The horse should be comfortable and calm enough with the situation that you don't need to calm him much when you get on him first - he should trust you enough NOT to spook in the first place.
@Jigsaw1314 No actually he makes sense. There will ALWAYS be new stuff that spooks your horse,so trying to make him spook proof is a waste of time. Much more sensible to teach him a signal that says " no need to spook-Its OK" which you can use whenever a new situation arises.
@nags2bitches um thats not a waste of time to make your horse spook proof, you should always desentitize your horse to anything, old or new, if its new still desentitize him her to it. its not waste of time its a good thing to do if you come across it again and he wouldnt be scared of anything if you desentitize the horse to everything and you wont have a problem, go watch clinton anderson do it.
@nags2bitches but its not a waste of time when your introducing saddle and everything, i just desentized my filly yestersay from saddle for first time and she stopped after while and letted me get on her after i got down with everything on ground, its still good to desentize your horse, my filly is scared of anything of saddle now and me being on her does not affect her, she is actually lazy at the moment. but wutever same thing, would do both.
@HorzeLover101 I think your heart is in the right place you are just misunderstanding. The guy is just saying, your horse is terrified of EVERYTHING and that is natural for a horse and she will never learn to be unafraid when faced with new things but if you train her right, she will learn to be afraid but BRAVE so long as you are with her. Does that make sense?
