  • I disagree with the "true fans" of anime who demand the subtitles. If you're trying to keep up with the subtitles, then you don't get to absorb the lovely animation as much. Also different cultures share different amount of emotions. If you're an american and you watch a subtitled Chinese movie, you might think that some people are angry by how they express in american terms, but they're not, etc...

  • @Ingretto

For one thing, if you have to "keep up" with the subtitles, you are a little slow.

2nd the authentic emotion in the voices is very VERY important. Dub actors just cannot do it, not even a little, and if you can't see that then you are either too young or too new to anime.

I bet you watch your anime online. It hurts because I'm right.

  • can anyone help me? i finished watching ds already but i wanna have a dvd of ds.. do can anyone tell me where can i buy it? i live at Seattle.. and ders so many anime movies dat i wanna buy too! >.< thank you!

WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!??? GOD DAMIT YOUTUBE!!!

  • I don't know why but this trailer makes me cry :..(

But the ending could have used 2 frickin' minutes of happy aftermath. It left much to be desired. Most likely why netflix gave it 21/2 stars.

  • My favorite anime movie.

  • Wow after seing this trailer i have to get this NOW!

  • This was the best movie I have seen so far. A masterpiece at it`s highest definition...

  • the soundtrack for this movie is so incredibly good.

  • this movie is so damn good!

don´t understand who said "don´t like"!

  • I want to see this movie but how sad is it on a scale of 1 to 10? i mean i dont mind tradgedies, i loved grave of the fireflies, but if let's say everybody dies in the end then I'd rather know now so that I'm prepared. dont really mind spoilers btw

  • @ive1always1loved1you It's sad, and it makes you emotional, but it's very very good.

  • i saw this movie once and i thought i'd wasted my time.

then i saw it again and i realised that i missed so much the first time.

Makoto Shinkai has an almost perfect rythem in this film, the slowness and the poetic monologues. It finds the beauty in loneliness and silence.

  • Truely a movie that is a must see. plot I give it a 4.5 because of its parshly originality. Art was amazing, the work din't seem like a featured film, but an art gallerie. I'de rather haved watched this subbed rather than dubbed because of the voice actors, not saying they weren't good but because the original just captures the true emotion of what the situation is giving towards the audiance. Only thing I would say bad about the film is that its slow pace

  • This trailer made me emo. I need to see this lmfao. Hey should i watch it in Sub or dub?

  • ok i cried because it is such a good movie

  • I love this trailer.

  • this movie is better than some hayao myjasaki movies. and that means a lot ^^

  • The only Makoto Shinkai film i've seen is "Voices of a Distant Star", it was short, simple, and well-put-together. The message was also well-thought-out.

  • THIS TRAILER WAS AMAZING. But, do NOT watch it dubbed. The emotional impact of the subbed version is much more heart wrenching.

  • i love hilary hagg in this flim.

  • ahh, must see the movie right now!! ^^ it´s seems sooooooo romantic and sad......!

  • One of the best movies I've ever seen. It makes me feel more emotion than almost any other story I can think of. A complete nostalgia trip.

  • I tried to buy this off of amazon and it went out of print for a while. I may never get in : |

  • @Tubarulz64

Did you try look for the double box that comes with Voice of a Distant Star? Got it last Christmas, should still be available.

  • I love both 5 centimeters per second and this movie. But hands down, The Place Promised in Our early days is just soooo amazing. BTW, anyone know the song that starts playing at 1:01 ?

  • Wow o-o This looks kinda sad yet somehow touching for the trailer, maybe I'll watch the movie x3

  • one character looks like toohla from origin spirits of the past

  • ok where can i buy this in english everywhere i look, its all japanese

  • AFAIK, every region 1 DVD available for this movie has both a Japanese language track with English subtitles, AND an English language dub track. So as long as you buy the region 1 DVD, you'll be able to watch it in English.

  • Whow, lol. I don't recognize these voices. Were there two dubs then?

  • I like this more than 5cm per second.I hope someone feel it same way.

  • Ya I'm the same. It's just more open, you can dive into it more rather then just watch it like 5 cent.

It's such a sweeter story anyway, Place Promised.

  • ah it made me cry T-T

    Totally buying this

  • i watched the movie all ready it was amazing!

  • umm... I think I have to see that now. like right now.

  • This movie is great but watching in english dub really kills the joy for me. All animes should be watched in the original dub with english subtitles.

