LOVE that little "uh" at 1:04. It sounds like something an artist would do now in (soon to be) 2012. I get it though, cause the little beat drop at 1:00 was tight. Percussion was holding it down. Groove.
why everybody hate on lil wayne ... um fifty something years old. and a major al green fan from the jump ... lil wayne has his purpose. it's called evolution. let the music play. let lil wayne have his day and time. his music PROBLY won't stand times test, but maybe it will. obviously lots of people really dig lil wayne. i see his appeal at times, he is a unique performer and personality. musically, he aint my cat. but folks need to give lil wayne some space ... he doin what he do, TODAY!!!
@snakehunter1964 no harm in that - I remember the song too :) just such artists Al are timeless legends (as I'm sure you know) who have put in more work and dedication to their craft...kind of startling looking at Al's vids and seeing him mentioned
@1:40 check out Mr. Green's platform shoes. Those were sharp back in the day. Brother is smoother than oil. All love and spiritual songs. Where is his competitor in this generation?
@ Notice Al's band. This was his original band, and while they didn't get public recognition; It was them that gave Al his well known sound. The light complected bro with the big afro, the drummer, a female organist (church sound), and he had a Bungo drum player. They were heavily laden with talent. And they did make the difference in his sound. He later changed band members, and u can tell the difference. Not taking anything from Al's immaculate talent, though. Oh, and the horn section!
@marybethcold1 Yes thanks - gum chewing would be sexy wouldn't it? Mowing grass, yard work, doing the dishes, anything Al wanted to do, I would love, love to watch that fine specimen of masulinity do!!
A question I pose is that has the South produced a soul singer like this in the past 20 years - I would really like to know. If not, WHY NOT ... Guys like Al Green were coming out of the South for a good stretch ...
@GeneralTrousers Al Green comes out of GRAND RAPIDS MI. WHY? Cause just maybe we in the north have some great talent- NOT COLOR barriers. Who says good soul only flys in the south?
@pcmcmeans point being a lot of good, if you like, African- American, talent is recognized as coming from the north country verses the south. Al Green fits in everywhere. Perhaps just a little braggin rights, perhaps not, but talent is not limited to location. Motown gave us some of the best. I would expect you would agree on that, yes? The south held back a lot of great talent for a long time because of color barriers. Glad it is over and all can enjoy great music.
@woolly65 then fill in the blanks for me. how did he come to live and record in Grand Rapids for Fenton records?, which was later sold to Great Lakes Recording. the Debarge family is also from there and the Jackson Fve were from Gary Indiana, not far away, and tied to the Debarge family through Janet Jackson. i know i got a little off track but the reason was of course that it is possible that Al Green moved to Grand Rapids at a very early age while gaining his true following in Detroit.
While I agree that it takes talent and skill to run a sampler and mixer properly, there is a completely different skill to a group of people playing instruments and making music for an artist like Green to lend his instrument ... his voice ... to !!!
One of my favorite singers. what a great sound...perfect...that feel good music...

