamingo like i said, it was messed up... incidentally a couple days ago an american soldier was just sentenced to life for killing an afghani civilian.
avzeolla 6 months ago
@avzeolla

XXXthingthingxxX 5 months ago
@avzeolla hey now, Im viet, and if those brave men didnt go in there and do sumthing then a whole lot more of us wouldnt be here today. My grandpa was a southern vietnamese soldier who fought along side american soldiers, after the war, they would round up as many southern soldiers as they can and incarcerate them in "re-education camps" the next best thing to a nazi death camp.
AsianDudeX01 5 months ago
@avzeolla the higher the rank the longer the person is to be imprisoned. my gandpa was a colonel... a pretty high rank. each
