I love her keyboard skills not to mention her guitar and voice! I am very lucky I came across her beautiful music. Her version of "Let No Man Steal Your Thyme" is wonderful as well. Pentangle does a nice job of it to =)
Shelagh McDonald's version is so much better than the original. She manages to draw out all the subleties in the lyrics in a way Keith Christmas, ironically, does not. She shows fantastic maturity for a 21 or 22 year old. Beautiful song.
Well, hang on there fella, Shelagh is brilliant but Keith Xmas is something else. He wrote this fucker after all, and his version - in my opinion - stands up to scrutiny. Be fair...
@sparklefrost I just think, having to listened to both versions, that Keith Christmas's is paced too quickly to allow the implications of the lyrics to sink in. It's a good song, he certainly deserves credit for writing it. I prefer Shelagh McDonald's interpretation - YMMV. But KC wouldn't be the first songwriter to be trumped by a better interpretation: think Hendrix's version of Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" for example.
A beautiful version of the Keith Christmas original. Both Keith and Shelagh were on the B&C label 1969-1971 and she sang a couple of his on her first album (this being one) and also lent her backing vocals to Keith's lovely 'Fawn'. These fabulous artists need to be out there!