  • i actually think this one is good in english. but 5 cm per second and voices are WAY better in jap.

  • lol yeah this one was ok i think, but 5 cm ADV really dropped the ball

  • Comment removed

  • breathtaking

  • i remember this movie, i watched it like 8 years ago

  • Makoto Shinkai is great. I love him and Satoshi Kon. I even loved Voices of a Distant Star, 25 mins, really great, it was made only on a laptop

  • oh this looks good =D i wanna see this i hope its just as good as 5 centmiters per second

  • wow thanks.

    is there any bad parts?

like is it a movie for the family 2 watch?

  • lol! dont worry!

  • no "bad parts" really if you mean profanity. yes the whole family can definentily watch it, very beautiful.

it's not really a "family film" though if you know what i mean.

  • okay thanks!

    gotchya! ^_^

  • i recommend this movie to nearly anyone who appericates beautiful art, music and story. this movie is literally one of my favorites and is so unbelievably touching. please go watch it. it is totally worth it.

  • wats this movie about? is it good? wat is the rating? should i buy it?

  • basically this movie is about 3 friends who dream of seeing a tower in the distance. but one of the friends dissapear and the other 2 are in a state of depression in their lives in which they hope to save her from her endless dream.

i would give it an 8 or 9. yes buy it if you can it's fantastic, especially since it's from makoto shinkai.

  • Just watched this movie with my sister, and I have to say it's one of the most touching movies I've watched in a while. The movie packs so much charm and beauty. It really had me in tears towards the end.

  • Can you buy the japanese version in America? I watched both but the American version sounds goofy to me. Probably because i can speak japanese haha.

  • just got done watching this movie and all i going to say is, its money well spent.

  • This ´Movie is so sad......: ich habe den Film schon gesehn und kann ihn nur weiter empfehlen

  • that movie was awesome XD

  • This Movie was So amazing :]

  • i love this movie so much i have it on DVD ! ^^

  • Every time I watch this film, I come to adore it more and more, and each time, it's a different scene that gets me. I hope we see much more from Shinkai Makoto-san in years to come.

  • Man this makoto movie looks like i might enjoy it, i hope its better than 5 centimeters per second, i didnt really like that one much at all, although everyone else did.

  • Dude....im still crying!!and cursing at the same time....I would have liked an happy ending and ya the train sucked...>.>''

Anyway any1 kno where can i find sumthing other than the trailor of this one?X.X...im lost...

  • This trailer makes me think of the movie Pearl Harbor. Is The Place Promised in Our Early Days anything like that?

  • no. it's better!

  • Well, it's a little hard to explain. The time of the movie is in the 90's of Japan, but it's during a diffrent time span. Even though the movie takes place during the 90's, it has hints that Japan is still at war with the U.S., like in WWII. It's an excelent movie. The artwork is amazing, the music is supurb, and the voice actors for english aren't half bad.

  • So it's like an alternate universe?

  • Sorta, not quite. You'd really have to watch the movie.

  • It does take place in an alternate universe, and Japan is not still at war with the U.S., Northern Japan is occupied by the Soviets, while Southern Japan was occupied by the U.S., but the U.S.'s presence has diminished. The two halves are isolated from each other, and the kids want to journey to the other side. That's all I'm saying so I don't spoil to much.

  • i love this movie so much!

  • I havn't actually gotten to see the movie yet but I really want too. The music is beautiful and so is the plot. I can't wait to watch it.

  • I happen to LOVE Jessica Boone's role as Sayuri on this movie. It gives me eargasms.

The dub for this movie is quite well done. I dind't see any loss in beauty.

  • I know I know, I recently watched this again, I love the dubb better, altho I can understand japanese, and speak it. I still come back to dubb. ^^

  • This was movie was beautiful. I was left silent and teary-eyed at the end.

  • I hate English dubs on Shinkai's films. Such a shame to take away the beauty of the original.

  • wait can u help me i just saw this trailer and another one in japanese i think posted by aoihotomi and they were completely different did the english version change the scenes not just the laguage im soo confused are there two different versions of the same film?!?!?!?! ahhh im cofused!!!!!! plz help me

  • I have to say the dubbing either didn't translate properly - It was kind of laughable at times. It's not that the voices were bad, it just that they couldn't sell it and the lost in translation factor may have been the cause. the Japanese version, I just can't take the constant whining voice of the girl though.

  • Correct. Most of the script is lost in transaction of the dubbing. No matter what you prefer, the original is always the best as it is what the director wanted himself.