This song bring me tears im relatin to this song by experiences in my early life as a little girl....Soooo true listen how he says it's all in a days !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's a great video, pity the music isn't more in balance with the voice, it sounds a bit meager like this.
Due to copyrights the normal recorded audio version of this song can't be uploaded which is a shame for us the fans. Greedy people fighting over royalties nowadays can't be trusted anyway! Just give us the music and back off!
When I was 16 I heard his tune "Tired" on radio the first time and the special "disharmony" of the melody direct touched me, like nothing before, because before I heard only melodic Motown and Stax stuff. Than followed all the other hit's and I became a big fan of him. Now I'm 58 and I still collect his records and listen to them - is there something comparable of the crap they offer to us as "music"? My children listen and like it too, because it's soul music at it's best - art and heritage!
The time is approachin utubers! Yes 15days from now I will be sittin in front of this awesome man(if God permits) I've been lookin at my tickets 4 about 4months,and my wait is almost ova! I will keep you guys posted on the show,I know it would be nothin but like my man Al say (Simply-Beautiful) LOL!!!!
AL ,YOU ARE THE GREATEST!!!! QUESTION TO AL - WHAT IN THE WORLD DO YOU THINK OF ALL THESE POSTS ON YOU - I WISH THERE WAS SOME KIND OF WAY YOU COULD ANSWER MY QUESTION........AL YOUR MUSIC IS AWESOME.....REAL MUSIC SAYING REAL WORDS....REAL MELODIES..... IT TRANSENDS ALL PROBLEMS, WORRIES ETC, AS ONLY MUSIC CAN DO, BUT YOU PUT YOUR SPIN ON IT, AND IT GOES TO ANOTHER LEVEL GOSH YOU TRULY HAVE A GIFT FROM GOD, AND YOU HAVE USED IT VERY WELL!! LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I heard this song several times, and I read about the incident with his girlfriend and the grits....and hearing this song really makes me think this was pertaining to her...
he's not the last of his kind..i do have to say one of the greatest... there are def singers out there today that have a lot of potential.. they just need to take notes, maxwell, d'angelo, jaheim, tank, raheem devaughn, lyfe jennings, anthony hamilton... plenty of underrated artist out there
Read his autobiography a few years ago and he was definitely a player. But he was also very conflicted about singing secular music because his roots were in the church.
@mcpm4 I also read it too. I could not put that book down until it said THE END! LOL I am waitin on the next book to be released some time in the near future! I hope he write another book really though I enjoyed it! And yes I agree he was a playa, the part tripped me out is when he was messing around with the chick that he said taught him some thangs(which was a prostitute) if you remember that part in the book!
@bgw48 yes, I was kind of shocked by that, too. Oh well, guess everyone has a past. I love him as a singer, though. And if I was honest he probably could have gotten it if I was old enough back then. Now, I'm old enough to know better than to get involved with the players!
@mcpm4 Yes everyone do has something they are not proud of in their past! Are you far from my state I know you said you would love to see him perform? And yea I am 100% sure if I would have known him back then and I was of age, the rest would be history> All he would have had to done is sang to me a few lines of (What A Wonderful thing Love Is) and the clothes would have been everywhere, BUT ON!!!!!!! LOL
Seein this just makes you want to be there! Every time I see him anywhere makes me feel like if I just could have been near the stage, him, the room, his room LOL! Anywhere would have put a giant smile on my face. Oh Well was too young back then, but I 'm of age right now!!!LOL
My Mom would send this as a dedication song to my Father when he was stationed in Korea in the 70's. Man the memories are flooding back. Their version of a ringtone.
Wish Al would look up The Blue Shoe Project and see what we are up to since we hired him to play at Will Rogers Auditorium in 2005. He put on a great show.
See!? That's a living legend putting it down the right way!! The stage isn't crowded with dancers, hype people, etc. Brother Al is moving the crowd thru his most potent weapons....his voice and song. The artists of today don't have this power. They can sell records but I'll be damned if they can sing a song...
@Agent4Wisdom i mean at least r kelly ben tryna bring this type of music as far as so that u step 2 like steppin the name of love also that shows so many emotion n soul he need 2 lead 2days artist 2 dis type of music
@Agent4Wisdom i don't think anyone is stupid enough to presume anybody of today can get even a quarter of that SOUL down... and I don't mean soul music, I mean soul in the music.
What's funny about Al Green, is I've noticed even at the tender age of children 11and 12 years old he had an effect on them! I know because I am one of them. I too was only 12 years old when I became hooked, and I still am. A lot of the comments that I read are die hard fans that got into this man at an early age. Thatz mad love for him, to stick with him 30-40 years of your life!!! Love me some Al Green 4 LIFE...........
@faraboverubies31 Yes thatz me an true Al G Lover LOL! He will be here in my home town on July 31st, @ the Horseshoe Casino. I just hope I will not be in an institution by then from the wait!(LOL)
@mcpm4 Sure, mcpm I was so excited about him coming I forgot to state where my home town was. It's Gary Indiana. He was here in 2008 and I thought I would loose my mind! So here I go again waiting for July 31st to get here, hoping and praying my husband won't have me commited some where before that time comes LOL! I wish it was this month he would be here, it's going to seem like eternity, but I must be strong and keep my focus on the prize(My man AL) LOL!!!!!!
@bgw48 Yes, I have been in love with him since I was 11. I liked his first song, Back Up Train, but when he came out with Tired of Being Alone, I became an Al Green addict, and have been for the rest of my life!
I was ten years old listening to my aunt's Al Green records...I feel in love with him and the music. Thirty years later, the songs still warm my heart...
Never buy a greatest hits collection. Buy the actual albums. It's not like his stuff is out of print. Now Call Me is one of the best albums of the seventies. And all time.
omg!!!!!!,thank,ya,thank ya,thank ya,this is one of my all time favorite songs from al green, please put up anymore that you have of him& pleasedon't take it down, everytime i take a break from youtube i come back to find that either youtube have or the person who have posted the videos have taken them down, there are hardly any of al greens performances on youtube like there were before.,oh and did i mention to say thank you again:o))))
If you don't own "Al Green's Greatest Hits", go buy some gasoline and burn your collection. Al's Greatest hits is EASILY one of the top albums of the 1970's. EVERY song is killer!
This has to be new to youtube because I agree I've neva seen this either!! and I know I have seen everything on here that my man Al has performed.(LOL) Thanks for the post this is LONG over due!!!!
Al drummer was awesome ! The whole band was a joy backing him up.

@bgw48
I completely identify with your comment. I was about that age, too, and I'm still in love with Al. :-)

@bgw48 Yes, I am one of them. I heard "Call Me" at a birthday party when I was in the second grade, and I have been a fan of his since that time.

@bgw48 Yes, I have been in love with him since I was 11. I liked his first song, Back Up Train, but when he came out with Tired of Being Alone, I became an Al Green addict, and have been for the rest of my life!

This last verse here:
"If you find you're a long ways from home
And somebody's doing you wrong
Just call on me baby
And come back home"
Oh, my God - that verse blows my mind - every time!
Thanks for posting this FunkSoBrudda, you da best!

Never buy a greatest hits collection. Buy the actual albums. It's not like his stuff is out of print. Now Call Me is one of the best albums of the seventies. And all time.

If you don't own "Al Green's Greatest Hits", go buy some gasoline and burn your collection. Al's Greatest hits is EASILY one of the top albums of the 1970's. EVERY song is killer!
