I love this so much! The dance routine is wonderfully done. Words almost prophetic. As a young teeny-bopper, Davy was my love, my heart-throb. I guess he always will be.
His star power just wasn't well known as it should have been. David Bowie changed his name because he didn't want to be confused with Davey. The producers of Star Trek at Desilu studios brought in Mr. Chekov to compete with the Davy in the ratings against the Monkees at the time. I'm so sad that Davy is no longer with us.
I absolutely love this sequence, and every time I watch the film I have to review it two or three times... It certainly shows just how good the combination of The Monkees + Bob Rafelson / Jack Nicholson was... if only they'd made that sequel!!!
One of my favorite scenes from "Head." The movie wasn't promoted nearly as much as it should've been. That was probably because the Monkees had pretty much run their course by then. It's actually an entertaining movie, that captures much of the kookiness of 1960s films. RIP, Davy.
Considering that the Toni Basil "Mikey" video hit in the US in 1982.....she would be much older than the other Pop-Music artists of the day..pretending to be a HS cheerleader even! Ok, she's about like Cindi Lauper, but that's a rare group! :p I had no idea that she was a choreographer in the late 60s. timeless talent.
Oh my poor poor Davy, the highlight of last summer whence I discovered you. Though I'd only known you a summer, you shall be missed by myself and all Monkees fans young, and old. RIP My lovely
This was always one of my favorite songs, and scenes, of everything DJ did. I love the flashing back & forth from black on white & white on black. Sadly, this does seem like a perfect sort of tribute to his death, now. He had class, a well-rounded entertainer, you just don't see that much anymore (if at all) these days. And he was always so shmexxy!!
R.I.P. Davy Jones, ride off into the horizon on your white horse
Can't you just picture him in that white suit strolling into the sunset on his way to Heaven (or whatever next pphase of existence you choose to believe in).... all to the tune of those horns?
I'm so glad a good transfer of this is posted! This was my favorite Monkees moment and I had a hankering to see it again with Jones' passing. Thanks for the memory!
I believe this performance caputures the essence of Davy Jones more than any other solo performance or solo vocal of his. Also eclipses any performances as part of the Monkees. See you on the other side, dear Davy....
PS -- Did anyone else have dreams of one day growing up and having a super cool apartment like The Monkees had?? Those rad stairs...that great space...overlooking the beach...with Mr. Schneider's sage wisdom being dispensed daily. I'd take a pass on Mr. Babbit as a landlord, though :o)
I was a 1970's latch-key kid who had a serious first crush on your sparkling wit and sweet face...you guys gave me a bit of much-needed peace for 30 minutes nearly every day after school in those early 70's reruns. Even though I began to dig deeper into punk rock as my tween years hit, I'd still pull out Headquarters and blast For Pete's Sake and quietly ponder Shades of Gray. Rest well, Davy x0x0x
My fav Davy Jones moment has gotta be this little dong and dance - and then he goes to get further wisdom from Mr Zappa himself !!!!! hope you both having a ball up there guys !!!!
Michael Nesmith was my Monkees crush, but even that dreamboat couldn't bust a move like Davy Jones. RIP, Dream Believer. May your legacy live on in the fancy footwork that Axl Rose stole from you!
That is a tremendous video. 1968?! Think of the hours of manual editing needed...without computers! Toni Basil?!?!?! Back then...I though she was much younger when "Mickey" hit the charts!
@Mach5Motorsport She would only have been 25 when this was made. Just two years older than Davy. And 1981 was a long time ago. So she was not so old (:
@Mach5Motorsport Curiously enough "Micky" was about a crush Toni Basil had on Micky Dolenz while working on this film. She was only a couple years older than them in 1968.
Had it been Davy, she may not have had such a big hit in 1981 (:
@bluechao: She was also in Village of the Giants. That was the first movie I saw that alerted me to the fact that she was a choreographer and actress back in the '60s.
@ts1depot Never saw that one. The two I mentioned because they were very major movies in their time, Easy Rider especially, which is still a major cultural landmark.
This segment from the film "Head" is just perfect--very good and crystal clear audio (although not the enhanced stereo of another version uploaded on You Tube), and the absolute best video of the segment on You Tube.
My only suggestion, if you care to have another crack at it, is to sync up the audio with enhanced stereo, and to leave intact the scene following the Davy Jones song & dance number, wherein rock legend Frank Zappa talks with Jones.
RIP Song & Dance Man. Love ya Davy!!!!!

This song was written by the super-talented Harry Nilsson. It's about his own family.

@U2platters I agree! If I didn't know better, I would think the filmakers and Jones made this to be the perfect tribute intentionally.