  • Absolutely agree. I always watch the subtitled version - especially in regular movies especially because even though you can't understand the words, the intonations and emotion in the voice is more authentic. In anime, I find the translated subtitles usually fill in the story a lot more than the straight dubbing. Depends I guess... How great is this director though?! I want to see even more of his work. Everyone should really see this movie on DVD if possible - otherwise enjoy.

  • I highly reccomend you to find and watch all of Shinkai's works. In each and everyone single one of them, I find beauty of his art and directing. He has got to be the best artist I know of despite all other famous artists because it feels as though his work is made especially for me. And I am not being selfish, I am serious. His art is so amazing and beautiful, I usually lose myself transfixed with a sense of longing... for something.

You will not be disappointed in his other animations.

  • That nice he has that effect on you. You can feel the sense of longing in his heart somewhere for another time, a lost time and place... it's sad and beautiful. I have seen a few of his other works - Voices of a Distant Star and 5 mil per second(correct title?) Feel free to swing by my page and suggest anything else by him and also anyone else you think is great in this genre as well.

    Thanks!

  • @caitlin276 d'uh

  • @caitlin276 'nuff said - thanks!

  • I can see why they do call him the next Miyazaki. Shinkai's films have a different tone to them at times, they do have a certain poetic nature as well; so to me his films are every bit as powerful as any Miyazaki film.

Despite their differences, Shinkai's magic is similar in one aspect at least, they are both excellent story tellers who capture the imagination and hold it captive for beautiful stories that can be watched countless times over with each viewing holding new magic and wonder.

  • His films seem more like movies and I feel they should be recognized on that level.

  • I can;t stand that voice actor. Having to read the subs takes away from the experience of the great artwork... Great film, but the dubbing was done in poor taste.

  • I have to agree wholeheartedly with you on that one. I'm not sure why the actors can't just talk normally instead of going OTT in pretty much every anime.

  • um...what? Sorry guys, but I have to disagree. I don't think anything was over the top in the english version...If anything, I thought the voice actors were a little too calm at some points! Maybe I heard a fan dub or something? Anyhow, I thought it was an amazig movie.

  • I think the scene where we first see the plane they're building is a good example of voice acting that made me cringe compared to the natural tone of voice used by the Japanese voice actor.

  • I bought both in a bundle pack, I like this one better, especially the story. Voices of a Distant star is too short, but Still Great.

They call this guy the nest 'Hayao Miyazaki'

Possibly its true, but not for awhile in my opinion

  • Shinkai's films affect me more than Miyazaki's do, which I think are awesome but not as beautiful.

  • Ive seen Miyazaki's work first, so thats what pretty much got me into this kinda stuff

  • Yeah, he got me into anime too, but it was this very trailer that got me into Shinkai, believe it or not, that's why I wanted to upload it for others.

  • This is what it feels like to me. Shinkai is more down to earth. His fantasy films, even, are not quit as imaginative (bad thing) but are thus more believeable and easier to connect to. Not to mention the fact that Shinkai has a thing for Tragedies which are naturally more poetic than, say, a hapy go lucky ending such as Howls Moving Castle. All in all, they are both amazing directors/writers/animators.

  • I think that sometimes happy endings work well, but I agree that often they feel a bit too contrived. Actually I think that Shinkai's films usually end on a happy note, even if it's not immediately obvious.

But I have to agree, they are both absolutely amazing, definitely my favourite filmmakers ever.

  • i have brought the movie. it looks great. what is the piece of music playing in the background?

  • The bit at the start if from either Sayuri's Melody or Sayuri's World (they both start the same). If anyone wants sheet music for either of them, PM me your email.

  • thanks. i have the music. i love this film and its music. but i have not seen Voices of a Distant Star. is it good?

  • I think it's better than this. The art is a little rough, but then Shinkai did it all himself. The music isn't as good, but I think the whole film is more touching, and the ending is more ambiguous.

  • ok thanks.

  • It is a piece by TENMON who does all the music for Shinkai's film. You can purchase it with the soundtrack.

  • thanks. Shinkai is doing another film called 5 Centimeteres per second. they have an English version to it as well.

  • halt die klappe nichts!!!!!!!

  • there are ONLY a few anime trailer that is good as this and to me there IS only ONE other director that is good as this guy and he is Hayao Miyazaki

  • It looks awesome.

  • that was great. i want to watch it now!
