i was just there today, i saw LIKE 99 jellyfish, one sting ray about as big as you can streach your arms and a little further, some unknow think i couldent figure out what it was it was grey and black on the top and had a white belly. it kept swimming to the surface and making bubbles.
Thats freaking big! If i was that dude on the kayak i would be freaking out! . When i went on the peer all i saw was a little shark like 3 feet big! and a sting ray and dolphin!
If I was the guy in the conoe and heard all the little kids screaming "Watch out!" I would pretend to fall in the water somewhat close to the shark and start screaming.
yes OKN03 but there are also great dive stories and videos on the net.. try the myscubastory site. Type myscubastory into google and its the first one. They have lots of vids pics and true dive stories accidents etc
If I were that kayaker, I'd be shitting bricks, because he/she probably couldn't tell what kinda shark it was and just saw this big dark shark-shaped object. Crikey!
i have been out in the water with them before. they mean no harm. the only times they could harm you is by accidentaly bumping into you or scratching itself up against your boat. they can tip them by accident that way. but i have been out in canoos with them b4 and they do no harm
Hmm I have the game Endless Ocean 2 for the Wii, and there's a basking shark too.
I know from the game they don't have teeth, but they have a huge mouth they can open and close to fill with fish. I also know the basking shark is biggest seacreature, under the whale shark. They don't eat/attack people tho
@KonataStar00 They can eat humans, but never on purpose or b/c they look at them as a threat, just from sucking in shrimp & other foods they could swallow a human
@KonataStar00 The basking shark is the second best shark species, under the whale shark. The whale shark is the biggest fish in the ocean, but the largest sea creature is actually the blue whale, which is also the biggest mammal and possibly the largest animal to ever life on this planet (according to the American Cetacean Society’s webpage “Blue Whale”).
shlokda - you must have some bag luck , if you think PCB water looks like garbage! I think it looks great almost year round. not like the keys clear but still really nice most of the time.
@capnlinda I guess so. how far off the beach is this? Whenever I'm down at PC, its filled with kelp and seaweeed, cluttiner up the water and making it look dark. I've done scuba diving in the keys and its crystal clear most all the time.
@shlokda this is right off the beach, sometimes our beaches will look like that but it usually goes away quickly and most of the year the water is emerald green and the water is beautiful...
I konw the shark was only after the plankton and had no desire to harm the kayaker but I would still be having a complete heart attack if that thing started swimming towards me. It's bloody huge!
How the hell is PC that clear water? The ocean always looks like garbage in PC on the beach. Typically have to go down farther south to the Keys or Ft Lauderdale to get that kind of water
It may not be deliberately aggressive, but if something that big hit you with its tail, even accidentally, I bet it would cause some pretty serious injury.
@Arbeedubya Hi. This fish is a little fella, they grow half as big again as that one, however if you caught the full brunt of that fish's tailslap it would shatter half the bones in your body.
when i was in the navy as a diver i saw one underwater. when it opened its mouth to feed i almost pooped myself. even though i knew it was harmless it sure was intimidating.
Edrath----- if I was out there and there was a huge fish as cool as that I'd want them to shout it's location to me so I could see it too. Who said anything about it attacking??
Wished someone had turned around to the idiots shouting and said, "Oh STFU already! It's just a basking shark!" Sorry, but it annoys me when people who know nothing feel the need to make a scene. The shark's not the least interested in eating anyone. It's just feeding harmlessly.
I kayak there often and have never seen a basking shark, they aren't all that common anywhere never mind here. You are more likely to see hammerhead, tiger and bull sharks. So I still think from his perspective it would have been damn near impossible to tell what it was, nevermind risking it, but hey if you go kayaking alone in the ocean you aren't probably the brightest bulb to begin with!
People seriously, get a grip. It is harmless, and eats plankton. The last thing it is gonna do is a routine from Jaws. That kayaker was safer than he is when driving on any roads. Especially in Florida...
@devantej2011 That's not the middle of the ocean that is a pier and most people who kayak know enough about the ocean to recognize a gentle basking shark when they see one which is probably why he didn't panic and was brave enough to kayak there haha.
The kayak was a 14 foot kayak to put it in perspective. It scared the hell me and I knew what kind of shark it was and was on the pier. I can't believe that guy knew it was from the kayak before he jumped in with it.
Some of these comments are retarded. Yea it's a Basking shark but it's also 30+ feet long and lives with predators. It's not a puppy. Sure it's probably not gonna bite the guy but that's not to say you want to go swimming with it. Any "normal" person would be scared.
My parents and I used to vacation there when I was little, and Dad would never go in the water because he always said there were sharks. Mom and I used to make fun of him for it...and he just emailed me this. I feel bad now.
