In this it sounds like the dude converted the VGM to MIDI & replaced the instruments with square lead samples...

These sort of videos are misleading. Sure, it sounds like an 8-bit song, but the NES' sound chip could only support four music channels: two squares, one triangle, and one noise. This has too many channels, and should be called "8-bit style".

welll.....if you were trying to make it sound like NES music, it doesn't, because it has too many sounds playing at once. NES only had a triangle wave, two square waves, and a noise source, along with a sample source.

sonic 2, one of my all time favorite video games. I still remember the day this game came out back in '92. To this day, Chemical Plant is still my fav sonic stage. the music may have something to do with that.

He just used a midi implementation program, so there's not really much he can do.

You can only remove sound channels, turn up volume on said channel, and change your instruments from square to rectangle, to saw or whatever.
