I was listening to the radio at work that morning and when they came on and said that a plane had the tower I said something to the guy next to me about what an idiot that pilot must have been to not see the WTC. Then when the second plane hit and we started getting a better idea about what was going on I felt a little guilty for my previous statements.
Good video! Interesting reflection. I wonder why your profs didn't mention the events as they were unfolding. It was a strange day though. I was in London on vacation, knowing I had a long plane ride in my immediate future. I went to Paris the next day. Strange mood everywhere, not knowing what was coming next. Seems like you've captured the intervening years accurately too.
@zeek72358 Thank you! I think the profs were just too busy and didn't have a grip on what was going on. They probably didn't want to misinform people or stir up too much worry. That's the best reason I can think of. That must have been so interesting to see the reactions of people in other countries. You should document your experience, if you haven't already. I'm sure people would be interested to hear your perspective.
While We Have Memories Death Is NEVER Final! My thoughts & prayers are with ALL who's lives were so tragically taken that day & to those who were left to struggle to cope with the atrocity.67 British nationals were killed that day & I remember them among the almost 3000 souls who perished.R.I.P.
From what I learn there were actually 90 countries 'represented' in the almost 3000 victims.Yes,we'll always honour their memories even when it's not in such a public way!
@RegularRuss It makes me sad to think about how people your age never knew what it was like before 9/11. There was so much more optimism back then. After 9/11 it seemed like liberalism was suddenly dead. Social issues like gay rights were suddenly not important anymore. It was really depressing to see how easily fear and war crushed all the important social issues. If that hadn't happened, the 2000s would probably have been a time of progress, not stagnation.
@Jimplicit i know, ive always wondered how airports and places like that were before 9/11. but i mean i never even lived in america before 9/11 haha so the way i live now is the only way i have ever known to :/
@Jimplicit that must've been so scary when you did then! i know that when i had to come to america, i cried and cried and cried because we had to fly here, and i didnt want to because i thought terrorists would kill us too :[[ but i lived in manchester england :]
9-11 has changed the world completely. There have always been wars in the human history and there always will be but this has had a tremendous impact on us all. Far right politicians taking advantage of it, in the Netherlands as well not just the US government. Free Speech? I don't know. Free speech as long as it fits in the right wings agenda, if you know what I mean. I agree with elazarn2 : republicans will win the 2012 election and it won't help the us and the world at all.Good video !!
@TheNella1961 I shudder to think that republicans might run this country again. It's bad enough that they are crippling our current government, preventing any positive change from occurring. I wish the problem of crazy right wing politicians was only here in the US. I always think of Europe as being a far more enlightened place.
I think Europe might be more enlightened but things are changing here as well, sadly enough. More ( far) right wing corrupt politicians, bankrupted countries and more difficulties for gays as well. We all must be very alert on what is happening......
Sadly,Europe has lost much of it's 'enlightenment',certainly here in Britain. My condolences to all your fellow Americans who 'lost' a loved one on that tragic day!
Very interesting reflections. I'm glad you brought up what's happened socially and politically. All the other reflections I've seen and heard are about how fear-stricken people still are and how waving flags and killing people overseas will solve the problem.
Counterpoint: Has the pendulum really swung back? In my experience, free speech is only allowed now if it doesn't criticize Republicans (and/or if it does criticize "liberals.") I'm pessimistically hoping the 2012 election stops that.
@elazarn2 You're right. The pendulum has not truly swung all the way back, although I am glad to see it's swung back at least part of the way. I wish people would end the stranglehold the republicans have on our government, but I don't see it happening. People are disenchanted with Obama, and for that reason a lot of people are foolish enough to vote for a republican who will only make things worse.
That was interesting to hear about where you were during 9/11. I had stayed at a friends house the night before, and I had a hangover from hell, so I took a taxi home. The taxi driver had the radio on and that's when I had learned we had been attacked. Of course I was shocked, but was really weird is that it didn't really hit me until a few months later when I was looking at a book on 9/11, and just looking at that pics made me break down in tears. Anyways thanks for posting the vid Jim!
It was an incredible day and one we will never recover from. I would just hope that we regain clear headed thinking. I know - fairytales, right? Great job Jim. I recorded a response but it was so disjointed and no amount of re-recording or editing (a skill I do not have) would have straightened it up. So just know that your video impressed me and I'm pretty much on the same page regarding the damages done by our own leaders both to us here and to our reputation worldwide. .
@thizizliz Thanks so much, Liz :) I wish clear headed thinking wasn't a fairytale, but it often seems that it is. I'd still love to see your video response, editing or no editing.

@popazz1 I did not know about the British nationals. I am sure those 3000 would be glad to know that we are still honoring their memory.
